2010 24 Hours of Le Mans

Bourdais sets the night on fire

Despite bad weather forecasts, the first qualifying session was dry, and Team Peugeot Total’s Sébastien Bourdais made the most of the conditions to take a well-deserved provisional pole position.

bourdais.JPGThe first qualifying session did not hold any big surprises in the LMP1 class, as #3 Team Peugeot Total snatched provisional pole by half a second from the second #1 Peugeot under overcast weather conditions. Stéphane Sarrazin’s qualifying track record lap-time remained unbroken this evening, but the chase was really tremendous.

At the beginning of the week, everyone hopes that their upgraded packages will make them more competitive here, but there is only one provisional pole-sitter: Sébastien Bourdais. The #3 908 HDi FAP put in a stunning performance being the quickest car in the first qualifying session tonight from a field of 56 cars.

Today’s sessions already proved that Strakka Racing does not enter the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a walk-on part in the LMP2 class, but clearly, after the first day of practice, it is going to be close between Strakka Racing and Highcroft Racing for the rest of the week.

During first qualifying Young Driver AMR’s advantage continued unchallenged in the GT1 class with a comfortable two-second gap with their closest rival. The provisional qualifying result was much harder to predict in the GT2 class. Nevertheless, it is not so astonishing that team AF Corse SRL made the grade and might start from the front row in the class.

As rain is forecast for tomorrow, the grid positions for the start of the race might already be set tonight as the first qualifying session was in the dry. The second qualifying session is scheduled to start tomorrow at 7:00 pm.
