Even though sim racers had been looking forward to an official BTCC game, there had been serious doubts about it seeing the light of day. Initially announced for 2022, the game was most recently delayed to 2024. Now, it is officially canceled altogether, according to a TOCA statement.

The organizer of the BTCC chose to terminate the licensing agreement with Motorsport Games. This comes just a few days after news broke that MSG would reduce its workforce by 40%.

It is with regret that TOCA now advise that it has been forced to terminate that agreement forthwith, due to ongoing fundamental breaches of the agreement by Motorsport Games. Having been given sufficient latitude to rectify those contractual breaches, unfortunately Motorsport Games has failed to do so.

BTCC Game Canceled: “We share the frustration”

Furthermore, TOCA argues that it made this decision “to protect the reputation and intellectual property of the BTCC, including those of its participants and partners.” The organization admits that “this news will come as a huge disappointment to our hundreds of thousands of fans, many of whom were eagerly anticipating the release of a new BTCC game… and we very much share that frustration, due to Motorsport Games being unable to fulfil its contractual commitments.

However, there is official BTCC content under the MSG roof. rFactor 2 has seen the introduction of cars and tracks step-by-step since the start of the agreement with TOCA in 2020. The sim now features the full grids of the 2021 to 2023 seasons. Additionally, most of the circuits on the calendar are there as well.

What’s next for IndyCar and Le Mans Ultimate?

The BTCC license is not the first that is not under Motorsport Games’ roof anymore. Recently, the company sold its NASCAR license to iRacing. The company is going to produce a standalone game of the popular stock car series. IndyCar still has an agreement with MSG, although the open-wheel series game’s future is uncertain, too. Whether the series is next to pull the plug remains to be seen now that the BTCC game is canceled.

However, Mike Straw of Insider Gaming claims he has been told that the IndyCar game's staff has been laid off by MSG. This would likely mean that the title is not going to see the light of day either. Straw had reported that Motorsport Games could lose the NASCAR license as early as August - iRacing bought the license not even two months later.

The IndyCar game was scheduled for launch in 2024, and recently, a trailer had emerged. It would appear that the game was quite far along in development. Could another entity purchase all assets?

IndyCar themselves have not announced how they are going to handle the situation. Penske Entertainment (the owners of the series) CEO Mark Miles told racer.com that "we are in regular communication with Motorsport Games to get the information that we need to decide what’s best for us going forward." No decision has been reached yet, according to Miles.

As things stand, it appears that all of Motorsport Games’ eggs are in the baskets of rFactor 2 and the upcoming Le Mans Ultimate. rF2‘s player numbers have recently increased after the additon of a new competitive online system. WEC fans eagerly await LMU by the end of 2023.

Well.. Who would have guessed, right? Next in line is Indycar. I bet they will soon be gone too.
And obviously LMU in Q4 is not happening since it's not even on pre-order on Steam and not a single trailer or ad have been put out. Maybe Q1-Q2 2024? Probably not worth the money anyway as quality will likely be poor given all the staff redundancies in the past months.
Indycar has been dragging its heals about the whole thing, and turning deaf ears to those that said don't do it in the first place. Its likely they'll just sit and wait for MSG to fold completely before taking back their licence and then doing nothing with it.

so the rights codemasters had would have been to the 1997/98 and 2001 seasons which is probably why they never really did anything with them.
I'm pretty sure there were BTCC cars in the newer Grid games, but I don't have it installed so I can't check.

Who?

Just like with IndyCar, it's not like there has been a big push from anyone to make any games the last 15 years?
IRacing has the content but can't organize the indy500 (as it did for many years) since the agreement between msg and indycar.

AMS2 has content based on indycar but had to modify the modern version of the car for a fictional one for the same reason.

Does someone has Roger's number to share or can just tell him what's going on? I think he has finished with the Nascar celebrations.

There was yes the last grid game had a couple of super tourers in it the newest addition being the 97 renault laguna and audi a4 and there has been a focus (the same one in fact that is in the new forza game) in one of the grid games too.

Thanks to AndreasFSC's mod I can enjoy the super tourers seasons from the 90s but it would be nice to get some current stuff as well.
A rF2 one would be great.

Was always going to happen Alan Gow and the team at TOCA are very much a no nonsense group of people and rightly so. Unfortunately can't see them licencing out for a btcc game again after this. Took them the best part of 20 years to convince this time so not likely to happen.
What do you mean? They will refuse free money and promotion?

There hasn't been an official BTCC game since the 90's because there is no market for a game about a domestic touring car series not broadcast anywhere outside the UK, at least not with the license fees they are asking for. In no universe is the BTCC license worth $1 million, maybe not even $100k.

Stephen Hood has inherited the Titanic 5 minutes before it hit the iceberg, this is a monumental cluster**** of a company to put it politely.

I love S397, someone buy them out please or else they'll be going the same way, down with the ship.
Stephen Hood didn't inherit this mess. He was part of the problem. He's a good games designer, but he's not a businessman.

They put their reputation over the "free money and promotion" which isn't free at all. They don't need a game to promote their selves as a series nor need the money. They've gone 22 years with no official game and it hasn't made a slight bit of difference to the series so I'm sure they won't lose any sleep over there not being one going forward.

they added cars and british tracks to rF2 then gave up on creating game that wouldn't have as much hype anyway which is kinda smart tbh especially since they have that Le Mans license and WEC is growing rapidly atm and they just couldn't release so many games in decent state in short period of time, and yes shockingly LMU looks like game in decent state and also new multiplayer platform for rF2 is good too (which will be part of this LMU title too)

Neither of those examples are IndyCar games though. I am not a fan of exclusive licenses at all, as I feel that removes competition.
However, that games that have cars and tracks but not being able to use the official name, isn't that much of an issue in my opinion. iRacing can run the 200 laps challenge at Indianpolis with the DW12 (or IR18 if they have that car). They just can't use the official name.

For what I know the problem wasn't for free or not for free. The problem was IMS had no way out of the exclusivity deal not Reiza asking license for free. Reiza still came home with Indianapolis Motor Speedway officially licensed from the talks over Indycars, pretty sure money was involved in that ;)

And my response was to "give Reiza the license". All open licenses are there for the taking, if one pays enough for it.

No they are not open since they are under exclusive deal. That is exactly the point. Doesn't matter how much you pay now.
If they become free again (hoping IMS wakes up) then bidders will offer their price and the best will win or maybe IMS will just elect not to go with an exclusive this time after such a glorious experience of putting all of their eggs in the same basket.
