Guy Ligier has sold his team to 4-time World Champion Alain Prost who drove for Ligier from 1989 to 1993, winning the drivers' World Championship in 1989 and 1990. Since Prost's retirement Ligier has been in steady decline but looks to return to the top of the sport with The Professor in charge.
To help with this target the team bought the 1995 CART champion and 4-time F1 Grand Prix winner Jacques Villeneuve from underperforming Team Lotus and also signed a works engine deal with Peugeot. Olivier Panis continues in the team for what will be his fifth season with the French team.
