F-Reiza in Automobilista 2: A Pleasant Surprise

Automobilista 2 F-Reiza F1 2012 576p.jpg
It is no secret that open-wheel cars are one of the strong suits of Automobilista 2. One that might get overlooked but is certainly worth trying is the F-Reiza – although it took a while to realize this.

Formula One cars have seen countless transformations in the looks department over the years. Compare a mid-60s vehicle to one of the mid-70s for one of the most obvious examples – development never stops in the World Championship.

Weird Wings

When the V8 era started in 2006, the cars continued to look the way they did before. More complicated wings and winglets started to appear in the following years, and the FIA decided to put an end to this. The result: 2009’s class of cars with simplified aero and extremely weird wing proportions. While the front wings that got extended to match the cars’ width looked good to me, the narrow, tall rear wings were extremely off-putting. When the cars got longer and nose designs just plain obscene, I was out entirely.

The 2007 and 2008 classes of F1 cars were the final ones that looked properly good, at least according in the author’s extremely objective opinion.

I am not going to sugarcoat it: The era from 2009 to 2016 is one of my least favorite in F1. The ever-tightening rules, somewhat soulless circuits with enormous run-offs and tires that could not be pushed for more than a few laps made sure I fell out of love with the sport that I grew up with on a near-religious level. Hence, it should come as no surprise that I have not really given the F-Reiza cars in AMS2 a closer look.

Random Realization

Until recently. In a fun event with friends, we tried several random classes, and the F-Reiza was one of them. Immediately after leaving the pits at Catalunya, that feeling of “wait a minute, I missed out” set in. For one, the sound is great – that should come as no surprise. That era’s V8 engines were no V10s, but produced a great noise nonetheless. Furthermore, the upshifts sounding like gunshots certainly helped.

Additionally, and most importantly, the driving experience is sublime. The car is direct and allows drivers to push quite a lot, but does not have near-infinite grip. This means that sideways action at corner exits is not out of the question, which makes for an exciting ride. Also, their Force Feedback communicates everything that is happening extremely well.

F-Reiza 2012 Skin Pack

With car itself being based on 2011’s Red Bull RB7, no skin pack of that year is available just yet. However, RaceDepartment has a a 2012 set of liveries for sim racers to enjoy. And even though I had checked out of watching F1 at the time, I did not miss the fact that the 2012 season was one of the most exciting in recent history. While the cars are still not aesthetically pleasing in my eyes, real liveries help their looks. Three words: McLaren chrome livery. Need I say more?

2012 saw the title battle go down to the wire. Fernando Alonso in a compartively uncompetitive Ferrari took on the dominant Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel and almost took the championship. After a first-lap collision in the final round at Interlagos, the Spaniard looked like the World Champion already – however, Vettel had made up just enough places to win the title by three points in the end.

For those who want to recreate the season, eight accurate tracks are already in AMS2, plus Catalunya, which is mostly accurate. Of course, you are also free to use any other circuits you might see fit. The vast amount of choice in the sim ensures plenty of good options.

More V8 Era Cars in AMS2?

Sure, this new realization will not exactly elevate that era of F1 in my book. However, it does make me appreciate the cars just that bit more. The sound of the new turbo era since 2016 makes it painfully obvious that Formula One is missing one of its crucial elements of fascination, at least to me. And there is no way around the fact that this era was the last of properly earth-shaking F1 cars.

What would be even better is another car covering the early V8 era from 2006 to 2008 in Automobilista 2. Currently, there is a gap from 2001 to 2011 – see the AMS2 F1 Season Guide on RaceDepartment for all included Formula One seasons.

i'm glad Yannick, if you're enjoying the 2012 F1 skinpack. A better version of it will come with suits, gloves, helmets... and HRT, Marussia car liveries.
Back to topic, i would love to have that F-V8 series in AMS2. We could totally imagine a generic car based on the BMW F1.07 chassis. And because of the McLaren license, we would get the famous chrome MP4-22 from 2007. But that's just a dream.

There’s criticism and then there’s what trolls do, try and insert baseless arguments every chance they get, for a reaction.
it's easy to say trolling for critics, it's obviously what we have for AMS2 moderation, and not the same moderation for rF2 or EA/Codemasters....this site is no more what it has been.

edit : this site reputation is no more what it has been, the sponsors and partenership have removed the impartiality, it's so obvious

Thanks for putting the F-Reiza in the spotlight; I'm a huge fan of the 2013(-ish) cars and appreciate that Reiza has put one in the base game. That being said...
I think that from a pure driving perspective, the Formula RSS 2013 for Assetto Corsa beats the F-Reiza by a large margin: It's more direct in terms of FFB, it's snappy, and just overall more demanding, whereas the F-Reiza still suffers from AMS2's typical massive slip angle and excessive front grip.
According to Reiza's forums, Reiza is well aware of these issues and is fixing them car-by-car - so I can't wait to try the next update. :)
Yes, Renato explained in the beta side of things that they have found new improvements on the tyres, and they are going through another iterative process. Everything I have tested so far in the Beta side of things that has been revised, drives better than the Public version. This process also affects AI calibration, so it may take a while until all of this will be released to the main version. But then, if you like AMS2, you should be well used by now to be patient :)

Come on, dude, time to take off this tinfoil hat. I think here is no sim on RD which is preferred. It's just guys like you who constantly bash other sims which they don't use/like for whatever reasons. Just leaves a taste of trolling tbh.

Easy answer, you have a report button, so feel free to use it.
I've intervened in rF2 threads often but EA business practices are both known and notorious throughout the gaming world so it's understandable that there's a degree of scepticism when they are involved in a beloved franchise such as the Dirt series or F1.
Hopefully time will prove the doubters wrong.
Finally, your constant trolling of every AMS2 discussion is just needless provocation. I get you don't like the game and you're entitled to your opinion but ramming down everyone's throat does you a disservice.

Give him a cuddle and a teddy bear and he will be happy and hopefully leave the thread alone instead of trolling every time there is an "AMS2" tag around

Yup and someone who slags of AMS2 in literally EVERY AMS2 thread and is a fan of EA games is a bit of a joke if I'm honest.

How long has it been since Reiza received a Copyright Infringement claim with Automobilista? The game was even removed from Steam during that time until all F1 related skins were removed. If I remember correctly Racedepartment removed all F1 skin-packs from the download page due to not being in line with their terms of service.

It seems that these terms of service didn't change:
*When creating or uploading free to use mods, car skins, helmets, cars, tracks etc users should seek official permission first from the copyright or trademark holders.
*This website is unofficial and is not associated in any way with the Formula One group of companies. F1, FORMULA ONE, FORMULA 1, FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, GRAND PRIX and related marks are trade marks of Formula One Licensing B.V.

Who thought it was a good idea to put this on the RD frontpage?

Shush. Don't say it too loudly until I've downloaded all the skin packs.

If the skins or mods are not here on racedepartment, the pictures are not a problem at all.

People can do whatever they want for personal use. If i recreate a real skin for myself, i am not commiting any infraction, is when i am distributing without permission that i am. And even that would not fly in most countries, unless you are SELLING them. Which would make said skins being here to download FOR FREE, also not a problem.

The skins in question in AMS weren't even recreations, they just looked too similar to the real ones in how the colours were combined. That's why eg the F-V12 has such weird looking colour combinations today.
