Fernando Alonso to miss the Monaco GP to do the Indy 500

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso will miss this year's Monaco Grand Prix so he can race in the Indianapolis 500.

The double world champion has the full approval and support of McLaren and engine partner Honda, who are having a difficult season in Formula 1.

Alonso, 35, will race for the Honda-powered Andretti team, and the car will be branded a McLaren.

McLaren are yet to decide who will replace him in Monaco, but Britain's Jenson Button is a possibility.

He wants to join Graham Hill with the triple crown. We all know he wants to do Le Mans anyway. Looks like Jenson will get a run in the McLaren then

Fernando is frustrated, this is one way to get his spirits up, let him get in a car that has a chance to win a race. He'll only have two weeks to get comfortable with the car, Turn 1, driving in traffic, learning race strategy, and countless other things that are different from anything he's experienced in F1. I would bet on Fernando absorbing all of this quickly and being competitive. Andretti has a four-car team already so there will be plenty of setup data to go around. That will help him stay off the wall.
