It is extremely pleasing to see that the new chassis brought a performance boost. But Cosworth should work on these oil leak problems and find a solution. A chance of solid points was destroyed today.

Theodore
We are very happy to finally get through pre-qualification after few close loses. No we will try to get 11th or 9th in order to avoid pre-quali in the second part of the season.
Question: if alfa romeo continues to dnf in next to races and I get at least 1 finish. Does that count as me having better second result and being ahead?

Toleman
We would like to announce that Larry Perkins will be driving our second car alongside Hans Binder. We hope that he can provide us the performances that are expected of this car.

1981 Monaco Grand Prix

It's that time of the year again, time for the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix! Arrows' Jacques Laffite was the winner here last year but so far this season he has been unable to seriously challenge McLarens and Tyrrells for the top spot. Coming into this race, all five races this season have been won by McLaren or Tyrrell drivers as the two teams lead both championships.

The first driver change of the season occurred too right after the previous round. There were rumours that one of the Toleman drivers had run out of sponsorship money. Hans Binder, who raced for Arrows last year, was initially suspected as the one but after all Derek Warwick was confirmed to be the one with nothing left in his pockets. Warwick, who had raced for Toleman already in the 1980 European F2 Championship, was replaced by Australian Larry Perkins despite the fact that Warwick's 10th place at Belgium might get the team out of pre-qualifying for the second half of the season.

Pre-qualifying
Derek Warwick
had been clearly the best guy out there in the last few pre-qualifyings by finishing in the top-2 the last three weekends. The young Englishman clearly has a lot of potential in him but nevertheless he was replaced by Larry Perkins. This proved to be a not so good decision as Toleman failed to progress only for the third time this season.

Instead, it was Theodore and Osella teams that clocked in the fastest times. In fact there never even was much doubt of who was going to qualify as the two teams topped the charts right from the go. Rupert Keegan was the fastest one as the next three came within 0,128 seconds from his time. Hans-Joachim Stuck in fifth was already half a second slower.

Qualifying
There was no doubt of the pole sitter today as last year's winner Jacques Laffite crushed the rest of the field and took the pole position with an unbelievale gap of over half a second. McLaren's Keke Rosberg was second fastest. Third fastest was Fittipaldi's Patrick Depailler who lead the field of numerous unexpected performances. Hoffmann in fourth continued his fine form but the two red cars behind him in the third row were quite a surprise! Nelson Piquet and Carlos Reutemann finally found some speed and were expecting great things from the race. Tyrrells, Mansell and Williamses completed the top-11.

Behind the top-6 teams (except Fittipaldi's Tambay who was down in 18th) everyone else was over a second slower than Laffite. Lotus' Jean-Pierre Jarier, a former podium finisher here back in 1974, was 12th, leading the way of Ligiers, Shadows, Renaults, Wolves, Alfa Romeos and Theodores. Behind all of them were the poor Osellas of Chico Serra and Beppe Gabbiani who were unable to qualify for the race.

Race

Rosberg snatched the lead at the start as the Arrows duo of Laffite and Hoffmann settled in behind him. Piquet got up to fourth but the best started of the race was Scheckter who was fifth. Depailler dropped from third to sixth and got Pironi, Reutemann, Mansell and de Cesaris behind him. Williamses got a difficult start to the Grand Prix as Villeneuve too got past them.

Villeneuve couldn't hold on to his hard earned 11th place long however as his gearbox failed on lap 2. Similar gearbox problems hit Scheckter and Piquet's cars too seconds later. The retirements helped the top three to get away as the drivers behind had to dodge the slow-moving cars. All this had helped especially Elio de Angelis, who was on the rise after the tough start. He had already made it past his teammate and on lap 16 was able to make another pass, this time on de Cesaris for 8th position. Mansell however was over seven seconds ahead.

Pit stops began on lap 22 of 76 when Pironi and Depailler drove in to the pits. Laffite was another driver opting to pit earlier than the rest of the field. Jarier pitted too after encountering a problem with throttle. Pit crew fixed it masterfully and the Frenchman was able to continue.

RIght after Laffite's stop, Monaco claimed its next victim as Rosberg's Cosworth blew up after Tabac corner. Hoffmann inherited the lead while Laffite, Depailler and Pironi were fighting for seventh with yet-to-pit Arnoux. Depailler though wasn't able to keep up to speed after he started to lose his brakes. A quick stop for repairs fixed the issue but the Fittipaldi driver was very far back in 18th.

Mansell was now driving in second while Reutemann, de Cesaris and de Angelis were having tight battle over third place. Fierce battles and tight streets of Monaco only have one possible outcome and on lap 30 the unfortunate happened. Ligier's De Cesaris tried to make a move on Reutemann into St Devote, made a contact and de Angelis behind collected both of them. All three were out of the race!

Hoffmann lead the race all the way until lap 36 when Laffite passed him for the lead. The Brazilian pitted on the same lap, dropping to fourth behind Pironi and Mansell. Alboreto in fifth pitted too, handing the last points scoring positions briefly to Prost and Cheever. Arnoux was 8th while the battle for 9th was on between Thackwell, Depailler, Jarier, Tambay and Cogan.

By lap 50 everyone had done their final pit stops and Arrows lead the way with Laffite in front. Unfortunately the 1-2 lead didn't hold on for long as Laffite's gearbox broke down in the tunnel on lap 53. Suddenly Hoffmann was again leading the race but Pironi and Mansell were only seven seconds behind and catching quickly. Alboreto was a comfortable fourth while Cheever and Arnoux were battling it out for fifth position. Prost and Depailler were around four seconds behind the duo but the latter in particular looked racey out there.

With some help from Tambay (who was being lapped), Pironi and Mansell were able to catch Hoffmann by lap 63. There would be an exciting three-way battle for the win on the last 13 laps! Behind the leaders the fastest guy was Patrick Depailler who had passed Prost for 7th and was now trying his best in finding a way past Arnoux and Cheever. In the end, Depailler was able to make the passes on the Renault and Lotus drivers and finished fifth. In the lead however, the chasing drivers weren't able to finish their charge. Pironi tried and tried but couldn't find a way through Hoffmann and even had to let Mansell past in the process. All the credit to Arrows' Ingo Hoffmann though. A marvellous weekend and a faultless drive earned him his first GP win and what could be the better place to do it than Monaco?

The development market for the seventh race is open! You have until Friday 8:00 EET to make/modify your investments.

Got to admit, somehow I wasn't at all surprised that de Cesaris was crashing out there
Nor am I surprised that he has retired five times in a row this season :roflmao:

Arrows
Good and not so good.
It's great to be finding the pace again, not only in Lafitte but also in Hoffmann. But it is a shame that Lafitte retired definetly, that could have been our first 1-2 that got the championship challenge really going for Arrows.
But nonetheless, can't complain about a win. I am seriously considering now to keep a pay-driver in my team for longer than one season :roflmao:

Theodore
We made a great result in qualifying and manged to get both cars into race. Unfortunately Keegan managed just to repeat his 12th place and we will need to give our best shot in next race to get that top 10 finish and avoid pre-quali in second part of the season.

Fittipaldi
We are delighted to see Patrick do so well here, seems he really found the pace which is good to see. The chassis is developping nicely and we're working to get the other Patrick in the point more regularly too

McLaren
Was a great show of pace today, shame for Keke that his engine let go, but another sterling effort from Nigel is great to see. We'll look to build on the result in the coming rounds.
