MX vs ATV Legends Picks Up Official Monster Energy Supercross Licence

In a surprise twist, instead of a dedicated Supercross game for this year, the American dirt bike championship will feature as DLC for MX vs ATV Legends.

MX vs ATV Legends, the open-world motocross game, will receive official Monster Energy Supercross content for the first time later this month.

In a significant move for the motorcycle gaming industry, since 2018 Italian developer Milestone (Ride 5, Hot Wheels Unleashed, MotoGP) has released a yearly game dedicated to the AMA-run real-world championship.

Up until 2023, across the first five games to that point, the series had sold over 2.3 million units. Last year, Monster Energy Supercross 6 was released on PC and console, featuring the venues and riders from the 2022 season and a particular focus on ‘The King’, Jeremy McGrath. It is not yet known if a ‘Supercross 7’ is in development.

The SX news follows Nacon recently acquiring Milestone’s other dirt bike licence, the FIM Motocross World Championship (MXGP). The former World Rally Championship game developer Kylotonn is now working on an all-new title alongside the Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown project.

MX vs ATV Monster Energy Supercross DLC

Official tracks and branding from the US-based stadium championship will be sold as a downloadable content pass for MX vs ATV Legends.

Not all the venues will be available initially. The first batch will arrive on 20th February 2024, with the following seven tracks:
  • Anaheim
  • Anaheim 2
  • Arlington
  • Detroit
  • Glendale
  • San Diego
  • San Francisco
Then, the remaining nine locations will arrive in-game four days before the remaining championship rounds. These are on the following dates:
  • Birmingham – 05.03.2024
  • Indianapolis – 12.03.2024
  • Seattle – 19.03.2024
  • St. Louis – 26.03.2024
  • Foxborough – 09.04.2024
  • Nashville – 16.04.2024
  • Philadelphia – 23.04.2024
  • Denver – 30.04.2024
  • Salt Lake City – 07.05.2024
Of note, the Supercross venue that’s made each year at the Daytona International Speedway (and held a round in March of this year) is omitted – despite it featuring in the Milestone-created games.

It now means that MX vs ATV Legends has available content from both AMA-sanctioned off-road motorcycle series. Two DLC packs, 2022 and 2023, for the Pro Motocross Championship have previously been released.

Motocross focuses predominately on outdoor tracks, while Supercross’s USP is temporary stadium venues. At the end of the season, the two series combine for the SuperMotocross World Championship.

MX vs ATV Legends 2024 Monster Energy Supercross Championship DLC

To commemorate the deal, Legends will be re-released in a new retail package including the 2024 Monster Energy Supercross Championship DLC for $29.99/€29.99/£24.99.

The DLC alone, for existing game owners, will be priced at €19.99/$19.99/£15.99.

The Journey Thus Far

MX vs ATV Legends was initially released for PC, PlayStation and Xbox in June 2022 and was beset with technical challenges and stiff handling.

Developed by industry veterans Rainbow Studios for THQ Nordic, parent company Embracer Group went on record to state its ire about its initial lacklustre sales performance.

“That performance was below our management expectations,” said Lars Wingefors, Founder and CEO of Embracer Group, during an earnings call in August 2022.

MX vs ATV Legends 2024 Monster Energy Supercross Championship DLC launch

The funereal mood was heightened by alleged reports of team layoffs in September.

However, since then, regular quality-of-life updates and paid DLC have arrived for the ever-evolving platform. While not an out-and-out simulator like MX Bikes, it does have a harder edge to it than some contemporaries.

The racing video game industry is well and truly cooked.

The MX VS ATV series has devolved into absolute garbage, and now this is integrated as DLC?

They all need to go broke and go away.

I have MXGP2 and I really like the game. I have not played it in a while because after a bit I felt like I needed more tracks to keep it interesting. I do think it is a pretty fun and challenging game.

Woah, wait, there's a VR mod?!
The free "UEVR" mod can enable VR in a lot of games running Unreal Engine 4 or 5. I myself have tried it with EA's WRC and it's very promising, although I'll probably just wait for official VR support and see what comes of it, not being that excited about the game.

The idea of a motocross game in VR... in first person? Well, I am interested to hear people's experiences.

I don't play games like "Ride" because controllers (MS, PS, etc) feel awkward to me. The idea of sitting in a chair with my headset on, with my touch controllers attached with a simple 1-2 foot straight bar, seems like the best way to simulate motorcycle racing. Yeah, that sounds like a really good time, I'm in.

The only thing good in this game is the (very limited) split screen mode. Other than that... nevermind.

It looks nice and all that, but, if you want a really (like, really) challenging MX sim, get in on the MXBikes action. The graphics are dx 9 all the way (so it runs on a spud) , and the slow physics are at best questionable... But you're not supposed to be going slow ... But the modders release tracks, bikes and riding gear left right and centre.
The game itself has native VR, not tried it yet, but I will once I am able to complete a damn lap!!
Its super hard to get the grips of initially, but when you do, its is so dang rewarding. Just getting the timing and speed right, floating over tripples, controlling your weight .. just everything. It scratches my sim its on 2 wheels. If you can get past the 2010 graphics, its a damn hoot!
