Race against DLC you don't own in rFactor 2

In a Facebook announcement today, Studio 397 announced a slight delay for their Q1 build. While the GT3's will get their promised updated the 7th of February, the game-build will be delayed two weeks until the 21st, as the Studio wants to polish the new feature.

One of the issues many players have had with rFactor 2, is the fact that you need to own all content that is present on the server. If you want to race a DPi-car in a RaceDepartment Club Race against LMP2's and GTE's, you would have to buy all cars. If you the next week want to race a Ferrari GT3 in a GT3 event, you would have to buy the 11 other GT3 cars as well. This is finally going to change in rFactor 2.

As the rFactor 2 announcement says:
So, let’s tell you one of the big reasons why we want to delay… this Friday, we will update our Release Candidate with a new feature… the ability to race online against content you don’t own! Exciting as this is, we just need more time to polish it all up, and a few other bits, so we hope you don’t mind a little delay – I’m sure you will think it was worth the wait!

There is no doubt that this is a feature that have been requested for a long time, and it's taken Studio 397 quite a time to untangle the old rF2 code and being able to make these changes. While it doesn't state with clarity how this will work, it is an important step forward.
It will also make life easier for server hosts, as there is less of a need to focus on what kind of DLC is being used.

It will come for the Release Candidate already this Friday, but with all beta-builds, they may contain bugs. Stable release is planned for the 21st of February.

I've been a motorsport-fan for as long as I can remember. Initially a rallycross-maniac, but got into F1 around the time I started school. Got my first sim when I was 7, but didn't start properly until I got a wheel when I was 12. Been a staff at RaceDepartment since 2012. Mainly the dirty-guy who does rally-stuff here. But also management-titles and rFactor 2.

Sure, but very generous title is "Race against DLC you don't own in rFactor 2", making S397/MSG look like a charity. Could have been: "Race online against car DLC you don't own in rFactor 2".
Race AGAINST DLC … how would you drive AGAINST a track? You are just searching to make bad comments about something that has been on a wish list of a lot of people and also has been one of its major shortcomings for online racing.

Has been impossible on Iracing for a long time so had to buy there shitloads off cars to be able to race , Dont even know if its still mandatory in iracing to own all cars
and that selfoverrated iracing still cant use the content one bought OFFLINE So fc stop complaining here , go Iceracing
Many years that it's not. Only need one car to race on a series or multiclass series.

People complain because: not have the money, don't want to spend ( for drinks it's ok even if more expensive ) or just because they are compulsive complainers. Sure there are even more reasons, just named a few ... ;)

That is simply not true.I race against AI all the time in Iracing that I dont own. There were a few series in the past that made you buy all the cars but it is not true now.You just buy 1 car per series.

But to pursue your beautiful logic to absurdity, how one race AGAINST DLC ? Racing against cars or people or drivers maybe, but AGAINST DLC ?

Rubbish, been there for 15 years. I don't ever remember this.

If you want to race in lots of series you have to buy the content but you have never needed to buy a car you are not racing to be able to race alongside it.

This is awesome news. Having to buy the entire endurance pack when you want to race a Porsche RSR in a league is a tough sell.

And to those mentioning AMS2, yes you can race on tracks you don't own BUT someone who owns it has to be on the server but if you don't own the cars (and you can't buy a single car for the paid dlc) you can't race. Still an awesome feature, but it has limitations as well.

This is decent , I bought rf2 on a humble bundle and it's become more appealing. Must install it at some point .

In current rF2 system more annoying is the lack of server content list feature. You can't see what mods exactly are used on server. Even with owning every DLC, server can start a random download.
People seem to forget that because rF2 is moddable and most servers are run by random people on the internet, DLC content may be mixed with third party (e.g. something from the Steam Workshop). If you don't have that mod, then yes, a download will start.

I have no idea how someone can get so bent out of shape about some semantics. Ofcourse MSG and S397 aren't charity organizations, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to acknowledge when developers do something good and listen to their customers. I know, that's hard to comprehend because it doesn't comply with the current image of MSG/S397, that many people seems to share for whatever reason. Since the start of last year we have seen a steady flow of urgent improvements, very good interaction with the devs and some fine content. What else do you need?

Will the update regards DLC content not owned, also apply to offline Single races (similar to RaceRoom Racing Experience) ?

Good one! If they can enable racing against cars you don’t own online, then this also should be possible when choosing offline opponents.

Trying to get out of their EA sports image...

However if the smallest companies can do it (both cars and tracks), it's not really anything groundbreaking in the sim racing world... And given MSGS's situation over the past few months does give off an air of desperation...

But overall a positive move, so kudos to them...
