Ever since i became disabled, i had to sell my beloved Beetle. Last year i bought myself a gaming PC as a present, just to recreate certain races from the 80's and onwards, with the accurate liveries on the cars in Assetto Corsa. My experience with PC's are close to zero but downloading and setting up mods and things like CSP and Sol were pretty straightforward.
Then i ran into a standard Beetle mod, downloaded it immediately. Yesterday i accidentally stumbled upon your track, and since that's one of the places i've always wanted to visit, i downloaded and installed it. Took my Beetle for a ride in LA Canyons and i can hardly describe the feeling i got from the virtual experience! It's amazing!
Now for the naughty part; since i also was trying to figure out how to stream with OBS, and if my PC could handle that, i took the first drive live on YouTube in my enthusiasm before i read the "Please note" disclaimer.
So if you would grant me the permission, i'd very much appreciate it. If you want me to take it down, i respect that and will do so (monetization is disabled).
To add another compliment; one of my subscribers, who lives in that area, wrote a great comment on how realistic it all looks and recognised some parts!
I'll go check out the Platinum version and try to figure out how to add some traffic :)
Conclusion: A must have! Download/install it, take your favourite car, put some music on and just drive!

Thanks a lot for your awesome review dude! Sorry you had to sell your Beetle, but it makes me happy to hear my (and Benobro's) work helped you get back in a virtual Beetle for an amazing experience. As a modder, hearing that is about as good as it gets!

Sorry for the delay, the last few years have been.... (expletive)
Stream all you want to, and if you enable monetization, go for it.

Thanks again, and I'm really happy to give you some sense of freedom on the open road. Cheers, and take care man!

After seeing videos online, I felt like this deserved my support. I purchased the Platinum VIP package (and you should, too) but every time I try to launch it in single player, I get the error message: "AC ran into critical error: CANNOT HAVE 0 CARS IN RACE.IN!"

I assume I did something incorrectly, but I can't find anything about this error anywhere. Can anybody help?
Phoenix77
Phoenix77
Thanks, the "CANNOT HAVE 0 CARS IN RACE.IN!" means the main track wasn't installed properly. Either that or you didn't select some AI opponents.
it says TRACK NOT FOUND

Try reading the instructions... and by installing the main track 1st

After I moved to the LA area 20+ years ago, I bought myself a new 2004 Mini Cooper S. This car was heavily modified to run in these very canyons..
You have done an amazing job of capturing the fun of driving through those hills.

I have not been up into this area for years due to high fuel costs and forest fires...

Thank you for letting me go there again..

IT IS FANTASTIC!
Phoenix77
Phoenix77
Thanks Astra, that's great to hear, hope you manage to find a Mini Cooper S car mod to take in the virtual canyons :)
Cheers!
Amazing track!

Only 1 thing, can someone please explain how to set up a 2 way traffic for this. I have platinum version. Thank you in advance!
Phoenix77
Phoenix77
Thanks!

Select Two-Way Traffic Layout, use Trackday mode, select around 10 AI cars (more than this and CM's AI Flood mode gets buggy)... Turn off Fuel Consumption.... Then drive.
i played this a year ago such a nice cruising map but now i downloaded it multiple times but it wont show up in content manager please help

Phoenix77
Thanks, have you followed the instructions? Being sure to install the main track 1st?
Awesome work... I used to ride these these canyons every weekend until I had kids. My favorite piece (in real life) is the AFH, and it's recreated wonderfully here - Love being able to rip these roads from my couch since I rarely have a few hours free for the real thing anymore!
Phoenix77
Phoenix77
Thanks man, really glad you can run AFH, and in a way you couldn't sensibly do in real life. It is also great to hear about the level of re-creation achieved. Cheers!
Just buy the ultimate if you can, this modder is one of the best in the community and the map, oh lord its amazing. I feel like a boss going 170mph near a cliff side knowing in real life i would've died. Hope this inspires others to make even more great free roam maps in the US rather then Europe. Idk if your going to read this but thank you for making my times better your mods and the game literally make me feel at ease. Quick question will you ever make a US interstate map so we can do some highway pulls. Would be sick asf to see a huge junction and highway interlopes. The Japanese one is cool but not fun as I dont like driving on the left.

Thanks man, glad you're loving the Canyons... and really happy to know they've helped make your times better... If you haven't, jump on a server and drive with some of the cool dudes you will find online in the Canyons, I planned LA Canyons with car meets in mind from the very beginning!

US Interstate map?... You never know... I have a few ideas for roads that Need doing. These will depend obviously on available time, and if I can source detailed enough reference data (LiDAR)
Never say never!
Very good track however i am having issues using any of the layouts labelled as 'VIP', whenever i try to load into one of these a crash prompt comes up saying 'CANNOT HAVE 0 CARS IN RACE.INI'. Not sure if i need to pay for these or if they only work in servers or something, I've tried a few things but with no success.
- SHORT VERSION -
This is a must try experience, hands down. Whenever you're new to sim racing or veteran, trackday weekender or street drifter, hardcore sim elitist or plain dreamer. It may even be worth buying AC just for this sole purpose. Quick warning tho, it may prove highly addictive and I'd not recommend this if you are experiencing troubles getting off your rig already, it might get really worse real quick.

- Not so short version -
Well, what hits when you load it up for the first time is the vibe here. Perhaps because its wide. Or beautiful. Or because its actually replicating actual places that do have a strong vibe. Or both all of the above. Then, you go further your ride, and the freedom feeling is growing up (it personally reminded me many road trips big times, blasting through unknown landscapes thousand kms from home). Minutes later you realise it was actually hours spent already. And you cant help but want to have another go. And try that car. Or this another one you forgot about for a long time, and reconnect with it like with an old friend. The scenery might enhance the experience, the layout might makes it more interesting.

It can takes quite a time to realise how detailed the whole thing is (that is, plus considering the size of it) because you are too busy juste experiencing it at first. But when you understand how much quality this is (including that it runs surprisingly smooth even on humble systems, result of tons of work to balance visual quality and performance), it kind of makes sense to learn it was several years of development. That is absolutely mindblowing, specially regarding the fact this is made by just a few people on their free time.

The layout of the main loop is an accurate recreation, according to locals, of roads that are a blissful blend of fast sections and more technical ones. This is a dangerous ride overall, you'll have to drive quite carefully first, like IRL, if you don't want to spend your time getting back to the pits (well, parking area is a more adequate term in that instance). These 42 kms can prove though to master, but are really rewarding in the end, and putting together a complete clean loop is quite a thing. Some sections may take time and practise to remember, but in the end you will feel at home.

All in all, from reasonable spirited driving to endurance racing, road rage through traffic back to casual canyon carving, it got you covered for months (actually, maybe years as this is like going back SOMEWHERE every time you fire it up), this is quite up to your imagination, anyway, the place is perfect for countless scenarios (old school nfs vibes within beautiful graphics and realistic physics, wait, what?)

You may have heard about paid versions etc, well these are mainly awesome side roads addons (that I strongly recommend, though) meant to thank people who supported the project through its development, the 42 km main loop which is the core of it all is FREE and you already have enough with that to keep you really busy for quite a long long time.

There are many beautiful things to say about times spent in this place, but I'll let you write those lines.

I guess we'll never say "thank you" enough for this work of art.

Thanks for the extremely detailed review mate, very much appreciated. You obviously get what this has all been about!

Glad to know you've loved your time in the Canyons :)
I've spent more than 1000km on this track. What else is there to say? Beatiful track for cruising, multiplayer is enjoyable, AI works.
Phoenix77
Phoenix77
Thanks BassGaming, glad you're enjoying it in the best way, online!
Whenever I get the chance to get online, I'm always amazed at the talent of the chilled dudes in the canyons.

I have heard (and seen proof lol) that people have driven in excess of 30,000 'miles' in the canyons. Making me seem like a newb on my own track :D
The best cruising experience in Assetto Corsa! The VIP extras, like the hillclimb are excellent.
Phoenix77
Phoenix77
Thanks Valart, glad you're liking the hillclimbs (I almost didn't put those in)
Cheers hope you have loads of good cruises! :)
I've never reviewed anything here on RaceDepartment, or any other site for that matter. I felt that this map needed a review. I bought the premium off of your website and damn was it worth it. This map makes any car amazing to drive, drift, race, or cruise. The detail, textures, small backroads, turnouts, and views are amazing. I got the paid rain mods and they're tons of fun with this map. The map has the perfect balance of small windy roads, 2-4 lane roads/highways, and even neighborhood roads. I've always wanted to visit California. This satisfies that urge. Even though I don't have my license or permit, I can still drive around California with a Ferrari in Assetto. For anyone that's on the fence about maybe buying the premium bundle, It's 100% worth the money.

Thanks for the awesome review Johnny, and glad you're loving the VIP! Cheers!
One of the top 5 Assetto Corsa tracks period. Top quality and version immersive, grab a Porsche, Ferrari or Japanese sports car, throw it into the corners and feel like you are Matt Farah. You need to add this to your library. The paid version is amazing, but even the free one is a must drive.
Phoenix77
Phoenix77
Thanks for the great review, and kind words!
Sounds like you've been driving it in the best way possible... Thanks for the support :)

Cheers!
Man!! Me and my son just downloaded this and love these roads great job!! Might want to get the VIP for 2 way traffic thanks for creating this!
Phoenix77
Phoenix77
Thanks that's cool to know!

If you just want traffic, and you both have your own rigs...
Jump on the "Cruisin USA" online servers and race each other thru traffic (I think you just need CSP v0.177... Traffic lines are server side.. and they behave awesomely)

Have fun :)
No ragrets

Well spotted!
Ben went around the track adding graffiti...
So in return I put a few cones on his buildings roofs...
To this day, I still don't think he's found them :D
Easily the best map i've ever played. It takes skills to do it fast, so i just drive slow and relaxed. Its at "Shutoko's" perfection level. Thank you so much for do the base map for free!!. This game, with this capability of free roaming, and simulation, made me quit any other racing games i was in love with. This map was a huge part of it.
Phoenix77
Phoenix77
Thanks for the great words man, glad you're loving the Canyons.
You are certainly right, the canyons requires skill... it's good driver training to keep it legal in one lane, if you get used to driving one lane, it becomes much easier when you then decide to use the full road width again.

Cheers!
one of the best tracks out there. top 3 for sure!
Phoenix77
Phoenix77
Thanks mate :) I hope the other 2 are scratch built, and one of them is Union Island! https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/union-island.45276/

Cheers!
