Round 4 of the 2024 Formula One season takes place in Shanghai, China. This is the first time the championship has raced in China since the 2019 event. Here's what to look out for over the weekend.

When the COVID pandemic hit in 2020, China shut its borders to F1. It has taken until the spring of 2024 to get the championship back racing in the country.

This season, the sprint format comes into effect in Shanghai. Qualifying for the sprint event is now on Friday afternoon and the sprint race - a shorter race about one-third the distance of a Grand Prix - runs on Saturday morning, at 05:00 CEST (11:00 local in Shanghai, 03:00 UTC).

This is followed by qualifying for the Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon before the main race as normal on Sunday.

Lewis Hamilton Aims to Emulate Fernando Alonso

With the seismic breaking news of Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari announced back in February, the whole world of Formula One wants to know how long Hamilton will stick around at the prancing horse. In an interview with the BBC, Hamilton was quoted on saying he wants to emulate Fernando Alonso and continue to race, 'well into his forties'.

Alonso's Aston Martin deal will keep him in his current seat until at least 2026, past his 45th birthday. Hamilton's deal with Ferrari is at least a two-year commitment. Could we see Ferrari's first driver's world championship since Kimi Raikkonen's triumph in 2007?

Stroll Continues To Struggle At Aston Martin

Alonso has come forward and detailed how he has been able to adapt to the AMR24 a lot better than Lance Stroll has been able to.

A week after the announcement that Alonso will continue to race with Aston for at least the next two years, he denies claims of the team building the car entirely around him. Stroll has been praised in the past for his feedback on how the car can be improved, but clearly, those changes either are not being implemented or are not working at all for the young Canadian as he continues his podiumless drought.

Talking to Motorsport.com
Alonso: “We are both (Stroll and himself) trying to help the team as much as we can and I think the direction that we develop the car and finalise the set-ups on a weekend is exactly the same.

“So, we arrive at the same conclusions, maybe differently, and I think those two different styles are just a good thing for the team.”

At least WSB was wildly entertaining. I won't post spoilers but that race was a very unexpected result unlike F1.

Boy, isn't F1 the most exciting thing on the planet !?

I mean, one driver totally bottling the first turn, one former world champion defending like a 3 year old hockey goalie, another former world champion losing multiple places in just one corner, an American that has the driving talent of the Keystone Kops and a race so close that the current world champion barely eeked out a 12 second win after starting in 4th place.

GIVE US MORE :whistling::whistling:
Well, it sounds like you were truly enthralled, Liberty Media will be happy.

Great last half of the race... yeah, I overslept and started watching on lap 28!
But the rest was great, nice to see Lando up there, and a Haas in the hands of Nico Hulkenberg* getting into the points once again, good for Joe (Zhou) to be having battles in front of the home crowd.
Max imperious as ever, and Red Bull solid job

*Edit 'named Nico' I was still asleep!

Stroll showed once again that he's a waste of space. He won't even acknowledge that the crash with Ricciardo was his fault.

Is Lawrence the sole owner of the Aston team? Because if he is not, the other owners should tell him that it's time to put the interests of the team first and get a real driver.

Yes, good race! Congrats to max yet again making the difference because checo couldn't even get p2, and finally great job lando, nice pace for mclaren!!

He drove better with broken hands. :D
Finally did Ricciardo finished ahead of Tsunoda ;)

Was very exciting to see if Perez would get Norris just for the end.
Nice to see Lando on the podium again.
Alonso was making a show all on his own.

Quite a enjoyable race.

I believe the term "snoozefest" is appropriate. F1 is pitiful. If they want to "create entertainment" get rid of half of the grid. About 6 cars are worth a sh!t on any given weekend.

Watch something else.

I only watch the practice, qualifying and race highlights on F1 Youtube channel now. The highlights make the events more entertaining.

I would have thought sim racers would appreciate how these lads put in the times at such a consistant level and realise that alone is mindboggling, racing isn't just about the car in first (that is if you truly appreciate racing and the craft of it).

Although one caveat, I'm starting to think F1 should have success ballast.

maybe because your hero in the silver arrow no longer wins?? Don't watch it anymore, I'll give you this tip. Before you get frustrated. Verstappen will be dominant again this season

Verstappen will be dominant until the reg changes in 2026. Possibly longer if RB nail those changes.

People just need to get used to it. F1 has always had dominance cycles. Schumacher - Vettel - Hamilton - Verstappen alone just in the 21st Century.

Ok child, let me educate you. First, I am not like the majority of the loons who believe you are supposed to like a driver/team to watch the races. I watch RACING. And F1 races are ****, no matter who wins.

I am talking about DRS, "save your tires", "can't pass on this track", "can't follow too closely", " win pole, win race", "team orders", "bitchy, whiny drivers", teams that can't improve year after year with million dollar budgets, fake indignation about "modern tracks", and an extended season of bad racing.

F1 is not racing. It is a parade of pseudo technology. Even when half the cars didn't make it to the end, they actually raced. Tell me that the "DRS train" makes it more exciting. The minute they figured out that DRS will make cars line up nose to butt, they should have dumped it. Racing is about best car, best driver, best luck. If you can pass, pass. No gimmicks. Even if it's your teammate.

What good does ERS do? Is that a weak attempt at being "green"? Hell, it is so complicated, it inhibits new teams from joining. Just make an engine regulation and call it a day.

If a driver/team dominates, so be it. But dominate a race, not a parade.

Most of the other motorsport divisions have actual races. Even NASCRASH. You have no idea who is going to win. Pit stops, tire changes, penalties, fueling . Racing.

Make them use every set of tires for a weekend, unless it rains.

Do you go on to the forums of other sports that you despise and tell all why you despise that sport? Just wondering.

That question would be fitting if this was an F1 forum...

It's a sim racing news/mod download site... The forums here get cross pollinated and you'll see that in the variety of tribalistic my sim vs your sim garbage...

Most of Badwheels' points are spot on... F1 is marketed as a reality TV show these days... What happens on track barely matters... DRS has made the passing stale, the narrow regulation sets of the last 25+ years have led to one team getting a jump on the competition and the cost cap has given their competition no chance to catch up until the regs change...

Even though the Hybrids were a step in the right direction at the time, they've now been around for far too long and keeping the ICE is just to placate the oil companies... The 2026 regs are way too late for what they are and should see a shift to Hydrogen or another state of the art technology instead of redundant tech like a gasoline ICE powertrain...

TL : DR = F1 is boring now, the fire on the grass was a better talking point from this race...

I don't despise F1. I despise what F1 has become. I don't despise US Professional basketball, I despise what it has come. I don't despise US pro baseball, I despise what is has become. I don't despise US football, I despise what is has become. I don't despise golf, I despise what it has become.

Let me clarify. I wear the "boomer" tag proudly. I enjoy being that last generation that ate real food, drove real cars, had real jobs and knew we could buy a house and actually pay for it.

So that being said, my observation/participation in sports didn't start in 2000. It goes back a ways. Just I as I am critical of the devolving of sports, I am just as critical of the "deity" status my generation likes to bestow on the sports before now.

The difference is, every sport now has rules that try to "shape the competition". That is a weak attempt to make sure the product is "entertaining". Even to the casual, hasn't a clue person. In the pursuit of "maximum audience", sports have become a joke.

I will not pick on just F1. Let me know if the rules in these sport have improved the sport

1. American Football. Don't touch the quarterback, don't tackle a player by using your weight to bring them down. Grab a receiver is he starts to get away from you.

2. American Professional Basketball. No traveling, palming the ball and blocking shall be called

3. American Professional Baseball. A "shot clock" on pitchers. Designated hitter.

4. Golf. LIV/PGA

5. Professional Cycling. Tour de France teams with only 8 riders

6. Olympics. WADA. China has a reasonable explanation as to why 23 swimmers tested positive for banned substances. ( I had to throw that in there)

7. Tennis. Two handed backhands for everyone. Never go to the net.

I would like the only thing I leave behind is that the younger generation stop accepting this "realty show" BS that sports have become. Demand your rights!!

You are aware that they drivers talk constantly with the pitwall, but it is the director of the broadcasts picking the cherries that fit the narrative for that moment of the race.
By just letting you just hear the selected one liners, but not the whole whole story.
With this they are actually creating a sort of dramatized version of reality.
And we all fall for it.

If you watch closely most teams don't even have enough sets of tires for a whole weekend as it is. Making them use all compounds won't change much.
