RaceDepartment Historic Grand Prix Season 7 is Go – Touring is Grand again.

Welcome to Season 7 of the RaceDepartment Historic Grand Prix (RDHGP), covering the Spring / Summer session of 2011. After last season’s (successful) “new class” of vehicle, the GTC-72’s, this coming season takes us full circle, back to the class that I ran in my first ever RDHGP as organiser – the GTC-65s.

In terms of vehicles available for use, the GTC65 class is the most populous here at RD, with a total of 25 models available. However, with variety comes disparity, meaning the GTC65 cars have a wide gulf in performance from top to bottom, hence the creation of the 3 groups we now use at RD. We have eschewed the fastest group – Group A – as it is not as well balanced as the others, and probably too close in performance to the GTC72’s from last season to be a worthwhile contrast. Similarly, we have not chosen the slowest cars in the class – Group C – as (while it is well balanced) it contains all but one of the Cars we used in Season 3.

That left us with Group B, a core group of true, classical GTC65 vehicles, augmented by some later dated Touring class Cars, whose all-round abilities means that they get promoted to this class for performance matching.

With regard to the venues chosen for this season, we visit the Middle East for the first time at Bahrain, Singapore and its temporary road course gets a first taste of the Historic Grand Prix, and we have our finale at one of the most popular tracks in the Historic Racing Club - the 200km of Lime Rock Mountain.

The season opener takes us to Japan, specifically to Oyama in the Shizuoka Prefecture, and the Fuji Speedway, in it’s 5th Layout/Configuration.

Circuit Notes

Located in the foothills of Mount Fuji, the Fuji International Speedway was built in the 60’s, and was originally intended to be a 4km long, highly banked Superspeedway, but lack of funds meant that only one banked section was built, and then incorporated into a more traditional Road track design.

The track was altered in the late 60’s to allow a climb into the banking, as opposed to the blind crested drop that was there before, and which exacted such an horrific toll from drivers.

This altered track hosted the first F1 race to be run in Japan, the 1976 season decider that Championship Leader Niki Lauda withdrew from due to the horrendous rain and treacherous conditions, but which James Hunt navigated well enough to take the season by half a point. A crash a year later involving Gilles Villeneuve killed 2 spectators, and so F1 left Fuji, and did not return until 2007.

Despite F1 moving to Suzuka for their Japanese visits, Fuji remained – and remains – hugely popular for Sports Car, GTC and Drifting Championship racing, the latter being the only time that the circuit is run in reverse. Indeed - such is Fuji’s layout, with the ghost of that originally proposed Superspeedway still faintly recognisable, that the long Home Straight has hosted Drag Racing exhibitions.

The current layout was opened in 2005, and it is this circuit that we will be visiting in our Grand Touring Classics.

A lap of Fuji begins with a relatively long, wide and easy run from the S/F line and into T1R – 1st. This is a relatively tight hairpin, so there will be some very heavy braking going on into here. The cars are vastly different in their relative top speed, weight and braking performances, so all drivers should be prepared and aware for early braking, late braking and overtake attempts here. This will lead me into my first cautionary note of the season. People in cars with better braking characteristics cannot divebomb the inside line, effectively parking their cars there without ever having a chance of making the corner properly. And by the same token, people who run wide cannot just dive straight back to block the inside line if they’ve missed the apex and not care if anyone is there or not. Give people racing room – this is NOT optional. This does apply to all corners throughout the season, but I couldn’t really have asked for a better or more pertinent example to start off with.

Exiting out of 1st, there is a gentle right hand curve of T2R, taken under some pretty stiff acceleration, and before the hard braking zone and crested turn-in point of T3L – Coca-Cola. You need to try and carry through as much speed as the crest will allow you, and then get hard on the accelerator for the short downhill blast into the T4R & T5R section, collectively called 100R.

This is a test of both patience and control, as the first portion of the turn (T4R) will allow you to build up some fairly good speed, and then it will hit you with the sucker punch of the off-camber tightening second section, T5R.

Once you’ve negotiated 100R, it’s a quick squirt up to the braking zone for T6L – Hairpin. The various cars can attack this corner differently, and as there is a long period of acceleration after here, you should be aware of drivers slithering about as they try to get their foot down as early as possible.

T7L is a gentle curve, taken at full acceleration on the downhill stretch, where the slightly deceptive T8R awaits. This may need to be taken with a slightly breathed accelerator on some cars, or flat out on others, but even if you need a lift, it’s flatout as soon as you clear it.

From here you approach the relatively gentle T9R – 300R. This is not a difficult curve in and of itself, but it does just slightly unsettle the car if you aren’t clean through here, just as you are getting set up for the heavy braking for T10R – Dunlop.

Dunlop is a tight right-hand turn, followed almost immediately by the sharp left-hand turn of T11L, guarded on the inside by a solid wall. Drivers here need to be aware that, just because they have the inside line at T10R, they shouldn’t just assume that they have the inside at T11L. People who are close through T10R may be able to get though into the inside line of T11L cleanly. Again, just parking your car across the apex, or conversely moving across without consideration of what may be there is not acceptable.

You accelerate out of T12R uphill for a short burst, before setting the car up for the complex at the end of the lap. T13R – 13th almost comes back on itself, before you hit T14L & T15L – Netz. T14L is relatively gentle, uphill and crested, before it suddenly tightens beyond that crest through T15L.

T14L is a testing corner, as restraint through here will mean a correct entrance to T15L, and that is preferable to the time you’d spend getting back in shape through T15L after an over exuberant T14L.

From there it’s a steady approach required for T16R - Panasonic, as it is absolutely vital that you get the exit of this correct, as it leads on to the approximate 1km long straight, and every iota of speed lost exiting Panasonic will kill you down the straight. You cross the S/F line approx 2/3 of the way down the Home Straight, across the line and into the braking zone for 1st.

The Race Director has some notes for drivers. Please see the track map above for location of Race Direction note:-

All Corners Without Exception – The kerbs are not deemed as track, therefore 2 wheels must be within the white lines, on the tarmac, At All Times. Again, there are NO exceptions to this rule at any point on the circuit. Any exception to this rule is deemed illegal, any advantage gained by this method must be ceded immediately. Report people deliberately and excessively cutting.

Racing Room must be given to all drivers – and this works both ways. Divebombing into and across a corner denies people the chance to make the corner correctly just as much as someone obliviously (or deliberately) cutting the nose off of another driver who has achieved partial overlap fairly.
Regain the track safely - If you leave the track, you must rejoin the track safely. If that means losing another couple of places – so be it.

T1R – 1st – Especially on Lap 1. Be aware of people as you turn in here, it has the possibility to cause huge problems if drivers don’t respect each other. I am really tempted to put a “no-pass” rule in place for this corner on Lap1, but I will give the benefit of the doubt to you all. Do not make me regret my decision. Be aware, however, that any incidents caused by reckless or over aggressive driving in Turn 1 during the first lap will be dealt with severely, probably with a “no quali” penalty for Round 2.

T6L – Hairpin. As mentioned in the Circuit Notes, this is a tight, crested turn, and it is very easy to either turn in too early, or slide off the outside here. Be aware of people possibly losing control under acceleration here.

T10R – Dunlop & T11L. This complex is approached under heavy braking after the high speed T9R, so you will need to be aware of the differences in braking distances and relative manoueverability of the cars around you as you go into T10R. T11L is also guarded on the inside by a wall, so I will take a praticularly dim view of people being driven or forced into it. As mentioned in the Circuit Notes, be aware of what’s around you, and give people Racing Room.

T15L– Netz. Drivers missing this tightening corner to the outside must be aware of traffic as they try to rejoin. Selfishness and overeagerness here could well ruin more than one person’s race, so exercise prudence through this section.

T16R – Panasonic. Drivers will be eager to get on the accelerator as soon as possible, so be aware of possible spins under power due to overexuberance.

All points on the track – General Items
  • Lights can be put on - and left on - during Qualification only, if you are on a timed lap.
  • No lights are to be flashed to distract a driver during the race.
  • Lights may be flashed once to thank another driver, and this is the only time it is permitted. Please report excessive or illegal light flashing.
  • No Chat during the Quali or Race except by Race Control for information.
  • Car damage must be assessed realistically to know if it is possible to make the pits or not.
Incidents, Investigations and Penalties

As it’s Round 1 of a new season, everyone comes into it with a completely clean slate.

As a change from last season, 2 consecutive no-shows will mean removal from the League.

Please remember, the League staff will only review incidents if they are reported to them.

No report = no review.

Please try and remember the incident reporting guidelines: review, cool off, review again. Only after following the above process, and if you are convinced you still need to report it, should you let the League staff know.

Please give as much information as possible during the report (time of incident, drivers involved etc.)

Accident reports made within 24 hours of race completion will be ignored.

Any accusations or complaints aired in the Chat during or after a race will mean a penalty levied on the person complaining or making the accusations, even if a subsequent official complaint gets found in their favour. I simply will NOT tolerate any post race finger pointing.

As last season, I will convene a driver panel consiting of myself, Bob (as long as we are not involved in the incident) & a number of random drivers to make a 5-man panel who will then vote.

The chosen panel drivers will rotate as much as possible within the limitations of the field and incident. If you are chosen, please try and participate - if you yourself get reported later in the season, you wouldn't want your fellow drivers to not participate for you.

Liveries

You have chosen your car and livery already, and you must only drive your chosen car at any time during an RDHGP event. Every driver has a unique livery in this season of RDHGP.

Scoring System

Points are scored down to P20 (75% distance completion required) so people can fight for some points no matter where they are on the track, and hopefully have a season long battle with people around them in the League.

The Distribution is as follows for 100km events :

P3 - 20
P4 - 18
P5 - 16

It was an entertaining race. On lap 1 I got touched by Wayne, but looking at the replay I see that it was just an unfortunate timing. As the 131 is slowest when it comes to straight line speed, so he just started to slowly pull alongside me and I was trying to get a better line and turned into him, so I can't really blame anyone for that one. Soon after I tapped Hans and sent him into the grass (sorry again, mate) - waited, as I wasn't really competing with anyone at that point anyway :).

Later on I was battling with an orange Vette (sorry, I turned off the names affraid they'd distract me and forgot who drives it :)) and went wide in T1 fearing it will carry too much speed and sideswipe (it was a weird situation), went on the green tarmac that spun me out. At least I had yet another chance to overtake Hans at this point :). Later on I've closed the gap to Keith and had a difficult task of overtaking him in front of me. 131 is the slowest car on the grid, so it is hard work planning a pass - if a car block the optimal line in the slower corner you cant just position yourself behind it and overpower your opponent on the straight. In the end I made it though, was fun and stressful at the same time, good racing :).

Also just wanted to say a word about lapping the 131 - I hope no one who lapped sees it differently, but as the Abarth is a really underpowered car there is really no point in pushing past it in tightest turns. Just wait for a short bit of straight and fly by - that was the way I was letting lappers by. You can't really expect someone in this kind of car to stop before the apex of a hairpin to let you fly by in your Cobra, for instance :).

Of course this applies mostly when a 131 is fighting with anyone. If I'm without any chances of catching someone/defending I'll just move away anyway :).

PS: Peter, sorry for the blocking move on the final stretch. 1: In the mirror it looked like you were still behind my car (they work a bit awkward, really. Have to get used to it), didn't intend to scrape the metal. 2: I thought you were Keith, finding some outstanding pace and passing me on the last meters (the names again). I would've moved aside otherwise. Luckily it was just uncomfortable for you, not harmful :).

gratz Ivo for win!! :)
wd Andreas and Ryan for podium!! TBR 1,2,3 :D
i missed some power to make a TBR 1,2,3,4 :) but very happy with a P5 :)
say it already in chat in game but sry to Peter for hit in T1 lap2 or 3 i think... :s i completly missjudged my braking, try to avoid you but was out of control :(
thx Stu and RD to make that league running.
lets hope that we can have some more track who can fit a bit more for the Ferrari... :D
thx for racing guys!

Got one decent lap in qualy in 56 which reached finally  for the pole close in front of Ryan and Ivo.
Start went not well, had some wheelspin and after i switched to second gear i had also low rpm so went down to P4. First laps i had a quite good pace and could go fast back in front i think in 3 laps. Unfortunatly i got a little tap from Ryan after i passed him for P1 so had again to fight back to pass Dmytro and also Ivo but this leasted already till lap 10. And i noticed already at this point my times went faster down then from the Shelby´s. From this i was only able to stay in front of Ivo but couldn´t open a gap anymore. It became harder and harder (to not to say it viewed more and more as a driftchallange ) to stay on line with "normal" speed and 3 laps before finish it was easily over. I was sure up to 2sec slower then Ivo and also Ryan who came back. Finally i had both to pass and completed at least the TBR podium on 3rd :).
I hope other tracks are not so hard to my tyres or i can fix this a bit with setup, otherwise it will be difficult everywhere to hold at least my place from qualy.
Congrats Ivo and Ryan and also nice driven Dmytro behind me and Greg in the first Ferrari. Thanks all for racing as well as Stu for putting up the league again :good:.

it would be great if at least two drivers would upload their replays. Thanks.

Thank you for the race Stuart and RD.

Have never really enjoyed this track, the corners are too slow and long for my rubbish technique, but I was feeling fairly confident in pre-practice, being a little behind Andreas but a little faster than Ivo. However, as soon as I stepped into practice today, I really wasn't feeling in the zone at all, whether it was my slight hangover or just one of those things I really don't know and I struggled all the way through official practice.

Come qualifying though, as I tend to do (always surprises me, I guess it's a nice attribute to have), I found a little burst of speed to put it on 2nd, 2 tenths behind Andy and .1 ahead of Ivo.

Wasn't really prepared for the race start either, I really hate no warmup session to refoucus the mind. But I got off the line very well, Andy bogged down and Dmytro came charging through. I had hoped that Dmytro, Andy and Ivo might fight for a while and allow me some sort of lead, but they both got past Dmytro very quickly.

Andy made short work of Ivo and then short work of me a lap later. Then, stupidly, at T2, I expected the Corvette to go through there at the same speed, but it doesn't, and I tapped Andreas into one of those slow-motion spins. I desperately tried to correct him by pushing his front end straight, but all that served to do was spin me as well. D'oh! Andreas fell to 3rd, while I fell back further, getting bashed around by Greg and Peter for a lap :D.

Then got past Nils for fourth and started tracking down Dmytro for 3rd, closed right down on him, and then my second bit of contact this race, but still puzzled to how it happened even after watching the replay and my conscience is clear of any blame, but still it was weird. Going around T3, following Dmytro on his outside, as he lifted off his car washed across the front of my car, with my right front hitting his rear left (while going round a right hander), this sending him into a crazy spin. Sory Dmytro, really nothing I could have done any different I don't think. Thankful that you got 4th position back.

From there on i could see I was lapping much quicker than Ivo and Andy up front, with Andy being in the lead. Seemed that Andy's tyres had gone off and I was almost caught up to them when Ivo got past and was released. Andy has a small spin at the penultimate corner on lap 20 and I squeezed between him and the kerb for a second place finish.

One scary moment was lappinh Keith and Lukasz, having to squeeze between them under braking!

Thanks to Stu, real shame your race didn't turn out good. Congrats to Ivo and commiserations to Andy, if I hadn't bumped you then perhaps you would have built enough of a buffer for when your tyres went off.

I did notice Peters Ferrari is very similar to mine! eek! :O

I was praying not to squirm out of control there. had seen you coming and held line but with Lukasz defending from me it made the corner a bit trickier for you. will look good in the replay.

well quali went better than expected. got into the 2.03's just... .987 i think :) plan was to have an uneventful race and spend time learning the car, the other cars and the people around me. Had a few good dices across the way. goal to finish top 6 ferrari goal achieved (i'm sure someone will rumble me soon on this one!) :)

thanks for the race and remember we all turn up to have fun.

One scary moment was lappinh Keith and Lukasz, having to squeeze between them under braking!

Hopefully it was only a slight scare :). That's what I was talking about - I saw you, made room, but there was no way I was going to get off the throttle and loose a position I worked so hard for (as Keith wasn't far behind at this moment). Nice pass on the outside too, the sharper turns really suit you apparently (and the power for a getaway... Swoosh, and the Shelby's gone) :).

It was OK, I could see you were in a battle with Keith and didn't expect you to move over and lift off, kinda found myself catching you at the wrong point, equally I didn't want to slow down, as I was trying my hardest to catch the leaders.

Wow,
I just watched the replay and darn, cars are piled up all over the track ...

Anyways,
yesterday, my shifter decided to stop working and I needed to go from my beloved clutch + H-pattern shifter to no clutch and flaps :(
There is definitely an upside, not having to concentrate as much on getting the heel toe downshifts right and being able to concentrate more on racing.
The downside, however, is that I felt like having less control over the car and my start off the line was just ridiculus.

Luckily, I was able to avoid contact with all the cars piling up just before T4R.
I had lots of interesting fights with De Rijck, Carlos, Garry, Neil and Bohmer :)

Rijck in his vette just smoked my ass on the s/f line LoL
The battle between Carlos, Neil and me lasted over 6 laps hahaha ... and it was always the same: Neil and I passing Carlos after T1 or T2 but once on the straight, he just went past us both only to be passed himself after T1 again LoL
Apparantly, Carlos is not a "learn-resistent" driver, as he finally took T1 on the inside and was gone ....
After that, Neil and I had a COBRA DUELL which also extended over several laps with me claiming P11 and keeping it until the second FINAL LAP hahaha

By that time, my concentration was gone and so were my tires .... so I returned P11 to Neil ;)

Great race

Thaks Stuart and Race Department and all clean drivers 4 this great event =)

P.S. in case I got too close to others, I'd like to apologize!

Got completely mugged on lap 1 while trying to aboid contact with people, but the settled down. It did seem a lot of drivers were 4 wheels over the line at the same place lap after lap but thats upto them. I managed to get back up to my starting position of 16th and at the last corner Amir had a momoent and I nipped through for 15th. Had a good lead as Amir entered the finishing straight but the speed difference was a bit of a joke and he caught and passed me before the line.

On the whole a good race to start with but some drivers were a bit over aggressive in my opinion, which for some reason led me to try the same a few times, which I am not happy about but Congratulations to the podium and everyone in an Escort.

Well an ok race for me.

Quly
Did not get as far up as I had hoped I had the time there but just could not do it when I needed to :(

Race
I had a good start some people a bit fast in to T1. I hit Łukasz Demolin around t3 I had no where to go but as he said the escort is a little faster then the fiat sorry bud. Spent most of the race with Bob Miley had some awesome battles with him. I do think he was playing with me a little as when he did get a run at me near the end of the race when my tyres were gone he just pulled away from me by at least 4 to 5 sec by the end of the race.

Summery
A really good clean race was great fun and I cant wait for round 2. One thing I do the is that there will be to groups running in this league as the big cars are just way to fast and you cant really make the time up in the turns.

Enjoyable event

Q: Was hard to find some room. But when i did a 56.9 i was already happy, because it was a oke time. And not far behind Andreas and Ryan.

Race:

Came oke off the line. Dmytro had a rocket start same as Neil. But focused myself on the apex. Wich gave the 2 places back where others went to deep.
T3 i got arround the outside of Dmytro and and started to follow Ryan. After that Ryan and Andreas collided and gave me P1.
Started to push from there and was creating a gap to Dmytro. After that Andreas got passed him and started to close on me. After 6 laps he catched up to me in T1. But outbraked himself in T1 and went sideways behind me. Lucky i saw him in my mirror so waited to turn in when he drifted passed. Lap Later he still got me in T1. But from that moment he tyres where far more gone then mine. I could easy follow and watched the drift show. :p
This went on for about 10 laps or so. And Ryan closed the gap quite abit now. I believe 3 laps before the end Andreas outbraked himself abit in T1 and needed to go one gear down to control it again. Wich gave me the chance to get infront of him in T2. After that i just could bring it home to P1. :)

Was some fun racing. Especially the battle with Andreas. :)
Thanks Stu and cya at Bahrain.

I'll report later, my memory sucks and I'm not home right now so I don't have access to the replay.

I want to apologise to Neil G. for the light bump that sent him off the track in T3L and also to Thommo. I slowed down after I bumped into Neil and Thommo couldn't avoid me. I should have just kept on going and then let Neil through again when it was safer to do so, sorry for ruining your race Thommo.
