Cammus C5 & Nascar 2003

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help here. I just got a Cammus C5 and it works fine on AC, ACC, AMS2, etc, but not in Nascar 2003. It doesn't see the wheel (the pedals are fine) so I can't calibrate. Using my google-fu I've tried a few things like making sure I only have three controllers, switching drivers, but no joy. I remember having to calibrate my previous wheel, a G29, in joy.cpl so I tried that again here and noticed that it thinks the wheel base has the XY axis, not the wheel itself - when I go to calibrate the wheel, the XY doesn't move, but when I tried same with the wheel base it did. I wonder if that's the issue. If so, how would I go about getting this wheel to work in Nr2ks?

update: I think this is related to the amount of axes on the wheel. I configured Grand Prix Legends just fine. The wheel shows up as axis 8 there.
Still no joy with Nascar 200 though. How can I tell it which axis to look for?
