The numbers for the most played racing games on Steam in January 2024 are in, and the first month of the year sees a new leader of the racing pack.

Note: While iRacing is available on Steam as well, its numbers are not representative as most players acces the sim through its own UI. As a result, its statistics are not included in this article.

After spending most of the second half of 2023 at the top of the list, BeamNG.drive had to yield to Forza Horizon 5 again – but only just. While FH5‘s January peak is significantly higher, both titles are very close when it comes to average players. Big publisher and open-world setting versus indie developer and sandbox premise – it sounds like an uneven fight on paper, yet the very different approaches are a close match month after month.

ACC & AMS2 Gain More Traction

Meanwhile, Assetto Corsa Competizione managed to jump F1 23. This is likely due to the release of the new update and GT2 Pack DLC, which also introduced the Red Bull Ring to the premier GT3 sim. With the Formula One season set to kick off on March 2 in Bahrain, F1 23 might be fired up more frequently again around that time, though.

Further down the order, Automobilista 2 made another big step forward. After an average player increase of 44.34% in December already, it seems that Reiza Studios’ continued efforts pay off in 2024 as well. Off the back of its Endurance Pack and Le Mans release on New Year’s Eve as well as smaller updates throughout January, the sim has hit an all-time high for average players again.

Interestingly, the start of the WRC season did not help EA Sports WRC‘s numbers. Instead, it lost more ground to DiRT Rally 2.0, which is still the most played rally game as a result. This is despite the January update to fix numerous big bugs, especially in career mode.

nobody talk about the 1400 users lost after one week from the release.
Where are them ? why they don't play this game ? What casue this leaking of 1400 players?

We will never have an article that tries to analyze this and it should be the only interesting article for the users and the company. (they ban or insult people that disagre with the title)

AMS2 has a playerbase who always does the same. Reiza launches a DLC, people comeback play it a bit, go away, play a bit here and there and the circle goes around.. I say it because is what I do. Let's say I play it at each 10-15 days. Every game peaks when new content is added, ACC earned and more or less already lost 2k in players around the GT2 DLC launch. Do you want a article about it too, or just one to trash AMS/Reiza?

You can take your haterism on them or to the game as much you want, but everytime AMS2 peaks, the bar stabilizes at higher numbers ;)

Reiza just needs to add more custom Championship slots and my playtime will for sure become equal with AC.....

The peak of a new release is always going to be higher than the peak of any 24 hour subsequent period.

These stats are all basically useless at showing how many people actually play or own a game.

Is it the same 1100 people every day? Is it a different 1000? Is it a mix of both? Does the average being near the peak mean it is played more than a title with a high peak but lower lows?

Who knows, there just isn't enough info. Good for clicks though.
Yes, despite the number of times it's been pointed out the complete inability of some people to understand the difference between concurrent usage and individual users is remarkable.

AMS2 is more a single player game at the moment so people aren't trying to line up there sessions with other players most of the time. I'm very rarely playing at times most people would call peak hours in Europe.

Looking through the list, my future list would be a developer with a new engine & new sim. its time for a change and some developer to shake up the sim industry. To many are complacent releasing early access. Marcel Offerman and "the last garage" might be the 1st of many, time will tell. But that's what we need.

I enjoy sim racing in what is probably the weirdest and least popular way possible, but it doesn't stop me. Don't let the internet decide what sim racing game is for you, just let it show you the options, and you decide.
