Watch: Was GT7 the Right Choice for the Olympic Esports Series?

The Olympic Games are one of the biggest sports event in the world, and in 2023, a dedicated Esports Olympics were held for the first time in Singapore. Motorsport and sim racing were part of the event, using Gran Turismo 7 - but was the title the right choice to represent the discipline?

On paper, the choice makes sense: One of the best-known racing franchises was chosen to represent sim racing in the Olympic Esports Series. The game is very accessible and cherished by many racing fans who own a PlayStation 5, and it provided a good show in Singapore. Emily "Emree" Jones was present at the event - and wonders whether or not GT7 was the best title to use.

With great accessibility in mind, there Emily also discusses a few downsides that were not necessarily rooted in the game - like the timing of informing drivers about tire wear and fuel consumption multipliers. A short summary of the event quickly leads to her conclusion of it having been fun and a good showing for sim racing as a discipline - but you will have to watch the rest of the video to find out the answer to the question asked above.

Interestingly, Assetto Corsa Competizione was the title of choice for the esports portion of the 2022 FIA Motorsport Games, which similarly saw sim racers compete for their respective countries. James Baldwin took the gold for the United Kingdom, with Chris Harteveld (Netherlands) and Alberto García (Spain) completing the podium at Circuit Paul Ricard.

Your Thoughts

I don't have time to watch but on the surface, no it's not great. If sim racing is to b represented at the 'olympic' level then it has to be something more deeply rooted in simulation. Maybe gt7 is more accessible to the masses but the olympics is not accessible to the masses, just to the elite. That may lower the player base somewhat but it's not cheap to be an athlete and dedicate the time/expenses.
I do think that for something like the 'olympics' the drivers should be on even playing field as far as equipment while racing in olympic events. This again is like other events where the sporting equipment is all heavily regulated.
So maybe the barrier to entry is a bit higher for a reasonable spec pc to run a better simulation title but it can't be something closer to an arcade title unless you wipe out the olympic moniker at the same time.

I did not know we had Olympic Esports events....... So glad I missed out on that no need for RD to remind me ;)

Introduction of simracing in the Olympics was at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Held in 2021 due to the COVID pandemic. They used GT Sports for that first event. Coincidence: game studio Polyphony Digital is also based in Tokyo. Now I'm not saying I know anything about the business side of things, but I would like to assume PD made a long term agreement with the IOC which they conveniently piloted in Tokyo. For 2023, did IOC/FIA openly ask other simracing studio's? Otherwise I doubt there was a 'choice'.

So do the Olympic rules of being Non professional at the Esport thing apply? thereby removing all of those famous names that earn their money by streaming their Sim Racing efforts.
and, had anyone suggested other E-sports like... Unreal Tournament, Pong or even Skyrim speed running and virtual darts?

I'm sorry but playing a computer game is not what I think Olympics should be about. I have nothing against dedicated events for esports but Olympics ? Nope.
That time unfortunately passed with traditional olympic sports being replaced to make room for ... not even sure the best way to describe them , hobbies, past times, recreation.

It really depends on how it was marketed...

If it was marketed as the Olympic Esports racing series, then GT7 is ok as it's a popular title...

But if it's marketed as the Olympic Esports SIM racing series... Then they might as well of used Mario Kart...

My dog can be the new olympic esport champion with GT7 :roflmao:
No, they can't. You dog wouldn't even be able to hold Kylian's rear bumper for a lap... because I certainly can't!

It was just called the Olympic Esports Series with no specific focus on racing. Gran Turismo 7 was geniunely one of the best and more serious competitions at the event. Look at some of these oddballs;

• Archery (Tic Tac Bow),
• Baseball (WBSC eBASEBALL™: POWER PROS),
• Chess (Chess.com)
• Cycling (Zwift)
• Dance (Just Dance)
• Motor sport (Gran Turismo)
• Sailing (Virtual Regatta)
• Shooting (ISSF Challenge featuring Fortnite)
• Tennis (Tennis Clash)
• Taekwondo (Virtual Taekwondo)

There were maybe four "good" Esports at the event; Power Pros, Chess, Zwift, and Gran Turismo. Five if you consider using Fortnite's engine for shooting legit.

I think the "non Professional" aspect of the olympics was gone a while ago, pro golfers, pro tennis players, pro footballers.

Break dancing is in for 2024. How on earth is that a sport? I'm wondering what's next, the birdy song dance?

I guess that the old saying "don't give up your day job" takes on a different meaning for Olympians now... I'm sad!

Which is pretty much a description for computer games. But ultimately you're right. Since Olympics have been watered down over the years it would fit right in.

Oh, is that a thing again? Thought that was dead for decades.

Overall those are all (I think futile) attempts to attract younger audiences.

Why not? Archery is olympic, curling is olympic, bowling was olympic, croquet was olympic, why not an esports that requires skills as well.

Edit: Ballooning was olympic in 1900 as was Live Pigeon Shooting, Gliding was olympic in 1936 :)

I'm a real simracer, well, I mean, I love it, it's my passion, I dream about it at night.
I don't like GT because for me, in my opinion, it's not a real simulation, except at the graphical level, but I repeat it's my opinion.
Except that the Olympic Games are probably not looking for a piloting simulation, they are probably looking for a video game that requires mastery and that can be played by as many players as possible, so that there is enthusiasm among the many spectators who know the game, and also that there are as many competitors as possible, because the more there are, the more "aliens", "extraterrestrials" there will be, as we find in all the competitions that bring together a large number of people.
One day I watched gun shooting at the Olympics for 15 minutes, it was a long time ago, it probably doesn't exist anymore, but what the hell am I bored!!!
So I would have preferred a magnificent competition with AMS2 in VR (I love it!!!).... Well, ok, I'm leaving... I would have preferred ACC, IRacing, rFactor 2... or to please to a "friend" who hates AMS2, we could have had the Grand Simulator F1 2023 (it seems that it is a simulator)....
Well, we could have had F1 2023 at the Olympics, we had a narrow escape!!!!

tbh this is true, there's been some truly bizarre olympic events.
