Le Mans Ultimate Gameplay Footage Highlights Monza, New Hypercar Sounds

You wait months for Le Mans Ultimate updates, then two along at once...

A day on from unveiling the Ferrari 499P with a rendering, the first formal gameplay footage has been released using the Le Mans-winning car for Le Mans Ultimate.

As a rFactor 2 derivation, you would be forgiving for thinking Le Mans Ultimate would look and sound identical to the over-a-decade-old driving simulation. Perhaps now, though, we’re starting to see some noticeable differences as we near the new title’s release date.

So far, shiny screenshots have looked promising. But apart from a public test at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans event and a tiny teaser of cars moving on track for the release date announcement, little to no gameplay footage has been available.

That changes today, 21st December 2023, with an onboard lap around Monza with the Ferrari 499P following the car’s unveiling yesterday. You can watch it embedded below.

In action, we can see a refreshed Monza (when compared to rFactor 2), with updated signage such as the WEC digital display above the pitlane entry and what appears to be enhanced lighting effects.

The car’s interior, while masked slightly by a shallow depth of field effect, looks to be extremely detailed. Cables adorn the A-pillar, the carbon fibre weave of the dashboard is noticeable and the steering wheel display rate to the real-world device.

The main takeaway must be the sound, the 120° turbocharged V6 snarling up the rev range accompanied by the electrical hybrid whine – the latter especially noticeable under braking during which the system recoups energy. Unless we’re very much mistaken, it’s analogous to listening to an onboard from the 2023 season. Uncanny.

On the flip side, while gameplay at last is a positive sign of life – plus the accompanying stills of the Prancing Horse on track – we must also note what’s missing to date. Notably, there’s no sign of an in-sim HUD (although one was seen at the Le Mans event) or trackside camera angles and footage so far is bereft of any on-track opponents battling.

Moving images of vehicles using the new-build tracks not carried over from prior platforms – Portimão’s Algarve International Circuit and Fuji Speedway – must also wait for another time, evidently.

Le Mans Ultimate Ferrari 499P Monza Gameplay

While the media has not yet driven Le Mans Ultimate in its current build, it’s set to carry across and build upon rFactor 2’s tyre model, plus add in an asynchronous car-sharing multiplayer mode. We’d be staggered if Motorsport Games’ RaceControl online ranking system wasn’t involved, either.

Let’s hope that we see more from Le Mans Ultimate in the new year, and third parties get to go hands-on before its 20th February 2024 release date.

Are you expecting a budget title for a full licensed season and the Le Mans grid? Something we never got in any racing simulator and that many have been expecting for years. Moreover we know that the next contents will be sold as DLCs, not full priced games. It is fair from MSG. It reminds me of the good Race07 formula (which initially started with the bad WTCC the game formula, simbin had made that absolutely clever move and avoid its customers' rage...).

Selling yourself cheap makes you cheap.

My working assumption is that this is an rFactor 2 reskin, hence my take on what kind of price bracket it can demand. Remember what happened to MSG's Nascar title when it was very much a Nascar reskin of rF2: It was a trainwreck because while they polished what was there they didn't fix the problems that needed to be fixed.

It reminds me of AMS2 in that in the early days you really could argue it was a modded PC2 but they were offering 2 years (turned into 3) of DLC for the price of the $100+ AAA titles I'm alluding to here.

I don't think sim companies have the luxury of pretending to be AAA especially not MSG. They need to win back trust.

I had faith in AMS2 because of what I saw with their support of AMS1. MSG needs to build up that trust for itself.

all i see is attempts to hide the cockpit and paper2d trees. We get it, its "just rf2", but rf2 has good interiors, and is a great game, graphics not at ACC level, but leaps above say R3E where we are begging for a focus shift to hide it's crayon sketch interiors. Trying to stay excited for this game but these videos make me feel uneasy about what they are trying to hide under the banner of being "artsy"

Well, you assume it is a rfactor 2 reskin. It uses the same engine but the presentation and the game mechanics should be new. It is another game with its own rules.

Nascar 21 wasn't a reskin, it was in another graphic engine (if something was good in this one I would mention.its graphics) and it wasn't developped by S397 although based on rfactor2's physics (which may explain the technical and physics issues).

About AMS2, I assume your initial disappointment xas due to your disliking of Pcars2. Do you dislike rfactor2 to the point you're afraid of LMU? Do you feel robbed by Reiza about AMS2 100€/$ whole package?

No, I'm saying I like Reiza and AMS2. They had already earned my trust when AMS2 came out: I wasn't afraid it would continue to be just a modded PC2.

I don't dislike LMU, it's on my wishlist, but I am afraid based on MSG's track record.

They've got to earn back trust.

Looks like Rfactor 2 at it's visual best, will drive like RF2 so for anyone that doesn't own RF2 and loves endurance racing, I think they will be exceptionally pleased.

I have RF2 and only do limited endurance type racing so this is not for me. I have all this content already in RF2.

I think all the interiors have been reworked. If the 9X8 screenshots are anything to go by there is no need to hide anything. On discord it has been communicated that the cars will all be on the same level as the 992 Cup car. 'Nough said ... ;)

There have also some been some new infos shared regarding cleaning the windshields and it's nice to see that they finaly improved the sky rendering.

From statements several months back, all the cars that were existing for rF2 have not been used for LMU. Every car is new.

Interesting comparison...

If anything the AMS2 story gives me more hope in the rF2 engine... There's less game breaking bugs in it for me...

However NASCAR Ignition failed not because of the rF2 issues, that's squarely on MSGS pulling an Ian Bell and rushing a merger of 2 engines... We are seeing similar issues with Rennsport... Merging 2 engines takes time to get right... Might even take over a decade in our comparison case...

LMU should benefit from having S397 work on it instead of a new dedicated team as was the case with Ignition... Which as we saw with S397s early work was always going to need much longer in the oven than MSGS was willing to give it...

New video:
Looks amazing. I hope that S397 focusses this time on keeping ALL content to look equally good and not some content great and other content "stone age". The same for the FFB, it should be consistent. IF that's done then this is going to be a winner if the VR and online system is the same as the new system in rF2 BUT then without buying DLC's constantly... So it all looks VERY promising to me, I'll buy it surely just to support them. I hope that it's worth it in the end.

Isn't that the same thing? Are we dealing with semantics for a bunch of non native speakers?
I am not a native engl speaker but for me "hyped" is not the same as "looking forward to". The difference would be for me in the level of emotional investment. Hype sounds more like almost obsessed with it and sitting at the edge of your seat to absorb every little information. While looking forward to something is more relaxed, as in "yeah i am interested and will check it out"

I do like what i hear and see from these videos. So its basically Europes version of the IMSA Series that you can race in iRacing, except i like the tracks of IMSA more than the WEC calender. But will gladly take LeMans Ultimate too. There is no need to decide for or against the other
I mean: Daytona, Long Beach, Watkins Glen, Road Atlanta, Road America, Sebring, Detroit (gosh i can't wait for this one to come to iRacing, love it, reminds me of 1990s Long Beach version)
Beats for me every track on the WEC calender.
And no, i am no american, i simply like these tracks better.

I'm monitoring the progress. I think I will wait until the first feedbacks from the community will come up.

A bit sceptical how MSG/S397 are dealing with fixes when looking back the last 5-6 years, when I heavily played rF2. But my hope is the team is able to focus more on the quality and eagerly working on rectifying issues. I guess the team has changed a lot (I consider this as a chance).

MSG doesn't have any other choice than giving the means to the team to launch a solid game. It is a crucial hit or a fatal miss this time. With the money already spent for this game, it would be stupid not to fully developped the game. Could it be the first racing sim in years to come out in a good state? The best title published by the worst company? How ironic and refreshing it would be, and I hope it will be.

Not a native english speaker, but for me "looking forward to" is just the right way to say "being hyped" which should be written at best "being hyped up" as an informal way of talking. "To hype" is promoting, communicating in media. We should just avoid to use that term imo. "To look forward to" is a really strong feeling. Native English speakers, just tell us your opinion (check your dictionary first), we shall be grateful to learn something useful there.

English is native to me (despite being Welsh!) and "hype" means going OTT with promoting something. and "hyped" is VERY exited about something. So I'd say several notches up from "looking forward to something". No idea if others think the same.
