History of Simrigs

I'm not sure what prompted my curiosity, but I searched through simrig builds to find the earliest aluminum profile rigs. It seems they started popping up around 2010 and definitely were a thing in 2011. Expense was the primary reason we didn't see them earlier. They didn't seem to become ubiquitous until the advent of the affordable direct drive open sim wheel circa 2015 made highly-rigid rigs a necessity.

Most simrigs in the 2000s were MDF/plywood constructions or adaptations of tables and desks. A few were welded-up steel or aluminum, either homemade or manufactured.

There has always been someone re-purposing a car (or portion of a car) for their simrig. One of the more well-known examples was Shaun Cole's vintage Formula Vee tub featured on some of the early Inside Sim Racing episodes.

Motion rigs were already available from D-Box in 2007.
