505 Games Offers First Look at Assetto Corsa on Mobile

A Twitch livestream on Friday offered Assetto Corsa fans their first chance to see the mobile version of the racing sim.

PocketGamerLive on Twitch streamed a sneak peek at the upcoming mobile edition of Assetto Corsa. Hosts James Gilmour and Sophia Aubrey Drake commentated over a live feed of an Alfa Romeo Mito QV lapping Brands Hatch in the mobile game.

There were few if any conclusions to draw about Assetto Corsa’s mobile edition from the stream, since the hosts didn’t explore content or game modes in depth, but James did note the relative difficulty of lapping Brands Hatch compared to other mobile racing titles. The screen share from the phone showed touch inputs for the game, including brake and accelerator, plus camera cycling and a look backward. A racing line was utilized for the demonstration, with acceleration and braking points shown as green and red in the racing line, respectively.

Most of us first heard about this upcoming mobile title in late May of this year, but the news was largely overshadowed by the news of Assetto Corsa 2.

Mobile and tablet games currently account for nearly half of the worldwide gaming market, which has led many game developers to build mobile versions of existing games or game series. Project CARS, Need for Speed and Forza are among the racing franchises currently represented on mobile. Even though the control options may be limited, more representation from the racing sim world in mobile gaming is an exciting prospect for sim racers on the go. Bluetooth controllers are supported on most modern mobile phones, so we can hope that Assetto Corsa will offer support for popular controllers.

Few details were given during the stream, but a subsequent tweet from Assetto Corsa let us know that more news from the AC world will come to us on August 27th.

As long as 505 leave Kunos free to do what they do it's all good.

I see the AI is still making a mess in T1. Graphics need some more development, as some other not, even that recent racing titles looks way better.

There is mobile 'sim' called Assoluto that I have actually spent a fair amount of time playing when I worked my previous job. I was on the road a lot and grew fond of it. It was neat playing something semi-realistic on the road when I felt that itch. If this is a better version I'm all for it. It might be some fun. You can't always have your rig with you.

Also if this means they will have even more funds for AC2 that is great. I think it's easy to forget sim racing is still niche and development is expensive.

Edit: Thought I might add this; for anyone in a similar situation, on the road, having a mobile sim with more real world tracks would be nice. Assoluto only had the Nords, Ebisu and Tsukuba I think. Otherwise it's all fantasy.
Agreed, Rush Rally 3 and Grid Autosport on mobile are also both solid titles.

The mobile games market is massive and afaik the biggest of them all so its a clever idea and nothing wrong about it that even an AC gets released on mobile. Everyone that means its a waste of time, wtf is wrong with kunos and nonsens like this has no idea what they are talking about...

And soon there will be an mobile game from Motorsport Games with rF2 bits and UE4 stuff too... :p

And also maybe:

Seriously, never ever felt like I wanted to sim-race on my phone/tablet. Simracing is the kind of thing where you either sit down and do it properly or you don't do it at all. There's very little point in having sim-like physics when you are trying to use gyro on a small glowing rectangle.

I guess, except for James, everything in that interview was weird lol...
Trying to stabilish AC brand in this way can be dangerous imo. It didn't help PCARS which had way more investment. Hope it works well for 505.

This is a great way to fund their ongoing AC2 effort. Steal from the mobile racers to feed the sim racers.

Hm, and if they make more money with this the can stop making sims altogether. No, I don't even want to know if it's a good little game, just don't mix sims with this. Find your frigging game name and don't milk Assetto Corsa for this.

i just want a release of AC2, i dont care about graphics, i just want AC with better physics simulation. Graphic wise leave it to modders :p

I have played a lot of these mobile games, but I wouldn’t call them “sim racing.” Even the best of them (probably Rush Rally imho) have to compromise: either you use the gyro for steering and binary screen presses for brakes and accelerator, or you use a wireless controller. In the first case, you need assists to compensate for the absurd max brak/max throttle effect of binary controls. In the second case, well, you’re stuck with the limitations of the controller, if you can get it to work. I tried to get Grid Autosport to recognize an Xbox controller, but even Codemasters tech support could not make it work, and eventually stopped responding to my emails.

Even worse is the predatory nature of most mobile games, which are designed around “monetization” so that the games exist only to get you to spend money on endless and expensive in-app purchases. Designing a good game is their lowest priority. They waste your data bandwidth dazzling you with useless graphics, and waste your time with what I call “stupid pet tricks” to try and earn a number of in-game currencies that ultimately just annoy you half to death.

Do not expect AC Mobile to be anything like the PC version. Mobile gaming will just never grow up to be that good.

What is it with all these timing based racers that give you little to no control over the steering or shifting gears...? Or in the case of Project Cars Go, forced auto-accelerate...! Why? Game developers that make racing games for mobile that are based on console and PC counterparts of well-known sim racing or simcade racing titles should try to keep the essence of the console and PC based games without removing the very thing that makes the sim/simcade racing genre what it is... Actually being able to control the car fully, through steering, acceleration, braking, and shifting gears (Manual transmission should be optional, but still there for people who like an extra challenge)

How many phones do I need to stick into a VR headset to play this? Probably 2, can I steer with turning my head? How good will the sync be between the two phones for each eye?
