Mini Friday Skinpack

Use this thread to submit a link to your skin that you would like included within the mini skinpack - The skinpack will be updated every 2 weeks unless 2 or more skins are added

  • Maximum of 1 skin per member will be included at any given time
  • Your skin will be removed from the skinpack after 3 months if you have not taken part in Mini Friday within this time period. This does not mean you it will not be included again
  • Each skin must be in a separate folder if you are uploading on behalf of someone else. Each folder must be named with your name to make my life easier
  • Unless your skin matches the below sizes it will not be added - You will need to adjust and re-submit. The reason for this is due to issues that we have had in the past with oversized skins.

Body: 1,366KB
Windows Int: 513KB
Windows: 342KB

Each update will be ready to download on the Thursday before the event

Some of you may already know about this stuff.

Skin textures for Race 07 are saved in two different DDS formats - DXT1 and DXT5.
The difference between the two is that DXT5 handles transparency where as DXT1 does not.
People often accidentally forget to save in the correct format.

DDS are often saved with something called mipmaps.
A mipmap is essentially a scaled version of the main texture that the engine renders when an object is at distance.
I guess it is more efficient than scaling the full sized texture.
People often accidentally save mipmaps when not required and vice versa.

If you use the Simbin templates, and save the files in the correct format with the appropriate mipmaps, they will always come out to the sizes stated in the opening post.

Any other size means you've saved the texture incorrectly.

Here's a table of the combinations with the right formats in bold.
The wrong ones are also included to give you a clue where you might have messed up.

Body

DXT1 mipmaps = 1366Kb
DXT1 no mipmaps = 1025Kb
DXT5 mipmaps = 2731Kb
DXT5 no mipmaps = 2049Kb

Windows Ext

DXT1 mipmaps = 171Kb
DXT1 no mipmaps = 129Kb
DXT5 mipmaps = 342Kb
DXT5 no mipmaps = 257Kb

Windows Int

DXT1 Mipmaps = 342Kb
DXT1 No Mipmaps = 257Kb
DXT5 Mipmaps = 683Kb
DXT5 No Mipmaps = 513Kb

Is there any major side effect to having incorrect textures?
Debatable.

I guess the biggest problem would be for people with lower spec machines/gfx.
A body skin with no mipmaps would have be scaled from full size by the engine.
Repeat that problem for all 25 cars on the grid and I guess that's potential for trouble.

I wonder whether I could create a body with DXT5 and have a mostly transparent mini? :whistling:
