Clear windscreen question

capture_2023-04-22_12-53-36 copy.jpg

If I black out the windscreen, it looks like this, If I select the area and cut it out, leaving a hole, it completely vanishes, and I have a too-clear windscreen.
So does anyone know how to give a light tint to the area? And still, have it see-through?

It seems that there is more to the DDS format than I realized. When converting or saving the image as a DDS I think It needs to be saved as DXT5 (Interpolated Alpha). I don't know what this alpha channel does, but it is apparently needed for clear glass. I will keep pushing on and post anything I learn here.

So after a lot of fussing, I have finally worked out how to get the shade I want.

Open the DDS file for the window with Gimp.
Uncheck the load mipmaps option, or things get very confusing.
Then select the area for the windshield. Use select by color or draw around the edge.
Choose a nice foreground color, then fill the area with the foreground color.

Now the bit it took me ages to work out.
In the color menu tab. Select "Color to Alpha"

A dialogue box will open. Use the "Transparency Threshold" to adjust the level of transparency.

Now export the file and be sure to get the name correct.
