Loss of wheel connection when exiting race

I have had this problem for a long time now and its stopping me from playing the game.
Everytime I exit a race my controls 'reset' and show no devices connected in the menu, even though my wheel is working fine. To remedy this I have to exit game, go to wheel settings and click default settings then boot the game again.
Any ideas on fixes? It is ruining the enjoyment of this game for me.
