“Assetto Corsa Needs More Tracks” (does it?)

assettocorsa-fictionalcircuit.jpg

Looking into one of the most debated arguments about the Italian sim.

One of the usual complaints regarding Assetto Corsa was that it does not feature many tracks. Criticism usually revolved around the quite heavily presence of Italian circuits, even minor ones, but almost no tracks from the Asian or American continent. European selection is also limited to a handful of renowned locations.

Personally, I see the reasons behind the discontent, as the total number of tracks is of about 15, 16 whether you consider or not Trento Bondone and the historical ones. Adding to that figure are some fantasy venues like Black Cat County or places like the Drag Strip or the Drift pad, which are limited to very specific use. At the same time though, I stand with those who value quality over quantity, and having a decent collection of laser-scanned tracks is preferable to me than having more but with lower grade consistency.

I am also convinced that this issue is mostly limited to the console players. Why I say that is pretty obvious, I believe: Modding. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 users have no possibilities to extend the AC track roster in any way. PC players instead have a fine selection of circuits available at their disposal, and 90% of these are gratis to download for anyone.

Quality is also very high, with many of these recreations being very faithful to the original, result of many hours of work spent on every fine little detail and sometimes started with even LiDAR data at hand. I think that no one can really argue that at the moment of writing of this article, we have many beautiful tracks free for AC, expanding further the possibilities of the sim.

It really is a matter of being able to make the most of the resources available, searching in the download section, looking for what could suit your needs and enjoy it while thanking the author for his/her work. A suggestion I dare give also is - take your time. Unfortunately, we as simracers have become rather spoiled. When we had just a half dozen cars to be run on a handful of tracks in just a couple of sims, almost nobody used to complain that there wasn’t enough to have fun with. Now that we have a half dozen different sims, each featuring quite a selection of different vehicles and circuits, we always pretend more.

I believe the problem lies within the fact that we do not commit to a car or a track for more than a few hours, after which we feel bored and in need of a change. That is not constructive, and makes us unable to fully appreciate what we are given. Practicing, doing some time attacks, developing consistency, should take days. All that should then converge into racing the AI, looking for or hosting multiplayer competitions on that specific venue. Jumping from place to place, vehicle to vehicle, does not help. I maybe take this a stretch further, but isn’t this kind of behaviour also making us unhappy most of the times in our real lives? Commitment is the answer. As I said in another article of mine, having many choices means that you actually have to make a choice.

Allow me to tell that once again I think that simracing can teach us to be a better person, if we use it as a proper tool of personal growth. If used improperly, it can favour bad habits that we already exhibit in our daily lives, and maybe worsen them. If put to proper use, it can become a way to weed out those bad ways and help us find a better balance.

Therefore, look back now at the circuits you have in AC, both official and 3rd party ones, thinking what would happen if you’d decide to spend even just a week on each, perhaps with different cars and in different conditions but always on the same location. With the clear intention of knowing it by heart and learn it in every detail, appreciating all that went behind it, whoever built it. Now tell me you still believe there are not enough tracks for you to have fun with, if you do.

Luckily there's quality mod tracks. More than there used to be. In the first years most of them were crap but now a lot more reach official quality, and some would say even surpass it.

After all some of the oldest Kunos tracks like Magione aren't really that impressive, compared to something like Watkins Glen or VIR mod. Even with the laser scan

And considering Zandvoort isn't scanned, I have no problem adding them into catalog, many of them feel like natural extensions of AC.

Only thing is that they aren't used as widely in multiplayer, due to being mods.

I have my mod track list relatively short in AC though, I just keep the absolute highest quality tracks. I see no point in having 200 random tracks, when I wouldn't even drive half of them.

And definitely, more tracks you have, worse your laptimes will be likely on each. No time to focus into anything, that's my problem with AC already. Abundance of content

I think AC has most of the current generation tracks available, but the actual number cannot match the amount of the last generation.
I miss a lot of tracks from the previous generation, but then online you only see a monotonous track variety.

We used to hold a very popular session with GTL on Friday evenings with 5-6 little-used addon tracks. There you got to know many unsung and unexplored routes and the challenge was higher than racing for the umpteenth time around Spa or just using a single track during a scheduled event. But you can´t race GT3/F1 around Ingliston f.e.;)

So when comparing to the past we have less tracks, but we have more than plenty right now.

"Xbox One and PlayStation 4 users have no possibilities to extend the AC track roster in any way. PC players instead have a fine selection of circuits available at their disposal, and 90% of these are gratis to download for anyone." That's it. I'am a almost 100% satisfied PC player. That would never happen if I used PlayStation or Xbox. On the contrary, I would be almost 100% frustrated.

I could see the frustration if I wasn't on the pc. I think every game could use more tracks, always. With modding thought this one doesn't necessarily. However if I couldn't get mods. That might be a different story.

Commitment for days would bore the hell out of me. I usually spend 3-4 hours with a car on a track, but days? No. Assetto Corsa has few racetracks, which is a bit sad, especially for console players, but fortunately there are a lot of quality mods out there to play with. I don't use car mods at all because I think AC has a pretty good car list, even though there are things missing there too, but I can live without them and because the car mod quality varies so heavily I try to avoid them.

In regard to consoles, it's pretty clearly being compared to the much larger budget simcade titles, which is not really fair. This is a self-published game (later picked up by 505) it does not have Microsoft or Sony money behind it.

Totally agree with the Commitment part. If it wasn't for competition, either through offline AI/hotlap or online multiplayer, I wouldn't practice something for more than 1-2 hours. Of course the combo should better suit one's taste, but not a necessity. One good example is live for speed, with only 8 tracks available and no real singleplayer mode, yet people raced on them tirelessly for a decade before its decline, due to highly competitive hotlap/multiplayer.

There will always be some tracks that we want in a game/sim that won't be there. I would have to agree that if I had AC on a console and was limited to only the "official" tracks... I would be badly wanting more. VIR, Watkins Glen, Riverside - if I didn't know they were mod tracks I would probably think they were official content. I have a Road America I think is good. Road Atlanta 2017... LOVE driving that one. I tried a Daytona road course and Mosport, but at the time didn't think they were as good as mods of those tracks I have on another sim, so uninstalled them. I'm sure there's a lot of good ones out there I haven't seen or tried. My modding skills stop at the occasional repaint, and I've only ever done a couple and never posted them. I'm forever grateful to the talented modders that continually give extended life to these sims.

Excellent and timely column, Leon_90. Your suggestion of focusing more time on a particular track is wisdom. With the number of cars and tracks in various great sims, it is actually overwhelming at times and seems like overload.

I started really enjoying sims like Assetto Corsa and Automobilista when I forced myself to master a track before trying another .What I found was that many, many hours of rewarding fun can be had mastering a track in one car, then mastering multiple cars on that same track. That is when I came to understand, appreciate, and enjoy the nuances of different cars . There have been numerous tracks and cars I thought I hated and came to count as favorites by ... Taking my time .

'sim racing is life' i think is what the author's was trying to say..

dont need lot tracks dont even need lot cars just need track for track car and 'open' road for road car. road should be seenic and the tree is important for quality specially for the road track no croud is better than cardboard croud the author post about that i think once and the tree look bad

Mugelllo is my favorite of the Italian tracks, lends itself to tight racing but also a little tricky to tune a car for, and unfortunately not as common in sims (I'm looking at you iRacing...). If I was limited to a console, I'd probably pick up AC just for that track!

Road Atlanta 2017... LOVE driving that one.
and Road Atlanta.

Thank you gentlemen, I didn't know that was on AC now! Going straight to the mod forums

I'm not quite sure what mastering a track is, but we sure do have a lot of tracks for AC, as well as a lot of cars, but we'll always want more.Consoles will always be limited somewhat anyways, I think thats what consoles are all about, instant gratification." just blast to Palm Springs. Instantly feeling better about being me"
Now the more dedicated of us will just practice a track over and over, I know I did in GPL, and wasn't racing anyone else but me. But it was a blast, and AC is just like that, and it looks better as well.
Sometimes I just put Spa1966 on and race it, just time trials over and over until I screw up.. I catch my breath and wipe the smile off my face, and try again.
I hope AC doesn't just get left behind, it really is the perfect balance of graphics balance and useability, and it reminds me a lot of Automobilista, or maybe its the other way around.
Just pick a car and track and drive....
