Has the sound changed?

I haven't been in AC in a little while but jumping in tonight, there seems to be a difference in the sound, specifically with the tires. They are quiet until absolute loss of traction. They go from no noise to screeching but there is nothing in between, like under threshold braking. I tried turning the tire volume up and the engine down to no avail. Could be me, I'm just used to more sounds in AC.
