The Crew Motorfest trailer - A Spiritual Successor To TDU?

Ubisoft released a trailer for the 3rd entry into the racing franchise The Crew, this one being subtitled Motorfest.

Although no precise release date has been given, it is officially set to release during the year, with the team having announced similar support to what The Crew 2 has benefited from through its whole life.

Moreover, a closed beta is scheduled starting tomorrow (February 1st) - labelled as an "insider program", but everyone can register for it. The program will go through 4 phases, the first one being open to 2.000 PC players, while the beta will open to more and more people in the following phases. The game is set to release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series S/X and Amazon Luna. The program is explained in further details in the first episode in a series of video, named Behind The Wheel.

Recommended PC equipment for 1080p 60 fps on medium preset is the following:
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti / AMD Radeon RX 5700
  • Video memory: 8 GB
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Drive space: 30 GB
  • OS: Windows 10 64
Interestingly, the game is set on the island of Oahu in Hawaï, which is the map of Test Drive Unlimited. This confirms a leak found in The Crew 2 files as Project Orlando. Coincidentally, it appears a bunch of developpers working on TCM did work on the original TDU, so the comparison between the two games will inevitably be drawn. Motorfest will also be competing with the official successor of TDU, Solar Crown, which should release either at the end of the year as well or early 2024, and is being directed by Alain Jarniou, the original director for the Test Drive Unlimited games. The leaked image from The Crew seems to indicate that contrarily to TDU, the map won't be 1:1 scale, making it very possible that both Ubisoft's Oahu and Kylotonn's Hong Kong Island could end up being of similar size.

The trailer itself shows us a modified Ford Bronco, a Shelby Cobra, and two Lamborghinis, an Urus and a Sian Roadster, noticeably avoiding any other form of motor vehicle - although the official website talks about vehicles and motorsports in general without specifically restricting the scope to cars only, so it is unclear at this stage if planes and boats will be featured again.

Crew Motorfest has no chance against TDU3, simply because of the physics of the cars.
It is simply not interesting to ride on Crew2 refrigerators, anywhere.
No chance.

It would be interesting to know where this piece of info comes from.

I have better expectations about the TDU new game in terms of fun and driving experience, but I hope Kylotonn is going to polish the game instead of relying on the TDU hype.
1) This info I got from a friend who works in the industry (for another company though). Didn't bother checking as he's reliable.

2) I do expect more from TDU:SC as well to be fair, but still, although I haven't been into The Crew 2 much myself, you can only recognize the great support the game received and Motorfest looks good so far. I think the chances it's at least decent are pretty good, and it should incentivise Kylotonn to release a polished product. I just hope it won't divide the playerbase too much.

Looks cool but how on earth can it be coming out on Xbox One and still recommend an RX5700XT for 60fps? At 1080p? Sounds like an optimization disaster is incoming, and knowing Ubisoft it's certainly not unlikely.

No, it's just another Forza Horizon clone, with toyish physics and made by Ubisoft, that today is just a generic open world generator, with that disgusting playground philosophy.

Not that TDU were an example of realism or even of how good a gameplay can be, but that game, at least, had a soul.

I spent a fair few hours in the first TDU, it had its issues but over I thought it was a great game.

Purchased TDU2 and I don't think I ever got it to run due to some complicated activation issues.

Got a free copy of The Crew 2, I believe I uninstalled it after 20 minutes. The driving model, even for an arcade game was 20 years out of date.

Indeed, both TC1 and TC2 has received long following by the developpers. Without any doubt it will be the same with this new game. As soon as you are in the target there probably won't any reason not to enjoy it.

On the contrary, considering the lack of support of Kylotonn's previous games, TDUSC may be not as polished with never fixed issues. But this is another type of game, potentially more popular than the WRC franchise, considering the hype around TDU, let's hope Nacon gave enough budget to such an ambitious game. Not sure this editor already has been involved in such a project (the hype is really high this time).

Super excited about this. No I am not on drugs.

TDU1 was a bit before my time - launch title on the 360 and I didn't pick mine up until about 2007. In hindsight I feel silly for not picking it up as supposedly it was the better game.
You really missed out. The best feature of TDU1 is its unlockable "Hardcore physics" mode, which with assists off makes it the closest thing there is to GT meets FH. Then on the PC side theres the active online server, and modding community...

Until and unless they manage to support direct drive wheels, this game is a hard pass. I will never go back to driving on a controller.

This article deserve some lines. The original Test Drive Unlimited was a masterpiece for it's time when released in 2006? . It was a time when developers took their time to work all the details, therefore the finished product was of high quality. No porting on those days, so the okay versions from consoles looked different and with limited content in comparison to PC. However TDU was a benchmark for graphics alongside DOOM 3 and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. The physics were astonishing in normal mode but the game and experience really came alive when reaching hardcore mode and unlocking the OAHU Raceway. Atari and Eden Games really re-invented the wheel in the genre so when you were tired of racing just teleported to your expensive or modest real states and get your favorite wheels and roam with buddies. Some couples met there and eventually got married although you might not believe it but it's true. Some of my friends later worked on the Paradise Project when Atari went bankrupt, and the servers were shutdown. I had a buddy from Germany being a DJ worked the kinks on the sound and different mods. I kept my profile for many years till eventually I lost it so If I would join today will be with a crack and beginning from scratch. I remember we painted the cars and then sold them in the market, omg good time. Another great feature the game had was the real value on cars as in real life and real performance when comparing the small telemetry in the game, set- up was impossible and with reason since Atari had licenses limitations from the real car makers, Ferrari for example is picky on colors. We thru the years found a way to painted custom colors to impossible cars. The physics weren't perfect , but the way you feel about roaming was the difference, driving nirvana. The Super Car market was exploding in the real world. In England for example Top Gear was the show number 1 in the world, so the timing couldn't be more perfect. Then later when TDU2 was released was a far cry from old TDU , crap basically. Although tons of people in the original studios still worked in that game, it felt like a bad toy in every sense, don't forget Atari was going bankrupt , the money wasn't there anymore. Today the concept has been copied with more or less success. However they're not re-inventing the wheel as TDU did. It doesn't matter if the original producers are still behind this Crew whatever the name is, the fact that gamers are developing their driving physics models was maybe acceptable in 2006 and not in 2023 . I am super glad that Kyloton pushed the next Test Drive Unlimited game even further for a proper release, anything less than perfect is not acceptable anymore. It would be sick if some modder in AC could give us the Oahu island or at least the Oahu Raceway. PS If some of my old fellas in TDU read this, Old Enzoferrari668 says HI!!!

Wow they look amazing, personally I don’t have any more time in my hands for anything other than Gran Turismo but this will be one to buy for the kids for sure

Succesor or not is a BIG step back of the crew series, was great to have a kind of usa map and someones were monitoring if they will improve it for the next game, and boom! , thats what we get a toyful forza horizon nonsense competitor?....

Come on guys is like opening a store infront of waltmart, FH5 has many fans i dont know what they are gonna offer to captivate them, lol,

GL Ubichof!
