Le Mans Ultimate Gameplay Footage Highlights Monza, New Hypercar Sounds

You wait months for Le Mans Ultimate updates, then two along at once...

A day on from unveiling the Ferrari 499P with a rendering, the first formal gameplay footage has been released using the Le Mans-winning car for Le Mans Ultimate.

As a rFactor 2 derivation, you would be forgiving for thinking Le Mans Ultimate would look and sound identical to the over-a-decade-old driving simulation. Perhaps now, though, we’re starting to see some noticeable differences as we near the new title’s release date.

So far, shiny screenshots have looked promising. But apart from a public test at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans event and a tiny teaser of cars moving on track for the release date announcement, little to no gameplay footage has been available.

That changes today, 21st December 2023, with an onboard lap around Monza with the Ferrari 499P following the car’s unveiling yesterday. You can watch it embedded below.

In action, we can see a refreshed Monza (when compared to rFactor 2), with updated signage such as the WEC digital display above the pitlane entry and what appears to be enhanced lighting effects.

The car’s interior, while masked slightly by a shallow depth of field effect, looks to be extremely detailed. Cables adorn the A-pillar, the carbon fibre weave of the dashboard is noticeable and the steering wheel display rate to the real-world device.

The main takeaway must be the sound, the 120° turbocharged V6 snarling up the rev range accompanied by the electrical hybrid whine – the latter especially noticeable under braking during which the system recoups energy. Unless we’re very much mistaken, it’s analogous to listening to an onboard from the 2023 season. Uncanny.

On the flip side, while gameplay at last is a positive sign of life – plus the accompanying stills of the Prancing Horse on track – we must also note what’s missing to date. Notably, there’s no sign of an in-sim HUD (although one was seen at the Le Mans event) or trackside camera angles and footage so far is bereft of any on-track opponents battling.

Moving images of vehicles using the new-build tracks not carried over from prior platforms – Portimão’s Algarve International Circuit and Fuji Speedway – must also wait for another time, evidently.

While the media has not yet driven Le Mans Ultimate in its current build, it’s set to carry across and build upon rFactor 2’s tyre model, plus add in an asynchronous car-sharing multiplayer mode. We’d be staggered if Motorsport Games’ RaceControl online ranking system wasn’t involved, either.

Let’s hope that we see more from Le Mans Ultimate in the new year, and third parties get to go hands-on before its 20th February 2024 release date.

What engine are you referring to?
If graphical, all engines, including UE, are 20+ years old.
If physical, same thing. And in iR, ACC, etc. the foundations are from the last century.

And seriously - MSG simply has no choice now but to take the way of least cost.

I mean, you're probably not interested - but I'll reply anyway.

rF2 reskin?
Yes, mostly.
From what I've been reading we could think of it as rF2++.

All the nuances, annoyances and bugs in rF2 currently is to not break legacy content - whether that be the old tracks, cars or 3rd party mods. The devs (on Discord) have talked a lot about not being able to fix x or y as that would break various other things.

So, with LMU being a different branch entirely, those things that were a problem, can now be fixed.

The narrow FOV you spoke about was for artsy effects (Dev on discord said).

The plan is to start with 2023 cars/tracks etc, and build upon it with DLC etc, possibly older cars coming (Group C for example).

MSG have done some stupid things - very questionable stupid things. I'm not a fan of the policies they undertook. But the MSG staff on the Discord are a really nice bunch, and they've worked wonders on the sim the last couple years (the new online feature being one of them).

So, I hope - I hope, it works out for them.

Actual tutorial how to sell an rFactor 2 reskin - say it's an rFactor 2 reskin. Which they did, because that's the best thing about it, and a reskin is what rF2 needs the most.

I like RF2 so i'll probably buy LMU too. BUt real question. DO ppl really want to race prototypes more than once in a month?

I get hyped by S397 producing a new sim based on the modern WEC grid, given rF2 is still my favorite sim to drive...by a country mile. Having some teases along the way is just a cherry on top. Day 1 purchase for me. If they've been able to improve upon the shortcomings of rF2 (terrible mirrors...at least in VR, no true hybrid motor integration/control, general quality of life stuff) then I'll be happier than a pig in slop. rF2 might be hit or miss based on the age of the content and who created it, but S397's newer stuff like the GTE, GT3 and endurance packs give me plenty of confidence. I can't see them butchering the tire model and general driving dynamics in the name of mass appeal, but of course won't count my chickens until they hatch.

There's no denying that they've seemingly nailed the sound of the 499P. The little bit of interior we can sneak a peak at here looks pretty detailed. Looking through the DoF blur at the wheel, looks to have a pretty detailed display with all of the information you would expect to be presented to the driver. I would love it if we get more control over LCDs and in-car displays so I don't have to bring up a fugly HUD in VR if I need some critical data.
I believe that VR is delayed, in spite of LMU being an evolution of rF2 (the Steam description seems to have dropped VR support at launch).
It will be an instant buy for me, anyhow, even if don't boot the game before VR is confirmed and available.

So from what little I've seen the game looks really promising. Sound is good and can be improved, even the physics are ok, after all it's an RF2 retouched for the better. We hope that they will be able to complete by February 20, 2024 but I highly doubt they seem very behind in their work. We will see.:thumbsup:
"physics are ok" ... lolol... man, under which rock are you living?
Even with its holes - all sims have theirs - rFactor 2's physics are second to none and, moreover, the driving experience and feel is several tiers above all other sims.
In VR the feel is so immersive that I have lifted my hand from my wheel several times to try to adjust the rear view mirror while driving... almost cried laughing and, it's not like it was an effect of being a novelty.
Last time it happened it was more than 18 months after I started driving in VR in rF2.

Maybe look forward to two years later when the game is mostly patched, the DLC is released, and you can grab the whole package on sale? That's kinda where I am right now after getting EA WRC pre-release. I have so many racing games to play, and not enough time to play them, that I don't need to jump on all the shiny new games (even though many of them look pretty awesome).
Both are not incompatible, you can be happy a game exists, because you know you'll enjoy it, even if you play to it in years. There is a ton of games which have hyped me, I still haven't played yet to many of them, but will sooner or later. That was the plan with WRC, super hyper by the content, all those stages, the handling, but I was planning to wait a few months to play to it, not only because I was anticipating the issues, but also because I just started to get into DR2.0 and wanted to spend a few months on it before switching to WRC.

I'm hyped by Le Mans Ultimate because rF2 is my goto sim and because I like WEC cars and races, but I may not buy it until a couple years, if only because I don't really simrace lately.

I can be hyped by sequels of games I've not played yet, simply because I anticipate how I'll enjoy them. I could be hyped by GTA VI while I've not played yet to IV and V (and was hyped by V). I'm hyped by Squadron 42 but may play to it in a decade, like I was hyped by Mass Effect 3 but have barely started the first one.

Well RF2 already has that so assume so. It looks a bit better than RF2, but RF2 with the latest content can look amazing anyway.
The balance between environment light and the cars' reflection and ambient occlusion seems better tuned.

This looks promising indeed. Will there be rain and intermediate weather conditions?
Of course and there are plenty of "in progress" photos showing different weather conditions.
rFactor 2 has full weather and track evolution, including a wet line, as the rubbered line will be slippery at first (currently the speed at which the rubber is washed away is being fine tuned, as its a bit too fast).
So, there is zero reasons for LMU not to have the same, but improved.

Ok boy but calm down, I know very well that the physics derives from that of rf2. I'm sure it will be a great game. I can't wait to try it.

That's [bad] news to me. Really surprised honestly. I'd be tempted to support them at launch regardless, but seeing as I don't have a monitor attached to the front of my rig these days, will probably have to hold off until they at least set a firm VR implementation date. Really disappointing to be honest, thought it was a foregone conclusion for launch at this point. Appreciate the heads up.
