RaceDepartment Historic Grand Prix Season 8 Round 4

Welcome back to Round 4 of the RDHGP S8. Round 3 was a shocker for me, but that’s my own fault, I deliberately pick the tracks that fit the profile for the season, not just throw together a load of tracks I like. As we’ve found before, a mix of cars were pretty well spread across the grid again, which is always gratifying to see.

After a couple of good fantasy tracks, we will be coming back to a real world track for Round 4. We go 4,200 miles East from Lexington to the province of Cadiz in Andalucia, Spain, and the Circuito de Jerez track in its 1988 layout.

Circuit Notes
Jerez is located in South West Spain, in Andalucia, approximately 10 miles from the Mediterranean Sea. Its primary industry is centred around the wine industry, the most famous of which is sherry. The circuit opened in 1985, has held the Spanish F1 Grand Prix 5 times, the European Grand Prix once, and the Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix every year since 1987, apart from 1988 which is why we were allowed to sneak our way onto its busy schedule.

Jerez is a very different proposition to the previous tracks we’ve driven, in that it is a relatively wide track, allowing multiple lines through several of the corners and complexes. It is not an overly complex track, but it is not so simple that it is only about the horsepower.

Jerez has a relatively long S/F line, allowing cars to get up to top speed under normal circumstances, and relatively high speed at the start. After the pits exit, you encounter a heavy braking zone for T1R – Curva Expo 92. A slight uphill approach and an Armco on the inside makes the exit slightly unsighted, but it’s quite a classic turn, the camber slightly helps the turn in, and allows you to be on the accelerator nice and early for the exit.

You only get a moment on the throttle though, possibly not even long enough to change gears, as you are hard on the brakes almost immediately for T2R – Curva Michelin. This is tighter than T1R, and slightly downhill, which takes out some of the camber help.

Immediately following the exit of T2R, you see the slight uphill gradient of T3L, able to be taken flat out under acceleration, opening onto a short straight. Flat on the accelerator with the Race Control Tower in the distance, and you throw the nose at the similarly uphill and gentle entry of T4L, a long and shallow turn where you can build up some serious momentum.

Containing that momentum is the key to getting T5R right, ease the nose in gently, try not to scrub off too much speed on entry, get on the accelerator again for a second or two and then brake and ease the nose in again for T6R, a slightly tighter turn.

Get on the accelerator again for the short straight out of there, drifting over to the right ready for the quick braking and turn in for T7aL, the first part of the Chicane, settle the nose and get on the accelerator again for T7bR the exit of the chicane onto the rest of the back straight, under the Pirelli banner.

Some heavy braking is required on the approach for T8R – Curva Dry Sac. This is as tight as T2R-Michelin, so make sure you are not too optimistic and scrub off into the outside. There is sand out there that will grab you. Exiting Dry Sac, it’s flat on the accelerator, back towards the Race Control tower and the back of the Grandstand, and you come to T9L, a corner that you can really attack flat out, carrying as much speed onto the following straight that you can.

You hit T10L here and this is a real test of driver control. While it’s a long, long corner, it’s a real mixture of speed and patience. You need to get your car right on the limit of what it can handle, but going over that limit will really cost you time to recover. Again it’s a nice aggressive exit onto the short following straight.
Brake for T11R – Curva Angel Nieto – but it is not a particularly tight 90, so there is some leeway with what lines you can use here, but that leeway stops for T12R – Curva Peluqui. A classic, tight 90, it needs to be handled safely, because you do not want to push the boundaries on this corner and lose any control. Peluqui opens out onto the exhilarating closing section of Jerez, a series of high speed turns taken pretty much flat out, so you need all your speed in this section.

First up come T13R – Curva Alex Criville, taken flat out under acceleration (this is where the newer Chicane Ayrton Senna is situated), onto a slightly downhill straight and through the even faster T14R – Curva Ferrari, all about bravery throwing the nose at the apex and hoping to hang on.

Finally, you will be approaching top speed before you have to throw out the anchors past the pit entry for the final corner T15L – Curva Ducados. This is a wide hairpin, similar to T2R & T6R, so the classic line of wide approach and cutting back to the apex is probably faster, but it does leave the inside wide open for late braking passing attacks. That it is off camber makes this a treacherous corner whether you are attacking, defending or simply trying to get through without losing too much time.

Stand on the loud pedal along the S/F straight and across the line for another lap of Jerez 88.

Got me my first pole for ages:)
np Ross with you blocking the track in Q, **** happens, and I doubt I could make a faster lap then the one I got pole with.

Had a bad start in the race, as always in GTL......
Had the usual scrap with Stuart, but to me was we never in touch with each other this time, then he followed me for the rest of race, in the beginning laps was he huge in the rear mirror, but he schrimped little lap by lap, I was never close to reel in Ross, hes just to fast in his Elite:)
Had some lappings in the end, and as usual is it never any problems with that here, among all great drivers and gents.

Thanks Stuart and R-D for this great league.

I am full of confusion after this race. Thought this track, out of all of them, would suit the Jag, but it seems not. Was sliding all over after 10 laps so pit in for new tyres on lap 14, which seemed to last 2 laps and sliding again. Thought it may be driving to aggressive but even driving slower and more smoothly had to crawl round corners as there was just no grip. It was funny at first but the more it went on the more annoying it got so when I started to get lapped I pulled over, watched the football and crossed the line when the race was over.

One to forget.

Congrats Ross again, zooming away and also the podium.

Well I finished 10th, lucky for that, and I wasn't lapped but I exspected it to happen because I had three offs, all of my own doing ...lack of concentration. Had a fair start and was behind Bob M. for a few laps. I tried but I could not get by him .... good defending and finally I tried to pass him on the last corner but I bailed out at the last moment for fear of causing an accident, lost control somewhat and two drivers passed me rounding the corner. I defended Knut for several laps and was feeling the pressure a little and went off track in corner one and Knut zoomed by. Now Hans was closing in and we battled back and forth. We each had unforced offs and so we traded places acouple times. By now I was well back and never saw any front runners so I was alone. I noticed on the last two laps I was all over the place hitting curbs and going wide in several corners.

Wd to Ross, Nils, and Stu, cheers to all drivers and thanks to Stu for organizing.

Wd Roland for a 7th place.:)

Need to see Tim hounding my bumper waiting to jump by me with an "Oh Ya" and miss Bob H"s words of encouragement for all of us slower drivers.

I hope to be back for the next league race, but it depends on what happens with my mum. The docs reckon 3 or 4 days, then there's the funeral :( Tbh, I'm pretty much numb atm

Tim, that really is afwul news:( ... losing a loved one that close to you is one of the worst things in a lifetime. And the inevitabilety of it doesn't make it any easier to bear. I can imagine that from the 100's of things on your mind right now, simracing is NOT one of them..
Stay strong mate, my thoughts are with you and your family.

And while this news makes yesterday's race seem rather meaningless, I cannot deny that it went well for me and I enjoyed it quite a lot.
Again, I practised quite a lot for this one, and this time it paid off... Not only did I qualify in 9th, which is unheared of for me, I was just over two seconds off the really fast guys' pace, while the gap was over 4 sec. last round!
Messed up my race start, almost stalled the engine, went into 1st corner as 10th, but could pass Bob on track and Ondrej who had an off in lap 1, and inherited 7th place as Dmytro had to retire early in the race.
I could see the #3 to #6 cars slowly vanishing into the distance together like on rails, judging from my XD readings that was quite a close battle!
Raced on all alone for a while when Bob and Ondrej started closing in on me, until Bob got really close but then had to back off, as he apparently had tire issues.
Alone again, while the little red Lancia shape in my rear view mirror slowly got a little bigger every lap, but then Ondrej found Knut chasing him and had to defend his position. From what I could see they had quite an intense battle for a number of laps, slowing them down just enough for me to keep a decent gap all the way to the finish.
So although once again I missed out on most of the close racing action, a 7th place for me is an amazing result so I went to sleep with a smile on my face.:) .

Plus...what I'm most happy with, is that for the entire 24 laps race I... DID... NOT... repeat.. NOT... SPIN... OFF.. ONCE... !!!
While that will mean little to most of you, for me that's quite a welcome change!

Congratulations to Nils for the pole, to Ross, Nils again and Stuart for the podium, and thanks! to all drivers.
And of course special thanks to Stu for bringing us another great round and to RD for hosting us.
Hope to see you all next time!

Had a nice race this time, car was ok an start from p12 could keep on with Jack an after some laps driving on p9 for a short while with Ondrej chasing me, take a lap or 5 to pass me:) than a great part of the race with Jack having some random offs but a lot of fun, with a lap or 5 left my tyres have had it (firts race I had this ?) an after a big of in T1 Senad pass me try to keep on but having trouble to hold the car on track so take it easy to get the car to the finis laped by a few cars an Fin on p 12 !

Grats Ross -Nils an Stuart ,thanks guys for racing !!
:D

My race went again pretty straight forward, I joined 15 minutes before qualification, so really not much time to practice. But I found quite good pace. My start went again very well, I gained some places and it continued with good fight for positions (I dont remember names, sorry guys). Until I made a mistake and braked late - with my little red FWD it is catastrophic, because once you lose your racing line you are screwed and only thing you can do is to pray not to crash hard... I didnt, but lost a lot of positions - I settled behind Hans and Jack and had to catch them :) I was successful after few laps of great fun and next on my list was Roland - but he was slower only by few hundreds of second, so it wasnt easy to catch up with him - plus I was doing time by time small mistakes, which cost me time. Then Knut appeared behind and from small white point became big monster and I had to defense pretty hard, once I though I lost it but I was able to gain the position back and it was the last time I was behind Knut - I was slower, but not that much that Knut would dominate me, so I kept him behind until he made a mistake and I relaxed until the last lap, when I knew he wont overtake me if I dont do a mistake which I didnt luckily, but my chances to catch Roland were gone too :)

One of the best races in my RDHGP career, a lot of fair battles, a lot of fun. Thanks RD and Stu!

So far my best season :) This number of participants suits me well, makes really good and friendly atmosphere.
