Russian Bears Motorsport have entered the 2008 FIA World Touring Car Championship.
The Russian outfit will run two LADA 110 2.0 cars from the third race meeting of the season that will take place in Valencia on May 18th. The procedure to homologate the Russian car with the FIA is currently underway.
The team, who took part in last year's FIA WTCC events at Zandvoort and Valencia with three BMW 320i cars, have already named their drivers, the 43-year old Russian Viktor Shapovalov, who drove for LADA in the Russian Touring Car Championship, and the 31-year old Dutchman Jaap van Lagen, champion of the 2006 Eurocup Renault Mégane Trophy.
"We are an independent team, however we have received from LADA the bodyshells with the roll-cages, some necessary spare parts and technical support. Furthermore LADA technicians are supporting us with the documents needed for the homologation," team manager Maxim Maksimenko explained.
During the season the team will be based in their Dutch workshop at Franeker and are expected to make their maiden appearance at the WTCC official test session in Valencia, on April 15th and 16th.

CURITIBA HOSTS WTCC OPENING ROUND

The start of the 2008 FIA World Touring Car Championship is just a few days away.

The series' fourth season will get underway next week at the Autódromo Internacional de Curitiba, Brazil.
This is the third time the 3.7 km circuit hosts the WTCC. The championship visited Curitiba for the first time in July 2006; a record crowd of 34,000 attended two thrilling races that were won by Jordi Gené (SEAT León) – after an exciting fight with local hero Augusto Farfus (Alfa Romeo) – and Andy Priaulx (BMW 320si).
From last year the Brazilian event was moved to March and given the honour to open the season. The BMW men dominated the 2007 edition, with BMW Team Germany fellow drivers Jörg Müller and Augusto Farfus sharing victories while Priaulx obtained two second places. The three BMW drivers left Brazil as co-leaders of the championship having scored 16 points apiece.
The attendance of the Brazilian fans was even larger than in 2006, with 45,000 spectators gathering at the track during the weekend.

Further details revealed on the Lada 110

What has almost seemed like a joke since the first rumours about it in 2006 now seems to become true - Lada on the grid of the World Touring Car Championship. While the rumours and announcements in 2006 indicated a factory entry, the entry for 2008 is a private entry by the Russian team Bears Motorsport. TouringCarTimes have received information regarding the cars that will be run.

The Lada 110 was developed in 2006 by M-Tec Motorsport by the order of Lada. M-Tech has developed several prototypes for different manufacturers before. Among other cars M-Tech produced the Lada 2111 in rally S1600 specification.

The reason for the sudden halt of the WTCC project in 2006 was due to lack of funds from Lada to the project and that they found no main sponsor. Three cars were produced, one still remains with Lada while the other two were bought by Bears Motorsport.

According to our sources Lada have approved the homologation for the car which is required for the team to compete in the WTCC.

The engine of the Lada 110 is a two litre engine from Opel. The engine was originally developed for Formula 3 and has been tuned by the renowned Spiess Motorsport. The gearbox is made by Hewland with a clutch from Sachs.

No Honda for James Thompson

N-Technology to miss WTCC-premiere
The World Touring Car Championship season of 2008 starts this weekend in Brazil. There will be no N-Technology Honda Accord on the grid for James Thompson. The team has instead announced that the car will be ready for the second race in Mexico on April 5-6th.

The team has switched from Alfa Romeo to Honda for this season, something that was announced only little over a month ago.

James Thompson will drive their sole car during the WTCC 2008. The team has begun testing, the first run was done in Spain at the beginning of February.
