1980 German Grand Prix

The super-fast Hockenheimring hosts the German Grand Prix for the fourth time in a row. Carlos Reutemann was the winner here last year and comes as favourite to this year's race too after two podium finishes in the last two rounds. Jody Scheckter took his maiden win of the season Brands Hatch and is hoping to keep that form up. Only one thing is certain though: engines will be abused as the cars speed down the straigths over 300km/h.

Pre-qualifying

Usual business in pre-qualifying. Experienced number 1 drivers lead the way, this time by Tambay. Hunt was able to win Jarier by over a second which made Zunino's work in the second Wolf a lot easier. The Argentinean didn't play it safe however and was fourth fastest. Rebaque would thus be disqualified, along with ATS and Osella. Andrea de Cesaris was this time the fastest of the four.

Qualifying
Qualifying was extremeley tight between the leading trio. De Angelis, Piquet and Reutemann couldn't get any gap between themselves but in the end Williams drivers edged the Ferrari ace. McLarens were in fine shape in 4th and 5th. Scheckter was 6th fastest and eager to improve his position in the race. Jones was 7th and alongside him Villeneuve who is constantly qualifying in the top-10. Unfortunately Renault's race pace is lacking a lot and points have been hard to come by.

Fifth row was filled by young Frenchmans Pironi and Prost. Lauda in 11th edged out the Ligiers and Arrowses who had a terrible qualifying session, much like in France. Jacques Laffite would have a hard time starting from P13. Rest of the field was made up by Brabhams, Lotuses, Alfa Romeos and Wolves. Ensigns were the slowest of all and were sent packing on Saturday evening.

Race
Williamses got good starts as de Angelis lead from Piquet. Rosberg took third from Reutemann and was able to pass Piquet too on the straight leading to Ostkurve. Mansell held his 5th position and was followed by Tyrrells, Villeneuve, Jones and Prost. Laffite improved his position to 11th. His teammate however didn't have as good start. Binder's race ended in a four car crash involving Cheever, Depailler and Regazzoni in Clark chicane.

Slipstreaming was very effective on the long straights as the cars passed one another constantly on the first laps. After a three laps the train had settled down and the running order of the top-10 was: de Angelis, Rosberg, Pironi, Piquet, Scheckter, Reutemann, Mansell, Villeneuve, Prost, Jones. Lauda had visited in the top-10 but spun in Nordkurve and dropped to last. Laffite was still in 11th. Pironi, who had made a spectacular rise to third, was slowing down the pack behind him as he was unable to keep to Keke's speed.

Prost was making nice progress and got as high as seventh by lap 6. However, he was pushing too hard and had to retire when his gearbox failed him. Pironi dropped down too thanks to spin in Nordkurve. He joined the pack on eleventh place.

A few drivers retired in the coming laps but the leading pack remained largely unchanged. After pit stops de Angelis was still leading from Rosberg, Piquet, Reutemann and Scheckter who were battling for second. The top-5 were still withing 10 seconds from each other on lap 30 of 45. Mansell and Jones were someway behind battling for the last point. Laffite, Lauda and Daly were further behind.

Rosberg was struggling in the last 15 laps and one by one the chasing pack got past him. He was however able to bring the car home, contrary to Mansell who had electrical issues with his car.

After passing Rosberg, Piquet looked like he was on a mission. He chased de Angelis furiously but unfortunately for him there were not enough laps for trying to overtake the Italian. A brilliant 1-2 finish by the British team after a rather difficult two thirds of the season. Reutemann came home in third which meant he is now leading the championship all by himself. Scheckter lost only eight seconds to the winner but it was only enough to fourth place finish. Rosberg and Jones took the remaining points in 5th and 6th. Seventh was Arrows' Jacques Laffite whose title bid is not looking good at the moment after failing to scorer points in three successive races. No points for Arrows also means that they drop to 4th in the constructor's after Williams pass the thanks to the 15 points scored today.

McLaren
Big effort from the boys, in the end Keke got rewarded with two points, although we easily could have had second and sixth. It was close, and the upgrades were encouraging. We look to the final races of the season and hope that we will be visiting the points more often than not.

It is really sad to lose some potential good points like this. Alain had a great pace and showed it in the first laps. We will look into the problem and try to solve it in the upcoming races.

Electrical problem? Well another reliability development again :D

1980 Austrian Grand Prix

Österreichring in Austria is hosting the eleventh round of the 1980 F1 season. Defending World Champion Carlos Reutemann is leading the championship followig his three podium finishes in three races. His lead over teammate Alan Jones is three points. The team in form however isn't Ferrari but Williams after a brilliant 1-2 finish in the last race in Hockenheim. The British team proved they have lots of speed in their car but how will it show in the high altitude of Austria? Renaults will most likely have a little advantage again thanks to their turbo engines.

Pre-qualifying

Pre-qualifying was very straight-forward. James Hunt and Wolf Racing were fastest and Ligiers followed in 3rd and 4th. Big news of the session was Héctor Rebaque losing to ATS's Andrea de Cesaris and Osella's Renzo Zorzi.

Qualifying
Arrows has struggled for qualifying speed lately but today both their drivers did a splendid job as Laffite grabbed the pole position and Binder backed it up with a solid 4th place. A very strong position to end the three race long drought in points. Championship contender Jones qualified second, suggesting an extremely interesting race. Reutemann however was only 11th fastest and was to have a long day ahead of him on Sunday.

McLaren's British rookie Mansell was third. Piquet was clearly the faster Williams in fifth as de Angelis, winner in Germany, was unhappy with his setup in 13th. Fittipaldis however were delighted to qualify both cars in top-10. Depailler had his best qualifying of the season in 6th while Lauda was 9th. Villeneuve, Pironi and Rosberg completed the first five rows.

Accompanying Reutemann and de Angelis in 6th and 7th rows was Jody Scheckter who was 12th fastest, meaning that the winners of the three previous races were starting from positions 11 to 13. Lots of overtaking to be expected... Shadows topped the bottom half of the grid while Alfa Romeo's experienced Clay Regazzoni failed to qualify for the first time this season. Bobby Rahal's disqualification cannot be regarded as a surprise.

Race
First chicane was tight as usual and this time it took two drivers out of the race as Tambay and Giacomelli collided. Alfa Romeo's weekend ended abruptly. Otherwise the start was relatively clean as Laffite lead the way from Mansell, Jones and Rosberg who got an exceptional start from 10th in the grid. Binder in fifth was already losing time as Depailler, Piquet, Reutemann, Tyrrells and de Angelis were hot on his tail.

The battle for lead was also hotting up as Mansell was showing what all the buzz around him is about. He was harassing Laffite and finally made the pass for the lead on lap 5. Jones was five seconds behind the duo and was followed by Rosberg. Depailler was fifth now after having gotten past Binder. Scheckter meanwhile was struggling for speed and had dropped to 11th after even Lauda had passed him. He was now having to defend from the Renaults and Shadows. De Angelis though had it even worse - the Italian was dead last following a minor off on lap 3.

Soon things were to go wrong for Ferrari too. First Reutemann retired with gearbox related issues on lap 10 and two laps later Jones had an off and dropped to 14th. Rosberg's engine blowing up a lap later promoted Fittipaldi's Depailler to third. Pironi, Binder and Piquet completed the top-6.

Pit stops cycled through and at around halfway through the 54 lap race Mansell was leading by a few seconds over Laffite. Depailler in 3rd was 20 seconds behind. Binder's Arrows had lost its oil earlier, forcing the home favourite to retire. Jones, who had fought his way thorugh the pack was now in fifth. Gaps were quite big and the tightest battle on track was for P8 between Daly and Villeneuve. Cheever in 10th had also sneaked into top-10.

On lap 35 the third placed driver retired for the third time. Depailler's engine lost power and the Frenchman joined Jones and Rosberg in the "what-could-have-been" club. Because the gaps were so big, only driver errors and technical issues provided change. Examples of the former were James "Shunt"'s and Alan Jones' crashes while Nigel Mansell unscheduled pit stop was of the latter.

After his extra stop Mansell gave it all trying to catch Laffite but unfortunately there just wasn't enough distance left, securing Jacques Laffite's fourth win of the season - a win that also sees him take the championship lead. Mansell was second but can't be completely happy after losing a certain victory so late in the race. Tyrrell's Didier Pironi had a faultless drive for third while teammate Scheckter also got a point in 6th. Nelson Piquet continued his solid form in fourth. Niki Lauda in fifth was able to take only his first points of the season but with the speed the Fittipaldis showed today, they certainly won't be their last.

McLaren
So close for Nigel, this experience should hopefully do him well for next season, where we are expecting him to really step up a gear. Shame for the Cossie to break down in Keke's car, without doubt we would have had a massive result had he been able to finish, but ah well.
A fantastic effort by both men today, and again, we'll celebrate it tonight.

Solid result with both guys in the points. Though we still don't seem to understand our car, as the performances are a bit inconsistent.

The second half was going well for us, but another double DNF.

1980 Dutch Grand Prix

Jacques Laffite
comes into the Netherlands as the championshup leader following his marvellous victory in Austria. With just four races to go this season, Laffite is now considered the favourite for the title. His main contender Alan Jones is sitting third in the standings after only one point to his name after the mid-season cut-off. Carlos Reutemann is between them in second but has already collected 19 of the possible 45 in this half of the season, in comparison to Laffite's nine.

Ferrari is dominating in the constructor's standings with a 34 point cushion to second placed teams Arrows and Tyrrell. Laffite has shown this season that Arrows has the speed but unfortunately Hans Binder has been largely disappointing in the #30 car and has only scored two points. He is 18th in the standings.

Pre-qualifying

Friday morning pre-qualifying was an interesting one for once! Wolf Racing's James Hunt couldn't make the track at all after encountering technical issues with his car. Rumours told that the team hadn't had enough time to rebuild the chassis after Hunt's massive crash at Österreichring. Hunt's absence meant that rookie Ricardo Zunino had huge pressure on his shoulders. In order for Wolves to progress, Zunino had to win the session.

With massive 29 thousands of a second to spare, Zunino duly delivered, earning his team a place in qualifying. Ligier's Patrick Tambay was struggling too, only managing 7th fastest time which opened the door slightly for Rebaque, ATS and Osella. Each of them had at least one driver outperform Tambay but unfortunately for them Ligier's Noritake Takahara carried the French outfit setting the second-fastest time. Jan Lammers gave a solid effort once again in his home grand prix. Not often do you see Osella in top-4 of pre-qualifying! The other "flying" Dutchman, Michael Bleekemolen, wasn't as convincing - he was the slowest of all.

Qualifying
Qualifying session was a Ferrari show. Determined to show their true pace after a few weaker race weekends, they locked the front row. Laffite followed his opponents in the title battle in third. Jody Scheckter had the best qualifying effort of his season in fourth. Next rows were made up of McLarens, Williamses and Villeneuve. Patrick Tambay improved his time from pre-qualifying for over two seconds earning himself an excellent 8th position in the grid.

Alain Prost in 11th was again stronger than his experienced teammate Mass who would start behind them. Between them in 12th was Fittipaldi's Lauda who was looking to add to his great fifth place finish from Austria. Jacky Ickx was 14th fastest and behind him in the 8th row were two unfamiliar cars. Tyrrell's Didier Pironi and Arrows' Hans Binder would require some driving if they were to get

Race
Front row starting positions meant very little at the start to the Dutch Grand Prix. Ferraris didn't get particularly bad starts but still it was Arrows' Laffite who lead the pack into turn 1. Reutemann hold on to second but Jones dropped down to fifth as Scheckter and Rosberg passed him. Williamses, Villeneuve, Mansell and Tambay completed the top-10 after first lap. Biggest movers in the start were Binder (up to 12th) and Ickx (down to 18th).

Reutemann wasn't going to worry his loss but overtook Laffite on lap 3 and regained the lead. Rosberg had passed Scheckter for third and Villeneuve passed Piquet for seventh and was now chasing de Angelis. On lap 10 they would get company after Reutemann dropped between them to 7th after a mistake. Piquet meanwhile was badly out of sorts, he had dropped to 11th behind Tambay and Prost but Binder in 12th was still some distance away.

Again Reutemann was unscathed after his struggles and began his ascend up the ranks quickly. Laffite's blown up Cosworth made his job even easier. Following the Arrows driver's retirement the running order on lap 20 of 72 was: Scheckter leading from Jones. Reutemann around 10 seconds behind, ahead of the McLarens (Rosberg had pitted and returned behind Mansell). Tambay in sixth and fighting with de Angelis, Lauda, Villeneuve, Prost and Piquet. Mass, Binder and Depailler were five seconds behind them.

Leader of the race encountered problems on lap 24 also as Scheckter joined teammate Pironi in the pits. Pironi's terrible weekend had ended 10 laps earlier. South African's retirement promoted Ferrari back into 1-2 lead which they had lost 20 meters into the race. Rosberg was 13 seconds behind after Mansell had pitted and rejoined in P10 behind Depailler.

Next eight laps were somewhat calmer. Pit stops cycled through and the tightest battle on track was for fourth place. Laps 32 to 36 however were anything but calm. The chaos started when Reutemann's suspension failed, forcing another title contender out of the race. Moments later Giacomelli crashed his Alfa Romeo in to barriers and a lap later de Angelis and Lauda let out a big cloud of smoke almost simulteanously. Finally on lap 36 Alan Jones joined the long list of retirements after puncturing his Goodyear tyre. Five retirements in a matter of minutes!

After a handful of drivers had dropped, McLaren suddenly had a 1-2 lead on lap 40. Rosberg was 22 seconds up on Mansell who was defending from Tambay. Piquet, Binder, Prost, Depailler and Mass were battling it out for P4 but they were almost ten seconds behind Tambay. Somehow the poor pre-qualifying effort had turned into the Frenchman's best drive of the season!

Did Tambay settle for third? Of course not! The Ligier driver had a great flow in his driving, passed Mansell on lap 49 and crossed the finish line second on lap 72. Despite Tambay's great race, he wasn't the hero of the day. Instead, it was Finland's Keke Rosberg who got his first win of the season after a brilliantly composed drive. Teammate Nigel Mansell came home in third, a result that will certainly please the team manager. Piquet was catching up to the Englishman but couldn't quite do it and had to settle for fourth. Hans Binder got Arrows important two points and Jochen Mass got the last point after teammate Prost had retired from P5 four laps earlier.

phew
when I saw Lafitte out I thought it was over.
But then both Ferraris out for the 2nd time in succession along with Binder scoring us points and cruically sponsor money saved the day.

though 13 races to build the new chassis!:mad:
Arrows, this was the worst time to give me a lengthy development..

Oh my god! PODIUM!! Wow...I can never believe that...Just after the previousrace was disappointing, we finished on the podium...I can never believe that...! :inlove:

Disappointing. By the looks of it we'll have to settle for 5th in the constructors', as Williams and McLaren seem to have the momentum on their side.
