The first race of the season at Albert Park was a very interesting one. The unpredictable Honk Racing came good in the hands of Thomas Hackel, who won the race just ahead of the Minardi, yes you heard right, Minardi, of Mike Bell, with Ondrej Kapal of Ferrari rounding off the podium. Paul Stoddart fought back the tears as his man stood next to Thomas on the podium. As for the second Honk Racing, wheelspin off the start ruined a good race for Matthew Gutteridge, who became gridlocked in the huge struggle for fourth place, eventually coming out the worst in 7th. A good showing also from Jordan, Daniel Higgins and Brian Clancy managing 4th and 8th respectivly, Clancy the subject of an ongoing row over a mysterious woman who distracted Brian, costing him a potential podium. Ondrej Kapal told the press he was happy with the performance of his car, and congratulated Hackel and Bell on a "magnificant race".
One of the big surprises of this race was the return of Peter Duivilaar, revealed to the press only as he stepeed out of the car, having finished 9th, in his car that hasn't been tested. Duivilaar told BBC SPORT "It's good to be back in the car, its not fast, but its something to work on for sure.
Certainly a big talking point is the issue involving Brian Clancy and his mysterious pit babe. One marshall said "I didn't see anything, I'm off to put another shrimp on the barbie!" Fine words from one of the worlds top Australian marhalls P)
For this reporter, the race weekend was summed up by an FIA employee telling Omer Saidstone that Minardi were in the lead of the constructors, to which Mr Saidstone said "LOL, wouldn't it be funny if that happened!"
