The Porsche 908 was a winner at Monza and the Nürburgring, but for the 1969 Le Mans 24h, Porsche mained the new 917LH, a car so notorious for its handling that it even killed John Woolfe during the opening lap of the race. Three Porsche 908LH's were entered as backup for the quartet of Stuttgart 917's, which turned out to be the right call.
