After Motorsport Games and Studio 397 announced their upcoming Le Mans Ultimate title, we went along to the real life Le Mans event to experience the unreleased sim first-hand.

The developers behind rFactor 2, Studio 397 and their parent company Motorsport Games recently revealed that a new sim will be hitting the market in December 2023. This title, called Le Mans Ultimate, will allow players to experience the World Endurance Championship.

While many of the cars and tracks are available across other sims, including rFactor 2, Le Mans Ultimate promises to bring something new to the table as a standalone title. To introduce the game to the world, Motorsport Games brought a demo version to the real life Le Mans event. There, eager WEC fans could try it for themselves. Our editor Angus couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take a look.

Le Mans Ultimate Gameplay

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Angus reported that Le Mans Ultimate feels similar to rFactor 2. In fact, it seems to have been developed in the same engine and uses the same physics model. Naturally, this meant that the overall experience was pretty good for an early demo version.

There were some issues, though. For instance, Angus reported a lack of feeling on the brakes. This means that it was difficult to avoid lockups, and to properly get the car slowed down on corner entry.

Another problem was to found in the form of the kerbs. They were very aggressive, causing the car to lose balance and stability at the drop of a hat.

The two cars available for selection were the Ferrari 488 GTE and the Porsche 963 hypercar. Angus opted for the latter, as it is not yet available in rFactor 2.

In terms of sound design and force feedback, there was clearly still a lot of development left to be done. The soundscape in particular lacked many of the elements one would expect, such as wind noise and the sound of the transmission.

Those lights need to be tuned down, the "stars" ⭐ look HUGE and are very fake, that's not now real lighting looks. It's overdone.

I hope that public servers work and that they are populated and that they are not 3+ hours practice with a 10mins race as in RF2 now. I also hope that mods are disabled, those things ruin RF2 currently and I even gave up on the title because of all the issues. I hope that they learned from their mistakes.

Opinions. Opinions. Opinions. 1 year playing rf2, 700 hours. Just finished our first season in VEC with my friends a few days ago. Can't be more satisfied with the sim itself. I don't care about MSG. I'm going to trust s397 just like I trusted in Reiza. If finally I get dissapointed like with Reiza there's no big problem, my life will keep going on (I hope). But so far, rf2 is the most funny sim I've ever driven and the endurace pack is simply amazing for me. Thinking in a game focused on it only can make me happy.

so this is the same engine as Rf2….so essentially Rf2 has been split into a new title? Trying to get excited ……but not sure if it this is the Same game being sold separately as a totally new sim .

"Preview build" bit of a giveaway this is a build that has probably been around a while. Also wtf are people on about looks like a 2009 rf2 build you can't make out how good or bad the graphics are when it's been filmed with a camera.

Well of course that was the plan with buying all those licenses. Take the Rf2 platform, make a bunch of games out of that and...profit. So far the only fact we have is Nascar 21: Ignition.

Maybe I'll be repetitive but I keep thinking the same thing: S397 needs to think about improving and fixing all the rF2 messes, especially the multiplayer. I'm a fan of WEC but I don't think at all about buying something I already have with rF2... I rather invest the money in hardware or something else.

it uses the same engines, pmotor for physics and gmotor for graphics, devs on discord said its en evolution and is better than what could be done to rF2 itself (think legacy content holding back some changes due to them breaking it) and the first few videos from people using it at Le Mans seems to confirm improvements, hopefully towards release we get some more info in that regard, since I have to see it for myself to judge

not every program is the same, because its compiled with the same C-Compiler :roflmao:
in such a special series dependent version they can add special functions like WEC rule sets, pitstop rules, automatic scoreboards, championships, career and other things that wouldn't make sense for an open game like RF2.
All that "arcady" features, a "real" sim racer never wants ;)
Compared to Codemasters F1 its the much better solution. F1 has the better environment, rule sets, F1 feeling, etc, but AC/AMS2/iRacing has the better physics and handling. So nothing is 100%, either or.
In this case a WEC game based on a real sim looks interesting

It's all cool and stuff, but I would really like to see some proper rally sim, because you've got a lot of choice in circuit racing, but maybe 2 or 3 rally sims to choose. I wonder if it's gonna change anytime soon.
Would be great indeed with good vr, physics etc

Mixed feelings there. I thought it could be a good opportunity for 397 to shine with a full new game with a narrower perimeter. But I heard there is that it's rfactor2 but the physics, the graphics and the sounds are a downgrade and the technical flaws of rfactor2 are there. Why showing the game in this state? Will it be really ready in 6 months ? I really have doubts now. I think I read that the game has been in development for 2 years starting from existing engine and tracks, 2 cars are out and at least one doesn't feel good and 6 months are left to complete the game. Ok...
