PISTA Motorsport: New Dev Log Announces Early Access, Confirms Mods

PISTA Motorsport developer REG Simulations is back with another dev log for their project, announcing more content, an Early Access release, the game being open to mods, and more.

For quite a while, things had fallen silent around PISTA Motorsport, the simulator-to-be by AC-modders-turned-developers REG Simulations. The title aims to celebrate motorsport in their native Argentina, including series like Turismo Carretera. Since the studio's fourth dev log had been released in October of 2023, they had fallen quiet.

In May 2024, they are back, however, and the South American devs have quite a few news to share. First and foremost: the decision to release PISTA Motorsport in an Early Access format on Steam. The role model for are Kunos and Assetto Corsa, according to the dev log, "as Early Access was what allowed them to improve and grow at a steady pace."

"Surprise" In First Public Version​

At the same time, REG Simulations does not intend to release PISTA with only a couple of game modes. Instead, "the first public version will have offline practice mode and also online time trial", the latter featuring leaderboards. "In addition to these two game modes, we are going to include a surprise that we will be announcing later."

While the dev log does not give a release date yet, it hints that the first public version may not be too far away anymore. "We are very careful with dates, but we hope to a have a specific release day as soon as possible, and we are convinced that that day will be soon."

Meanwhile, the dev log also answers select frequently asked questions. The FAQ confirm that there will be mods in PISTA Motorsport, and the developers intend to give modders a platform to properly implement their work:

"We think of PISTA Motorsport as a great platfrom that covers as much content as possible. We want modders to really get what they deserve for the work and time spent on the platform, and that's why we focus on avoiding at all costs that they suffer from piracy of their content. This is why once launched to the public, we will invite all modders to join the project by contributing their work and receiving a real benefit for their time and dedication, in a real and serious store that allows them to share their work without worrying about piracy or unwanted use of their 3D [assets]."

Other answers concern the content that is going to be in PISTA Motorsport once it launches. Five circuits have been confirmed by the developers, all of them located in Argentina.

Cars, on the other hand, have not been confirmed yet. The dev log shows two new classes to be in the works, those being the Clase 3 of the Turismo Pista series as seen in the header image of this article, the other being the Procar 4000 class.

Furthermore, REG Simulations have implemented replay and garage modes - the latter allows racers to modify their setups as well as aesthetical elements of their cars, if available.


Finally, the developers explained their ambitions for PISTA Motorsport's online mode. The title is set to offer an easy-to-use environment for leagues, including tools for race control, brodacasting and organization. Additionally, PISTA aims to make it easy for players to host their own lobbies if they prefer doing so over competing in weekly events. A license system is also set to be included.

Of all the new titles (outside of AC EVO) this one and last garage peek my interest more than the others. I like how this title has no gt3 cars in the screen shots. Also I like to be exposed to racing series and tracks I am not familiar with!!

Seriously, I'm very interested by this new title. I like it when a sim can make me discover tracks, cars and racing series that I didn't know anything about before.

What game engine are they using?

The upcoming sim is going make use of Unity HDRP. According to Gaglio, this decision was made "because we found a good combination of performance, physics and graphical realism as well as its extensive adaptability and dynamic nature for working on our ideas."

Modding with a store? Doesn't that open up the modders to liability in that they would be making money off of the likenesses of licensed material for which they haven't received permission? Do modders have to seek out these permissions now?

Maybe they'll be fine so long as they don't make a mod of Mario's kart... :O_o:

ACEvo, Last Garage and Pista are all going to take time away from other sims for me... Definitely going to be jumping onboard to see where it ends up... I do enjoy the early stages of game developments when it's all exciting and new and the potential is untapped...

I also enjoy the lack of GT3 cars...

AC is already filled to the brim with unauthorized resells of Turn10 and Polyphony's content, so...

That was my first thought. Not just the modders but everyone involved. Moreover, elevating modders and better integrating them into the eco-system is rife with risk and issues: even adverts on cars and tracks are covered by IP and modders are already skirting issues with all this even if it is free, let alone if they are charging and laying claim to the IP themselves. Likely their small scale and the absence of eco-system integration (official endorsement from publisher/developer) helps them stay tolerated and under the legal radar. It's very risky to the whole scene IMO (I'm surprised it's all gone as far and as long as it has).

But Kunos has nothing to do with all that.
 
This looks very niche with the Argentinian based content but it is a great way to start.Much better to do something different and do it well than make the same old content and over promise with claims like"most realistic" or "built from the ground up" I wish the game developers well.
 
I... am not really intrigued so far. I see this project so far as a potential modding platform from 2024+ with worse visuals than its role model from 2013+. There was also nothing I have seen that would have made it stand out (bar tracks). I, of course, wish them success and I hope my impressions pre-release are wrong and it's going to something worth picking up. I will check the initial reactions here and if they are positive I will probably pick it up if the EA price is also reasonable.

(I'm still trying to work out how Yuzu even made the money to pay the fine...)

Really looking forward to this release, its great to see some originality and as is said above, no bloody GT3 cars on the promo screens :)

Nice to see them not use Unreal and hopefully their engine will run brilliantly in VR!

From a quick search it looks like Unity HDRP is set up to work with VR. Although it seems it take more optimization than its URD counterpart.
 
The mod stores is an interesting feature and I'm sure the terms of use with modders will discharge REG of any responsability on the illegal use of brands. I assume there will be also free mods, which I've wondered for a long time whether it was possible because integrating mods directly in your game is borderline.But BeamNG's store has been doing it for years and noithing happened. It could still happen but I can imagine how bad a car manufacturer would look if it tried to sue BeamNG ; the worst communication move ever. Modders selling conte.t with real car designs without the brand, like RSS does, is legally complicated as it brings the question of the loss of revenue and market value of the original product for the car manufacturer, which is most probably why this practice is tolerated (but still, a modder has to be careful about trademarks on some.specific parts of the car he wants to copy, which are much better protected, because brand related). So I am not worry about that aspect.

What worries me is that it is another hotlap game at release in a market where many customers are bored by such releases. I would not count on a highly successful early access in REG's place, I hope the team is aware of the long journey ahead. I am highly interested in this project but for sure won't get in the train of this early access.

What would be really interesting from Overtake iwould be a proper review of all the mods developped and sold by REG, to get an idea of the quality of its previious works. There's a positively obscure simracing community around these Argentian series with several dedicated modding teams (APVS, REG....) selling content, some absolutely good looking cars with great engine sounds, and there is almost no reviews of them. There is even still this old game based on rfactor1, still receiving updates for the new seasons, Turismo Carretera Simulador. Would be great to know more about these sims.and category. And it could generate some hype around this new game.
