How can you view the FPS?

Stupid question here: How do you watch the FPS you get?
When I turn on the dev. apps and open the applet, the highest value which is labelled 'F' never goes higher than 60. I understand that these are the real FPS that my monitor gets, because its refresh rate is 60 Hz.
Which value do you control when you say you have 170 FPS for example?

unchek "vertical sync" in video options ... and be sure vertical sync is off in your graphic card software
Vertical Sync keeps FPS at the same rate as your screen refresh rate
