2008 World Touring Car Championship

race2 awesome

I hope you all had time to watch the races at Brno, race 2 in particular was the wildest bit of racing I've seen in a day or two. The guys were really taking advantage of the wide track, going 5 (!!!) abreast into corners.
Poor Tombo was kicked and spun again, just like in Valencia, his red Honda seems to attract opposition ...
If you have a chance of downloading a vid of this race somewhere, do it, it's f.... brilliant!

Poulsen joins WTCC in Estoril

Danish racing driver Kristian Poulsen will make his WTCC debut in the next meeting at Estoril. Poulsen, 32-year old from Flensborg, will be at the wheel of a BMW 320si car run by his own team Poulsen Motorsport; it is the same machine he normally drives in the Danish Touring Car Championship.
A former rally driver, Poulsen switched to racing only at the beginning of the 2007 season; however, he quickly established himself and his own team in the national Touring Car championship. During the past season he entered two BMW cars, for himself and former DTM ace Kurt Thiim, who claimed two victories. At the end of the year, Poulsen took part in the FIA European Touring Car Cup at Adria, achieving a brilliant third place in the Super 2000 class.
For the current season, the team has signed the reigning Danish champion and winner of the FIA European Cup Michel Nykjær, former Danish champion Jesper Sylvest and former WTCC regular Emmet O'Brien alongside Poulsen.
Poulsen's participation in the Portuguese event is only the first one that has been planned to pave the team's approach to a full commitment in next year's WTCC; further participations at Brands Hatch and Oschersleben will follow

Thompson Fastest In Monza Test

For the first time since they joined the championship, James Thompson and his N.technology Honda Accord Euro R set the WTCC pace.
"We had a very good day," said Thompson. "We didn't carry out as many laps as other teams because we were making big changes on the car between the runs but it was worth it. We take this result as a good representation of the progress we're making. Step-by-step we will be back at the level we are used to competing at."
During yesterday's official test session in Monza, the last of the four scheduled for the season, Thompson clocked a fastest lap of 2:00.918, posted during the morning session of a hot Italian Summer day, with temperatures in the high 30s C.
Front wheel-drive cars emerged as the fastest along the Autodromo. Tom Coronel and his SUNRED petrol-powered SEAT León set the best lap in the afternoon; however, the Dutchman's 2:00.940 remained 0.022 seconds off Thompson's best.
Chevrolet's Alain Menu completed a lap of 2:00.946, only a further four thousandths of a second adrift. Andy Priaulx was the best of the BMW men, setting the fourth fastest lap of 2:01.214, just ahead of Jordi Gené (2:01.298) in the best of the SEAT León TDI cars.
Sixteen drivers took part in the test, with 13 of them covered by the same second.
In the afternoon, Turkish driver Aytaç Biter, a former runner up in the national Formula 3 championship, replaced his fellow countryman Ibrahim Okyay at the wheel of the Borusan Otomotiv Motorsport BMW car. Biter is due to drive the team's second car in the WTCC events at Brands Hatch and Oschersleben.

MARRAKECH GP JOINS 2009 WTCC CALENDAR
The FIA World Touring Car Championship will expand to Africa in 2009. With the addition of a race meeting in Marrakech, Morocco, the world championship is now set to visit four continents next year: Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia.

Morocco’s first international Grand Prix in more than 50 years was launched yesterday during a crowded press conference at Marrakech’s El Saadi Palace. The historical city will host the WTCC on a brand new temporary street circuit in the heart of the red city on May 3rd, 2009.

The Marrakech WTCC event will be the first international car race in Morocco after the 1958 Formula One Grand Prix in Casablanca.

“This will be everybody's grand prix. We all have to work together to prove the world that Morocco can build a street circuit and organise a motorsport event according to the FIA standards. And to do this we need to mobilize all our resources. This event will have an unprecedented impact on Moroccan economy and tourism,” said the President of the Marrakech Grand Prix Ali Horma.

It`s gonna be a street circuit and is still in the development stage.

" The plans were introduced today at Marrakech's El Saadi Palace. The city will host a brand new street circuit which will be temporary. This is the first international race event in Morocco since the Formula One Grand Prix in Casablanca in 1958.

Lada free to score points

The two Lada 110 of Russan Bears Motorsport have been declared eligible to score points in the World Touring Car Championship.
Drivers Jaap van lagen and Viktor Shapovalov have not been able to score points in the three previous races that they have taken part in.
This was because the intake and outlet ports of the cylinder heads were not conform to the homologation form.
Lada have now amended the Group N homologation form of the Lada 110. Because of this the car is according the rules and the FIA Touring Car Bureau have decided to allow the cars to score points in the Independents and Team-championship of the WTCC.

The Bulgarian drives a BMW 320si for the team Petrol GT Racing and he is the first ever Bulgarian in the WTCC.
Tanev competes in the Bulgarian Touring Car Championship and he currently heads the points.
The BMW 320si that Tanev will drive at Oschersleben is the previous test car of BMW Team Italy Spain.
Tanev drove the car for the first time last week in Adria with help from BMW Team Italy Spain.
The plan for the team is to drive the races at Imola and Monza later this year.

Toyota set to join the WTCC

TouringCarTimes has learned that the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota could be represented on the FIA WTCC grid in 2009.
TouringCarTimes has received information and images of the new S2000 spec Toyota Auris T-Sport, which is expecting to make its race debut at the Ochesleben round of the WTCC in August.

German ADAC Procar Team Geipel Motorsport have built the new Auris T-Sport with the view of entering a two two-car team in the 2009 WTCC.

The team is currently leading the German Procar Championship with a S2000 spec Toyota Corolla T-Sport for its driver Philip Geipel.

Although no official comment has been made by the team, initial tests with the new model have reportedly been favourable.
Final aerodynamic adjustments are expected to be made before the car is put through some serious testing ahead of its debut in August.

Hmm that would be nice to see Toyota come. The car looks small but ok, but it has the five doors that WTCC cars need. But i hope they create some more body on the car

Wow that is exactly what the WTCC needs at the moment. An extra car and with the Volvo C30 they have a real strong addition to the excisting field! Wow!

The new Volvo C30 in Super 2000 is ready to make its maiden appearance in the FIA WTCC at Brands Hatch,
The Swedish car entered by the Volvo Olsbergs Green Racing and driven by Robert Dahlgren is fitted with a bio-ethanol fuel-powered engine. Because the car runs in the Swedish Touring Car Championship on the basis of national homologation, it should be admitted to take part at Brands Hatch with a special authorization by the FIA Touring Car Bureau and therefore Dahlgren will not be eligible to score championship points.
During their current STCC season, Dahlgren and his Volvo C30 have claimed three pole positions so far and are lying 11th in the Drivers' Championship.
The Volvo team had already made a one-off appearance in last year's WTCC meeting at Anderstorp. Their plans are to join the championship again in Monza with two cars for Dahlgren and his STCC team-mate Tommy Rustad from Norway.
