My avatar has vanished and I'm unable to add a replacement.

Has this function been disabled for any reason?

We haven't deleted any avatars so maybe you have done that yourself You can upload a new one here: http://www.racedepartment.com/forum/account/avatar

Make sure the image is around 200x200px in size so it can also show on the membercard

It´s locked to 19.5kb only :S

I can´t even get a .jpg image that is 200px wide to 19.5kb.
All that is left is massive pixels

You could:

-Shrink the image
-Save it as .gif or low quality .jpg

its 19.5kb for a reason. Xenforo displays avatars as thread icons. You can imagine how the page loading speed will be for people with slow connections if we allow avatars up to 1mb

This one is 150px and 30+ kb.

19.5 seems to be a little extreme I can´t get that picture lower then 31kb in .jpg

Here it is in 47kb

50kb seems like a more reasonable figure, that´s only 0.050 of 1mb

Making the picture even smaller like 100px makes little to no difference.

That one now works, and others of similar sizes don't? Bizarre, no clue how it would do that.

BTW, doesn't look too good for 42kB, give the link to the original, and I'll save it better

Maybe Bram or someone else was changing it in the settings just when you were trying it? No clue

Anyway, 500 pixels should be fine regardless. The avatar upload thing even says at least 200px wide; 500 isn't that extravagant. You'll hit the size limit first in most cases.

I doubt that he seems very firm on the 19.5kb

tried again and it allows 42kb but not 37kb Interesting to see what is causing that.

My guess, is that 42kb on 500pixels / 2 = 21kb on 250 pixels. So 200 pixels is less than 20kb. (This might not be the right thing when resizing the image, but the coding of the page, can be sat up to read it that way).
