A little off-topic, but why does the Top Gear site (a BBC programme) have advertising?

In the UK, there is no advertising as they are not permitted to do so. However, where you access the site from outside the UK or perhaps your connection is through aforeign ISP you'll get advertisements.

theres no adverts on the BBC Top Gear site, only on the Top Gear magazine site http://www.topgear.com/uk/ & they have a note on the bottom expalning how it funded.

This website is made by BBC Worldwide.

BBC Worldwide is a commercial company that is owned by the BBC (and just the BBC).

No money from the licence fee was used to create this website.

The profits we make from it go back to BBC programme-makers to help fund great new BBC programmes.
