How To Take Seriously Sensational Screenshots In BeamNG.drive

Jungle Rock Island.jpg
Screenshots in BeamNG.drive can be confusing. Using the tips and tools listed below will get you more confidence behind the lens of BeamNG's awesome photo mode. Not only that, but it might even teach you some things about how to take real-life photos.

Van Main Image.jpg

Screenshot Composition

The word 'Composition' is simply a fancy way of saying how things are laid out in your frame. For example, where the vehicle is placed and what is in the background and foreground. Imagine taking screenshots within BeamNG as painting a portrait or a landscape. Creating the perfect environment for your subject is crucial.

Grid Method

The most common and practised composition creation method in digital photography is the grid method (Thirds Method). The focal point should always be on at least one of the 2 vertical lines. This helps significantly with composition because it means you don't end up with the vehicle in the centre of your screenshot without any purpose.

Grid Example.jpg V8 Drift Without Grid.jpg

I used the grid lines to align the rear bumper of the car to the left corner of the screen. The two vertical grid lines are going through the middle of the rear wheel as well as the middle of the front wheel. It isn't going to win me any awards, but the screenshot is geometrically correct.

Fibonacci Spiral

A much less common tool compared to the Grid method; the Fibonacci Spiral is centred around the subject of the image, in this case, a vehicle. A Fibonacci spiral can be rotated at any right angle or even flipped.

Your screenshot will have to either be edited after you have taken it within BeamNG or you will have to utilize a physical Fibonacci Spiral on your monitor screen which is a major downside to this method.

Fibonacci Spiral.png

Accuracy is a lot harder to achieve with the Fibonacci Spiral compared to the grid method. It still stands as a practised and respected form of composition creation in photography. Your time may be better spent getting to grips with the in-built grid filter in BeamNG's photo mode.

Field Of View (FOV)

Field Of View is one of the most useful and versatile tools on offer within BeamNG's photo editor. Nailing the FOV of your screenshots will separate a normal photo from a desktop wallpaper-worthy shot. The correct FOV can also allow you to negate any blur in your image. You're not just zooming in you're changing what the camera lens can see.

10 FOV.jpg60 FOV.jpg120 FOV.jpg

The definition of FOV within games is the extent of the observable game world that is seen on the display at any given moment. There are two ways to adjust the FOV for your screenshots in BeamNG. You can alter it using the Photo Debug option, or simply use the slider in the Photomode options.

Colour Palette

Making sure your colour palette choices are appropriate can make or break your screenshot. If you have a group of murdered-out saloon cars approaching your frame from a menacing angle, a bright yellow Ibishu Pigeon just off to the left will ruin the vibe of your image. Example A...

Colour Palette .jpg

Creating an atmosphere with a matching and complimenting colour palette is an overlooked aspect of screenshot composition and planning. Creating a plan for the vehicles and their colours before you load up photo mode is essential to a well-executed screenshot.

Aspect Ratio

Aspect Ratio is often determined by the format that your screenshot will be uploaded to. If you are creating a YouTube banner, then an elongated landscape aspect ratio. Whereas if TikTok is your chosen platform, then a portrait ratio would be appropriate. If you intend to just upload the screenshot to Reddit or onto the forums then the standard ratio would be perfect.

Cinematic Screenshots

Taking planned and intricately executed cinematic screenshots is truly a form of art. I am delighted to introduce you to RaceDepartment veteran M D Gourley. He has very kindly let us use his screenshots to display just what can be possible within BeamNG when you know what you're doing and you have experience with the necessary tools.

This is why I said you should start your own thread on these subjects years ago :x3:

Personally I have always thought your 'HomePage" could become one if not the top Beam places to be seen :x3:

At very least a sticky thread ( with no replies no questions no debates ... just info and lovely shots )

"The golden ratio, in the eyes of non-mathematicians, seems to have risen to the status of a mysterious entity whose supposed presence signifies something special. Despite in reality being simply a useful and interesting ratio in geometry and other branches of mathematics, it has been touched by fringe theories and sensationalism since the Victorian era. The many purported cases of the golden ratio are down to people’s “natural desire to find meaning in the pattern of the universe”, Devlin says. Whether the golden rectangle is beautiful and the 1.618 ratios in paintings by Da Vinci and others are intentional, or whether people just see what they want to see, these things would seem to be more down to personal opinion than science."

Good article still :)

Thank you for your kind words Connor, great write up and information:thumbsup:
I do not intend to hijack your Post but hopefully add some more realivent information to help out the RD readers:)

Thoroughly enjoying the updated 'Photo Mode' control with the added 'Sun Direction' slider as for me personally this allows for more creative 'Lighting' and 'Shadow' placement within the composed Screenshot:cool:...nice work BeamNG Devs, but hopefully reducing the increments from '6' everytime the left / right arrow Keys are pressed, to '1' increment would be best in the 'Sun Direction' to allow for more precise placement:thumbsup:

Below Screenshots show the Gavril Bluebuck Stockcar (one of many personal favs:inlove:) in front of the molten metal bucket in the 'Hot Rolled Steel' works (awesome glow onto surrounding objects from the molten metal BeamNG Devs:geek:)....then once the screenshot has been composed you can adjust the 'Time of Day' and 'Sun Direction' to create some graphic light / shadow elements into the screenshot for added interest.

This will require a lot of fiddling around with the sliders to find the right combination of the 'Time of Day' and 'Sun Direction' to see where the sun shines and what shadows it creates:)

The 'Time of Day' and 'Sun Direction' sliders used to create the subtle extra lighting into the screenshot image. It's just a matter of moving the sliders and seeing where the sun ray light and shadows fall within the screenshot for personal preference:geek:

Going into 'World Editor' with in 'Photo Mode' (press F11) you can to add extra lights into the Screenshots to fill in the shadows or add reflective light:geek:...all within BeamNG, amazing.

Below is a BEFORE screenshot as it is within the BeamNG scene when composed.

This second screenshot is 'AFTER' I have been into 'World Editor' and added some extra lighting...awesome what you can do;)

Below is what is done in 'World Editor' ( F11) to get extra lighting.
Click 'Create Object' icon which will bring up another Tool bar...click on the 'Point Light' icon, drag into scene, then 'Close' tool bar by clicking 'Create Object' icon again.

Go to top Menu Bar, click on 'Window' and find 'Scene Tree' click to get list, use this to find your individual Point Lights, then go back to Window and click on 'Inspector' use this to adjust properties of each Point Light when selected.
Once all lights where placed and adjusted, press 'F11' again to exit World editor then open up 'Photo Mode' and compose the Screenshot.

This is an absolute game changer for the Screen shot creater such as myself.
Time spent 5 hours learning to do it...loved every second:inlove:

'Photo Mode' in BeamNG is just superb:geek:...if your vehicle is not quite positioned in the screenshot image frame the way you want it, without going out of Photo Mode you can still drive your vehicle and move it slightly to another spot within the screenshot:O_o:

1st Screenshot, I was happy with the composition overall, but did not like the car positioning.
000 BeamNG GARVIL on BRIDGE.JPG

Without going out of 'Photo Mode' your car is still driveable...much like driving a 'Radio controlled' vehicle...so it can be moved to it's new location further along the Bridge:geek:

Sometimes when composing a Screenshot there is an element you wish was not there...in BeamNG, no problem, just go into 'World Editor' find the element and click the 'Eye Icon' next to it to hide it:geek:...mind blown:inlove:

1st Screenshot showing the 'Pole' that I wanted to remove.
8 BeamNG V8 Gavril Barstow at COASTAL FISHING TOWN Pole Removed copy.jpg

...'Pole' is removed, amazing functionality:geek:
8a BeamNG V8 Gavril Barstow at COASTAL FISHING TOWN Pole Removed copy.jpg

Removing 'Elements' from a scene is not always possible though as they can be grouped with a lot of other elements... e.g. In the above scene the 'Pole' may have been grouped with say the Bridge the vehicle was on, so clicking the 'Eye' icon would have made the Pole and Bridge disappear making this screenshot of no use....usually luck that an individual element can be made to disappear.:)

Want to create an 'Action' screenshot in BeamNG, why yes you can, just 'Record' the action first then replay the 'Replay' pausing at the moment that makes for a great action screenshot, then enter 'Photo Mode'.

Once paused in Photo Mode and the screenshot has been composed you can still Rewind / Forward / Slow down the Replay footage without going out of Photo Mode to get that perfect placement:thumbsup:...just use the 'Replay' keys for movement.

TIP: make sure the Rewind / Forward of the replay is very slow;)...as the vehicle may disappear out of the composed Screenshot, it has not gone but the vehicle has rewinded back or moved futher forward from your paused moment within the screenshot:confused:

Below are some previously saved Action Replays and Screen Shots taken from them as well as giving attention to adjusting the 'Time of Day' and 'Sun Direction' for better lighting and also adjusting the 'Depth of Field' in the background of some screenshots;)...personal opinion only
