Rebellion Racing team boss Hugh Hayden has died at the age of 66 after suffering a suspected heart attack.
A statement from the leading Le Mans Series squad said that Hayden was taken ill during a post-season team karting event in Portugal on Saturday.
Hayden originally founded the team as Sebah Automative in 1995, and moved onto the international GT racing scene in 2001 after great success in one-make Caterham championships.
A new partnership with Alexandre Pesci saw Hayden's squad move into prototypes under the Speedy Racing Team Sebah banner for the 2008 season, initially in the LMS' LMP2 class, and then in a split LMP1/LMP2 programme the following year.
This year it stepped up to run a two-car LMP1 programme under the Rebellion banner, taking second in the manufacturers' championship and third in the teams' standings.
The team has vowed to continue in Hayden's memory.
"Rebellion Racing team owner Alexandre Pesci and Rebellion Racing team manager Bart Hayden, Hugh's son and director of Sebah Automotive, have decided that the team's activities will continue in memory of Hugh and because he would have wanted that too," said a statement on the Rebellion website.
"Hugh's inspirational leadership will be carried forward by Bart as the team moves on into 2011."
