Just in time for Easter, Reiza Studios has deployed an update for Automobilista 2. New to the sim are three cars that already have the v1.6 tire physics changes on board, as well as other smaller adjustments.

Another milestone update to Automobilista 2 is in the cards for this summer, as Reiza Studios Founder and Lead Developer Renato Simioni recently told us. He also mentioned a smaller update to come out before that - and this update has arrived just in time for Easter, changing the AMS2 version number to 1.5.6.1.

While not full of big, ground-breaking changes, the update does offer a small glimpse on things to come in v1.6 further down the road. It does this via three new cars that have been added via v1.5.6.1 - namely the 2024 Brazilian Stock Car Pro series as well as a revamped Formula Ultimate Gen 2.

The latter now resembles current F1 cars much more closely than the vehicle used previously. These cars already feature reworked tire phyiscs that were mentioned in the March Dev Update and will come to all cars in v1.6.

Visuals & A New Track Layout

Meanwhile, work on improving the visuals has continued. More realistic water shaders, 3D trees at numerous tracks, dust being kicked up by cars when running off the racing line or in dirty parts of a track are all part of the latest update.

And there is a new place to race, too. Well, sort of - the Betonschleife layout has been added to the 1971 Nürburgring rendition in AMS2. Previously, Reiza's loving recreation of The Green Hell as it was after its first big renovation phase featured the Norsdschleife, Südschleife and the combined Gesamtstrecke. Now, the small Betonschleife, which uses only the start/finish area with turns at either end, joins them.

Many more small changes have found their way into Automobilista 2 v1.5.6.1 as well - find the full changelog below!

This is the first time I see a sim developer apologizing to skin modders for evolving their model, which implies more work for them.

Props!
I saw that Reiza offered the revamped 3D model of the Formula Ultimate Gen 2 out in advance to skin / livery creators so they could get working prior to the official release. That's another first (to my knowledge) and so cool for devs to directly support modders so well.

New ultimate looks fantastic, but I did not expect the F-Ultimate gen 2 to feel as different as it does with this update, even with stock tuning. Not sure how much is down to the tire tweaks or just a general rework of the car, but I'm impressed. Much more driveable and easier to gauge traction throughout a corner.

If this is indicative of where the rest of the roster is heading then AMS2's trajectory is still firmly on the incline.

"Corvette C8: Extensive visual overhaul including accurate body paint colors, fully revamped lights, 3D blurred wheels, reworked cockpit textures & materials for higher detail level"

I hope they can do more of that, a lot of cars needs a better cockpit textures and visuals.

Are the new cars less slidey?
The updated formula ultimate is definitely more planted with tire performance that feels more "right." There's a much more defined feeling precipice where grip breaks away and I felt like the lead up to that edge was easier to guage at all points in throughout a corner. Whatever they have done between the tires and the car/suspension/differential is a big step in a good direction. Still more forgiving than something like the formula pro in rF2, but it doesn't feel cheesed like the previous open wheel drift machine could. Hard to say which behavior is more true to life unless some smooth brained saint wants to give me a go in a real formula 1 car.

Nice, but too much button-clicking with modern F1 and hopped into a CART instead. I wasn't always happy with the CART-physics, but with the current version they are great, so a suggestion for Reiza: don't "fix" things that aren't broken.
