Kubica to Drive Formula One Car Again

@Lazarou
He performed a 115 laps test, which is a great accomplishment already.
If he can keep a fast pace without suffering too much the G-Forces and the fatigue on his right arm, for sure he could try becoming a test driver for an F1 team and then maybe, he could aim a seat for the race weekend. He had a bright future ahead when he was a F1 driver. For sure he has the speed in his blood. Forza Robert!

No, he have some limitations in the range of motion of his injured arm, but still can use it to drive

I hope to see him fully recovered some day

Seriusly? Look at the muscles of his arm. Do you think it does any strength on the steering wheel?

Not sure what to make of the test, positive and negative at the same time.

Robert Kubica says his first run in a Formula 1 car in six years left him with mixed feelings, as he could see what he had lost.
The Pole drove a Renault-powered Lotus E20 car painted in Renault colours at the Valencia circuit on Tuesday, completing 115 laps as he conducted several evaluations with different fuel loads.

Kubica had not driven F1 machinery since his career was interrupted by a rallying crash that caused severe damage to his right hand in 2011.

The 32-year-old admitted the test was an emotional moment for him and, although he was proud of his work, he conceded the run showed what he had lost during his time away from the sport.

"For me, it has been an important day from an emotional point of view," said Kubica. "It has been a long time away from the paddock and I have been through difficult periods, I kept working hard and a few years ago I felt it was impossible.

"I have mixed feelings, I am proud with what I achieved today, but also it shows what I have lost.

"I don't know what the future will bring, but I know one thing, after working for more than one year to prepare for this, I ran with good pace and consistent in difficult conditions.

"It is not easy after six years, but I knew I could do the job and I can be satisfied. I appreciate the opportunity. Renault gave me my first F1 test in 2005, so I appreciate another test this time around."

Renault's sporting director Alan Permane said that Kubica's character had changed since he raced for the team in 2010, but said the feedback from the Pole was like "turning back the clock".

Permane labelled Kubica's performance as "great"·.

"It was good to see Robert back in a Formula 1 car. It was a smooth day," he added. "We tried to condense a grand prix weekend into one day, which was interesting for him.

"Robert has changed a little, he is more mellow and he wasn't as pushy when asking for every detail about the set-up of the car! His comments and feedback, however, were like turning the clock back for all of us.

"It is a tricky thing to jump into an F1 car after six years and it was a great performance from him."

Permane insisted, however, that the outing was just a one-off for Kubica.

"This was a one-off event for Robert," he said. "His time with Renault was cut short so abruptly and we perceived such a nice future with him.

"The team was in Valencia testing with Sergey Sirotkin, so it was the perfect opportunity to offer Robert a day in the car and contribute in our way to his recovery."

I am probably hoping for too much to see him back, tearing it up round Monaco etc in a Renault 2017/2018 car :(

I wonder why they chose the 2011 car instead of 2014 or above wouldn't it make more sense to get accustomed to the new turbo / harvesting era?

It was 2012 car,

The reasons:

(1) Renault runs this car a show car, so they have all spare parts and crew procedures ready as this car is a work horse still.

(2) running hybrid PU car rather than 'simple' V8 would be much more complicated technically and much more expensive, not even coonsidering the risk of wasting a day with 1h on track and 7 hours in garage, considering the Renault hybrid PU reliability.

They wanted to give him maximum track time, so they run the specs that is proven and reliable.

Yeah but what does Sergey Sirotkin get out of it by testing old cars???

Doesn't FIA also restrict the amount of testing you can do with the current era cars?

And, perhaps more importantly: Despite the test car not being current spec, it's still the car he's most familiar with so he could evaluate his own performance without having to take into account other conditions.

Wow, what an unnecessary comment...

Well there are of pseudo F1 fans in Poland yes, but obviously not in this forum.

Yes the guy over there is an idiot and it can be judged from his other comments, not even worth translating...

Lastly you`re very wrong about instant like in Poland, at every news-portal, when they write something about Kubica, you`ll see a lot of Polish people commenting the kind of " another car? oh he didn`t crash the one like this yet?" and so on, a lot of negative comments, so I was actually positively surprised to see that he has some support from abroad on forums like this one.
