Sepang, Malaysia: The Formula One team of Marussia has confirmed it has held merger talks with rival Caterham in the latest sign of the financial struggles faced by the smaller teams on the grid.

Graeme Lowdon, Marussia president and sporting director, said Friday that "talks took place" but were not ongoing. Caterham also confirmed the Christmas 2012 discussion, but spokesman Tom Webb said no deal was reached because "it was soon clear that a mutually beneficial solution could not be achieved," adding it had less to gain from the move, since it has several blue chip sponsors. Marussia won no points in 2012 and continues to endure financial difficulties. It made headlines earlier this year when Timo Glock left in a cost-cutting move, replaced by a driver who could bring in sponsorship dollars.

One thing remains clear:
Marussia won no points in 2012 and continues to endure financial difficulties. It made headlines earlier this year when Timo Glock left in a cost-cutting move, replaced by a driver who could bring in sponsorship dollars. So after both Caterham and Marussia admit the talks, will they keep their heads down? Or will they openly talk about the possible merges again. It must also be noted that this season Caterham is struggling, with a severely under performing car and lack of drivers bringing in masses of sponsorships.

Will Caterham and Marussia be around next season? Only time will tell!

They need to bring back allowing the big teams to sell their baseplan cars. That would help these guys out alot! I am definitely against them merging though, More cars is better (y)

Imagine if Coca Cola became a team over the old HRT's :p Sadly that was confirmed last week that they will be partnering with Lotus, so your guess is as good as mine :)

personally i think the big boss should buy both teams and run them, retire as the head honcho and sit back and watch the teams grow bigger :)

would hate to see them to merge, i like Marrusia and i like Caterham just the way they are.

it's pityful to watch, they were lured in when plans said no team was allowed to spend more than 50 (?) million a year. once they were in, plans were dropped and now for the last three years they have been woefully outpermoneyed and outperformed .
