Happy 10-Year Anniversary Euro Truck Simulator 2!

ETS2_10yearanni.jpg
On October 18th, 2012 Euro Truck Simulator first saw the light of day. Going into open development that day, one of the most successful simulators on earth started being played. Let us join together in wishing it a Happy Birthday!

SCS Software, developers of Euro Truck Simulator and American Truck Simulator, unveiled their wonderchild "Euro Truck Simulator 2" on this day in 2012. Since its release and over the years, the game has garnered an immense audience, being played regularly by over 40.000 people at the same time.

It's actually interesting (to a statistics nerd like me) to see the development of ETS2 player numbers over the years. What started with 2.000 concurrent players grew over the years to the height of 60.000 players at a single time!

This success can only come from a dedicated team of developers. So thank you SCS Software! And congratulations on creating such a time-sink of a game!

What is Euro Truck Simulator 2?

If you don't know this phenomenon of gaming and simulation software, a look at its Steam page could help!

But let me briefly introduce you if you haven't heard:

You drive around Europe in trucks. Big rigs. Like the one, you see in the image before the article. You drive around Europe delivering stuff with your truck. Sounds incredibly mundane, I grant you. But it is so very enticing and relaxing to just drive around these virtual roads, abiding by the speed limits and building your virtual logistics empire (luckily without a lack of skilled labour).

Yes, you can found your own company and hire drivers to work for you. With the money gained, you can buy more garages in different cities and therefore enlarge your company and hire more drivers!

But the true joy comes in driving and just relaxing on the road.

And yes, it has wheel support.

And yes, you can play in VR.

The 10-Year Anniversary World of Trucks Event

Of course, if you know ETS2, you will be well aware of the regular online events the game boasts. This anniversary is, of course, no different.

But this event is a little simpler than usual. You just need to complete 1 delivery. And your reward? An achievement in World of Trucks.

And this:

These beautiful paint jobs can be yours.

But that's not all!

You can win 2 limited edition "Euro Truck Simulator 2"-branded Thrustmaster T248 wheels! One you can win by watching their birthday live stream, and the other by being luckily drawn out of social media posts boasting the hashtag #10YearsETS2.

You can find more information here.

I know it's not comparable to all those racing sims but I'd wish there was much better ffb, physics and roadfeel. Feels quite dull tbh.

Other than that it's a great distraction from real life to cruise across Europe.

Without mods, this game is really basic and outdated. But when the mods break after pretty much every major update, we have to wait months for the mod getting updated. I had to stop modding this game because sometimes even a very basic mod as a skin broke. I'm glad I didn't go that deep into making 3D tuning mods because the amount of spam I got on the SCS Forum "HY MAKE DIS TUNNING AS MOD PLEAS ALSO DIS SPECIFIC TRUKK SKIN COMBO JUST FOR ME TY" was so unbearable I couldn't take it anymore. And when I dared to make an Andreas Schubert Transporte tuning pack to pay respect to the legendary trucker, once again spams that "HE NEVER WANTED HIS TRUCKS IN THE GAME THIS IS DISRESPECT", when there was literally ZERO source about this. Of course, extremely poor and distorted jpegs on trucks featuring Andreas Schubert on the picture with inaccurate birth date is wayy better and more allowed than days of modelling and proper skinning work:

And when you want to make this game seriously inmersive, you have to go deep in your pocket. Quality and accurate truck mods suddenly started to disappear from the SCS Forums because they turned paid, MadSter, Fred_be, and honestly I don't want to see who's next.
Same, extremely old mods with off, distorted models getting updated by the 10th person who take care of compatibility because the author stopped modding.
Do I need to mention graphics mods? Realistic textures mod turned from donation begging into locked behind paywall, and that graphics mod, that actually did something with the 15 year old looking game making it 8 years old looking, was the eptiome of greed. First I had to pay 15€, I guess that's somewhat fine. But when the author decided to make a version 2 for another 15€, that was just enough. Want worse? There are classes now. The more you pay, the higher DIAMOND ULTRA PLATINA EXTREME version you get. If I would start the game again, I have to spend like 50€ to make to make the game look ok :roflmao:

In AC the absolute best modders ask 15€ for a 3 car pack at max, and you get an insanely accurate mod. Here you have to pay 25€ for a polybomb that makes your game crash because the game engine.

Official content wise, I guess still no old trucks, no Next-gen trucks except the Scanias and the new DAFs, no dirt, and let me guess, tandem trucks got reduced to atoms that were teased to be in works like, 8 years ago? They always come up with "Truck manufacturers don't want to see damage and dirt on their trucks, and old trucks don't reflect the company so not gonna happen" yadda yadda yadda. Spintires: Hi.

I hate when a game has to rely on mods to be actually decent. Assetto Corsa is an exception for me because how widely expandable it is and the engine is not 150 years old Prism3D that can't handle it.

SCS seriously needs competition. They are not a tiny team, they have like 200+ employees but I feel sometimes way smaller teams can do better justice.

Why am I ranting about this here tho? Keep on truckin' guys ;)

Happy 10 year anniversy I guess.

The game is what it is, I love it in bursts. Waiting for UK to be finally updated (M5/M4 junction which I use a LOT is SO wrong). Would like more in depth "garage" simulation (monthly costs rather than one off payment, truck maintenance of the fleet not just the players trucks etc, I have 1.7 billion and sod all to spend it on!). I'd also like an official mode to get rid of the floaty massive neon icons...got a lot of mods which get rid of all that stuff but not flawlessly. And as mentioned better FFB...SO notchy with my old Fanatec CSR (forza 3 edition).

I have about over 2500 hours in this game. But since they switched to DX11 in the 1.36 update, im out of updates, as no antialising included. They dont care about it, and its not like that problem exists since yesterday. Jagged lines, edges and the peformace is bad as f***. Its 2022, i think SCS isnt aware of that.

Driving time regulations, multiple drop off points, cabin lights, full parking spots at night, better AI and so on. This were all requested at the SCS forums for years from their #bestcommunity in the world, instead of this you have a look at their blog and find a new paintjob pack, viewpoints, some advertising of their new DLC or new city intros or other kind of BS. Im really sick and tired of this lately.

Better they will show something substantial in the stream today.

This. They don't care as much as they pretend they do. I had to use 300% scalling to make the game look okay but you can't imagine how much my 1050 Ti suffered. It's basically tripling the resolution, so I had to choose between 35-40fps or extremely pixelated screen. The game is terribly unoptimized. Back then I was also playing Assetto Corsa that run at 80fps with CSP, mostly high settings, a DDM car that is kinda detailed polygon model of GT6 and Tsukuba that is a GT Sport conversion.

Forget immersiveness without mods, best they can do is a paintjob about immersiveness.

I enjoy the game as it is, a relaxing alternative to the pressures of sim racing and real life. It could be better, but there isn't a driving game around which couldn't be improved. If they'd just introduce the three day wait to get through British customs into mainland Europe it would be much more realistic.

As someone who has driven some bigger machines with hydraulic steering and big tyres, I can say that you don't have much road feel or forces on the wheel. You can turn the wheel with one finger and you don't feel the road texture at all. ETS2 already has way more FFB effects, than you would feel in a real modern truck.

Great post. This also applies to sim cars and real-life cars. Driving a modern car is often like controlling a toy - which does make me wonder about the false reality of sim racing and all the BS sim reviewers come out with re tyre deformation, Tarmac feel, Newton meters etc (esp that Aussie reviewer). Maybe sim game reviewers don't actually own a car, or don't drive enough to know what reality is like (most certainly they don't race them). They are caught up in and love the geeky simulation details instead.

true, it's all stuff that we feel in our bodies...but it has to be conveyed somehow as we don't have full motion rigs! The wheel is the only way to do that.

Interesting information, didn't know that.

I've always loved ETS2 because it allowed me to do a relaxing simulation, when I wanted to drive but didn't want the frenzy of simracing, but then I liked it more and more and honestly I couldn't do without it anymore. Happy Birthday ETS2 !!!

D
Yet, still no Ireland :(. I want to drive hours and hours in Ireland. Forgetting who I am. Just an Irish truckers. From Derry to Cork. Smoking cigars, drinking energy, listening to the radio. Then make my way from Cork to Dublin and then from Dublin to Belfast. Irish fiddle music on the background too... and those narrow roads in the rural area's...

One of the interresting games on my HDD which i never gonna play^^

I just need something more "exciting" after work, not work again

This game gave me many hours of gaming enjoyment, especially when it was new, and I was in dire need of some entertainment.
Nowadays, it has gone a bit stale, I think.

I bought ETS2 on sales, wasn't expecting much of it, and I was surprised by how interesting and relaxing this game can be. With a good podcast to listen to, it definitely is a great experience. I wasn't hooked enough to start modding it like I do for Assetto Corsa, but I totally understand why there is such a vast modding community.

Mate, i really understand you.. I did play ETS2 since day 1.. And you're completly right..

Where is the South America Truck simulator?

I want to drive in this roads:

iu

I want criminals trying to steal my cargo... I want to cross illegal products from Paraguay into Brazil... I want to drive a truck with Parana's registration plate just to bash cars from São Paulo and Santa Catarina off the road... I want to drink rebite... to listen to sertanejo radios and get STDs on resting stops.

Please, deliver us the true Tuck Simulator!

I managed to solve the jagged lines and AA issues following this guide:

the downside is that you have to re apply the nvidia settings after every driver update though...
