Lewis Hamilton has stormed to his 9th pole of the season after a thoroughly dominated qualifying display which saw Hamilton out pace his team mate by almost six tenths of a second.

The first session kicked off with several drivers complaining of a general lack of rear grip, most notably Grosjean who failed to post a time within the 107% mark on his first run, whilst Rosberg also struggled with severe understeer in his Mercedes.

However whilst some floundered others thrived as the two McLarens sat 3rd and 6th after the first set of runs, whilst Ricciardo gave Hamilton something to worry about with a time just four tenths down.

But as teams resorted to the much quicker soft tyre the balance shifted again to Button's dismay as an ERS issue on his final lap cost him deary as he could only manage 16th. He was joined in the Q1 drop zone by the two Saubers of Ericsson and Nasr, whilst Roberto Merhi beat Will Stevens to 19th place in the battle of the Manors.

A quiet start to Q2 was soon ended after Fernando Alonso's McLaren brought out the red flag after it gave up the ghost at the pit exit before the Spaniard, with the help of several stewards, managed to push his car back into the pitlane in a spirited attempt to rejoin the session. Unfortunately though the problem turned out to be terminal for McLaren, putting both of their drivers out of qualifying.

Minus Fernando's heroics Q2 passed without major incident, as Maldonado, Perez, Carlos Sainz Jr., and Nico Hulkenberg all fell on their respective swords and missed out in a place in Q3.

But in Q3 it was business as usual as Lewis Hamilton wrapped up pole position with a half a second advantage over his team mate Nico Rosberg. Behind the two Mercedes was Sebastian Vettel in his Ferrari whilst Ricciardo backed up his good practice form with 4th on the grid.
