I Finally Bought F1 Manager 2022, Started it And Then 4 Hours Flew Past

F1manager2022_rd_head.jpeg
I am a fan of one of the smallest niches in gaming. Motorsport management simulations are what I want to play. If you read my former article on the matter, you'd already know that. But I hesitated with F1 Manager 2022. However, now I've got it and I won't let go of it anytime soon.

It has been quite some time since a game bound me to my seat like F1 Manager 2022 managed to just yesterday evening. And here's the worst thing:

I'm not even a fan of F1.

That's right. Welcome to my outing as someone who doesn't watch F1 amongst a group of racing fans. Please throw small stones only.

So that is the fact that got me to wait. Wait, until some sale would drop the price on Steam. And with a 20% discount, the 10th of October became the day I had hoped for for years.

I finally found my new favourite time waster.

And it came bundled with an experience I hadn't cared for at all.

A dangerous combination, I know. However, somehow the managerial aspect of F1 Manager 2022 just gets to me. It connects to me on a level I didn't anticipate, even though a new top motorsports management game had been on the top of my wishlist for years.

It had been on my wishlist for so long, I actually thought about making one such game myself!

So yeah, don't ask me for a review because it'd break the scales of RD's review system. You can't give 10 Stars when only 5 are available.

But enough about tooting F1 Manager 2022's horn. I'm here on a mission.

Calling on Video Game Developers: Jump on the Train!

Dear Video Game Developers,

I hope that you see it the same as I do. This niche has potential. Motorsports Management Simulation is a valid genre! And I have an idea to improve on it:

More. More. More!

More classes, more drivers, more vehicles. It doesn't need to be licensed. It doesn't even need to look realistic! All we need is a good UI System and a good AI and we're golden!

So please, game dev that likes motorsport and doesn't have a project right now: Go for it! Develop that game! Everyone should now know that at least I would be thankful.

And I know it wouldn't be the easiest of tasks, but let's have faith together!

Thank you for your work!

Signed,
Julian Strasser

As you might be able to tell, I am not a developer of video games (yet) so am not aware of how much work actually goes into making this piece of entertainment software.

I am just a man with a dream. And that dream will (for now) be fulfilled by F1 Manager 2022.

What I am now interested in is your opinion on the motorsport management niche:
  • Is there a future in this niche?
  • After F1 Manager, is there more to come?
  • Would you like to see more motorsport management games on the market?

Heh. While I feel my 2.75 stars review on RD, in hindsight is way to high.

F1 Manager 22 is filled with issues, bugs, non-simulation, next to nothing managerial value.
I still don't get why praising something that's arguably worse than the genre had over 20 years ago is a thing. Sorry.

I know it's far from perfect, but that's what scares me about the niche.

There's so much potential to be have a forever captivating game somewhere.

Oh, I know the "one more game" from Football Manager, or "one more race" from Motorsport Manager. This game had me go "ugh. I need to finish a season to write the review for RD, how long time does it take". Just to have an underwhelming season change.

Ugh. For the one game I've been looking forward to for 20+ years, I am far from reaching 100 hours in it. :(

I also have MM, but when I saw the trailer for this I couldn't wait for it to come out.... It is spectacular

Is RD starting a Crossfire or Point-Counterpoint section where its own contributors provide widely-diverging reviews? Or was this post meant for the forum section?

i ve more then 140 hours on this game. So funny. So beautiful to see and play the races. The big down of this game: it had maybe the worst community of gamers in the world. Not as much toxic as the star wars community, but not far from that

personally i am glad to see it, means legit opinions are involved, not combed for resale opinions.

my old dad taught me a valuable lesson in life..

"opinions are like a$$holes.. everyone has one.."

I don't know if I would like this game... The graphics look cool, but I would like to drive the cars myself. Can Assetto Corsa have the graphics of this game, or even better?

To encourage participation, teachers often tell their younger students that "There's no such thing as a dumb question." While such advice may be helpful in welcoming various viewpoints, some questions are obviously better or more insightful than others, in that they tend to lead to better answers. For my part, I would have preferred in the case of the review(s) in question that the RD staff would have shared their opinions and thrashed their ideas between themselves and presented a more unified judgement of its merits and drawbacks (initial and follow-up) a la Car and Driver or Road & Track.

A game-review tends to be what one person feels about a game. I think the RD podcast is more suited to ideas being shared etc.

I know that I personally would not have my name on a review or opinion-article if I can't back what's being written 100%.

I actually like the clean version of that quote better, because it allows you to add a funny retort...

"Opinions are like noses, everyone has one... and sometimes I just want to punch someone in the opinion."

Anyway F1M still has Denuvo, 0/10 just buy MM instead.

Imagine the game as it is with codemaster and ea logo instead of frontiers? I think we wouldn't have these so positive and kind review but only complains also for cars model, animation and other things that here are never mentioned

I would have appreciated an overview of the experience. I have to confess I am negatively predisposed toward "managerial" games, but you never know. I am more of a driver. More of a "doer" if you will. When I watch sports I always wonder how I'd measure up (and in motorsports the answer is... poorly).
I don't find the idea of managing a F1 team attractive, maybe because I spent a lifetime in management and the concept feels a lot like work.
However, I still wonder what the mechanics of the game are like. Someone commented "I'd like to drive the car", which tells me that's not a thing. A screenshot shows a car on track, so someone races in game.
One aspect I'd find interesting is managing the team during a RACE (AS OPPOSED TO HIRING DRIVERS, BUDGETS, ETC.) IS THAT A THING?
I couldn't be worse than Ferrari.
(Sorry about the caps. Stupid keyboard... I am not yelling, I swear)

Why do people think that F1 is still popular among racing fans? It's not. Nobody's going to throw stones at you for saying that you don't watch F1, because nobody does.
Nobody likes F1 anymore.Well, except from the fanatics. Same people who watch soccer even though there's not a single legitimate match anymore because of fully legalized LIVE betting.
And since i'm not even a little bit interested in F1, i wish we could get a similar manager for other, better racing categories, like MotoGP and SBK, or even WRC and GT racing. Endurance racing manager would be awesome.

I don't know in what kind of bubble you live in but F1 is the only racing series that is watched by millions and can be classified as popular globally.
Just an example - go into some simracing related twitch channel or similar after some race weekend - NO ONE is discussing WRC or MotoGP there.

Quick honest review for those interested....After sinking 220 hours into MM, I passed about 50 hours in this game over the span of a week and a half, while sitting home due to an injury. Anyway, while the 1x, 2x track side graphics look great, from a manager perspective, this game lacks alot. It wastes so much time hiding information in different screens, too many unnecessary mouse clicks, tire deg is broken, AI is wonky, SCs are a super easy way to jump the pack on strat changes, wet races are a joke with water on the track and the sharp drop off at designated points.

I just started season 4 with Mclaren and am done with the game, nothing really gives a feeling of satisfaction. Lots of wasted potential, and I doubt the devs are going to make

I bought a management sim once, and after sticking 8 hours into it I dragged myself away, checked my watch and realised that only 3 minutes had passed.
