Aston Martin DBS

James Bond's company car has finally hit UK shores. We get behind the wheel.

car_photo_247239_25.jpg

Who could forget 2007? Supercar fans didn’t just get a new Aston, but a new Bond motor, too. Yet this year looks set to be even better – so say hello to the first right-hand-drive example of the sensational DBS!

Powered by a 510bhp 6.0-litre V12 engine, fitted with active suspension and cloaked in a carbon fibre body, the car is not only among the most exclusive the firm has ever built, it’s also one of the most advanced.

At first glance, the DBS looks like an evolution of the established DB9. It gets bigger wheels, sculpted sills, and a more detailed nose. But it’s once the engine starts that you get the first clue to just how different the newcomer is to the DB9, as a crisp and aggressive exhaust note sounds out.

car_photo_247254_25.jpg

The clutch feels light, too, and the gearbox slides through the six ratios with ease. At low revs, the engine is responsive, yet refined. However, push the throttle to the floor, and everything changes. Pedal travel is long, but it doesn’t take much time for the DBS to gather pace and rev cleanly and quickly to its 7,200rpm limiter.

Traction control channels the V12’s performance effortlessly into the road, resulting in a 0-60mph sprint of 4.3 seconds. Top speed is a claimed 191mph. But it’s the suspension and chassis that serve up the biggest surprise. Active dampers allow the driver to choose between comfort and sport settings for the suspension at the press of a button, and mean the car rides comfortably over uneven roads.

Steering is pinpoint accurate, and thanks to grippy Pirelli tyres – specially developed for the DBS – you are never left feeling that the Aston lacks grip from the front end.

Switch to the sport mode, and the ride stiffens noticeably. The setting gives the motor greater stability on undulating roads, and helps maintain its poise over bumps, but is probably too harsh to live with on a daily basis.

But then there is the price to consider. At £165,000 the DBS is pitched towards the very top of the supercar tree. And it’s not without its flaws. Purists could argue that the rear suspension is not well enough damped, and feels floaty on uneven surfaces.

Still, the Aston has tremendous character, and begs to be driven. And frankly, we can think of few other supercars we would rather spend time with. It seems 007 agrees...

Lotus Exige goes for Cup

Lotus Exige goes for Cup glory as new firebreather cranks up the power, survey backs our air pump findings, saloon Star joins electric chargers, damage claims soar in cold snap

Lotus Exige goes for Cup glory as new firebreather cranks up the power
THE most hardcore Lotus Exige has just got even more extreme. Thanks to a revised engine management system, the Cup variant (below) now produces 257bhp from its 1.8-litre supercharged engine – an increase of 5bhp over the version it replaces. That’s enough to power the British car from 0-40mph in 4.1 seconds and on to 147mph. The Exige Cup 260 also features a new variable traction control. Initially it will only be available as a left-hand drive, but a UK model may be offered.

Survey backs our air pump findings
A STAGGERING 60 per cent of tyre pressure pumps on filling station forecourts are out of order. That’s according to motorists who took part in a recent poll by campaign group TyreSafe. The figure follows a recent Auto Express probe (Issue 994), in which 40 per cent of the airlines we checked across the UK were either faulty, inoperative or giving an incorrect reading.

Saloon Star joins electric chargers
IT looks as if Tesla Motors is charging ahead with plans for an all-new electric luxury saloon. Currently dubbed the WhiteStar, the newcomer is set to cost half the price of the US firm’s £50,000 battery-powered roadster. The sports car maker is reportedly hoping to raise funds to build a new plant in California, where production will start in 2010.

Damage claims soar in cold snap
POTHOLE damage claims went through the roof last month, latest figures reveal. Nearly 50 per cent more vehicles suffered suspension or axle damage in January alone, according to extended cover provider Warranty Direct. It says the cold spell is to blame, as rain and freezing temperatures cause potholes to open, and water seeps into the seams of the road surface.

Opel Meriva Concept

With less than a week left until the Geneva Motor Show premiere, Opel made a press release today in which announced the new Opel Meriva Concept. The concept’s main attraction is the FlexDoors system, which consists of rear-hinged rear doors that swing open toward the back of the car and the front and rear doors can also be opened independently of each other. This makes access to the car interior much easier and also enhances comfort and functionality, as the highest point of the roof ? just behind the B-pillars ? is exactly where the passengers enter and exit the vehicle.

Another feature is the U-shaped windshield, which stretches up and back over the rear passengers? heads ? echoing the Astra GTC?s panorama windshield, while the slim A-pillars and windshield pulled far down ensure plenty of light in the interior. Both elements contribute to the all-round visibility for the occupants.

Mitsubishi Lancer Prototype-S Concept

We’ce already seen the Mitsubishi Lancer Prototype-S Concept drawings and now we’ve got the first photos of the car, which is not actually a concept, but more of a pre-production version of the upcoming Lancer Ralliart, Mitsubishi hatchback competitor for the Subaru Impreza WRX. Scheduled to make world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the car is powered by EVO X’s 2.0 liter Turbo engine, delivering 240 hp and 343 Nm of torque mated to a Twin Clutch SST gearbox and a full-time 4 wheel drive featuring Mitsubishi Motors’ Active Center Differential.

But, though the numbers look good, we can’t really say we love the car. I mean, the front part is superb, but what’s with that rear part? Not cool.

Range Rover Convertibles

I found an articule of no-offical Land Rover. For that reason i dont post in in the subforum 'cars and car news'

Photos of these Range Rover Convertibles in Dubai have been popping up around the web lately but we're not sure who's producing them. They all seem to have wood bordering around the open top of the vehicles so we assume they're being produced by the same company. The bottom photo is of a L322 Range Rover but the photo on top is actually a second generation Range Rover P38 with Range Rover Sport body panels, which must have cost the owner a good amount to convert. You can view these full photos at the below.

Land Rover Defender SVX: 2008 Geneva Motor Show press release

Defender SVX special edition
While most of the 25,000 Defenders produced each year are working tools for everyone from farmers to aid agencies, the 60th anniversary SVX special edition models are the most stylish and feature-packed versions that Land Rover has ever produced.

With metallic black paintwork, the Defender SVX will be available in the UK in 90 soft-top and station wagon versions. Each model will also come fitted with an individually numbered plaque, i.e. 001. New exterior features include a restyled grille surround, tubular side-steps, alloy wheels, reinforced aluminium front undershield, clear-lens headlamps and LED reverse/rear fog lights. The soft-top model is especially eye-catching, with a metallic silver tubular cage that supports a tailor-made, removable black fabric hood.

To bring the SVX interiors right up to date, they are equipped with custom-designed Recaro front seats, distinctive alloy gear knobs, a new audio system (with subwoofer and USB socket), iPod compatability and Garmin satellite navigation.

Up to 300 SVX vehicles will be available in the UK, with a total of 1800 produced worldwide. Deliveries to customers will start from early summer for soft-tops and later in the summer for station wagons. Prices start from £30,495.
