The Nordschleife In Racing Games Used To Be An Even Bigger Deal

With the Green Hell for Assetto Corsa Competizione around the corner, the hype is high. Having the Nordschleife in racing games used to be an even bigger deal, though.

For the longest time, having the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in Assetto Corsa Competizione was unthinkable. Then, the 24-hour race at the ‘Ring became part of the IGTC schedule starting in 2024, opening the door for the most-requested track to finally be added to ACC. The wait will be over on April 1, as we recently found out and developer Kunos Simulazioni subsequently confirmed.

Many sim racers cannot wait – and rightfully so. Generally considered to be the premier GT3 simulator, ACC having the Nordschleife means bringing together what should be together for many. Rewinding the clock 20 to 25 years, however, and any game having the track was a much bigger deal.

And it has to be said: The iconic circuit is still a challenge to create for a sim racing title as well. Just ask Kunos' Executive Manager Marco Massarutto, whose reaction to the unexpected license materializing for Assetto Corsa Competizione was "oh my god, not now, not now".

These days, the Nordschleife is a bit like a seal of quality for racing simulators. No matter what series or era a title covers, one of the first questions that pops up seems to be “Does it have Nordschleife, though?”. The 20+-kilometer behemoth is regarded as one of the biggest challenges in sim racing, much like in real racing.

Nordschleife in Racing Games: Grand Prix Legends Pulls It Off In ’98​

In the late 1990s, however, this was quite different. Getting a track of this length into a game was an immense challenge with the hardware available at the time. Remember 2000’s Le Mans 24 Hours on the original PlayStation? That had a shortened version of the Circuit de La Sarthe in it, even though that was about 7 kilometers shorter than the Nordschleife.


Naturally, that meant that if there was any chance of having a virtual Nordschleife, it would have had to be on PC. Enter Grand Prix Legends: The 1998 cult classic portrayed the 1967 Formula One season, which, of course, included the German Grand Prix in the picturesque Eifel mountains. Not only did the game feature realistic driving physics, but also a full-length Nordschleife as it would have been in 1967. As accurate as 1998 allowed, of course.

This marked the first time that the track made an appearance via an accurate representation, full length and all, in a racing game. GPL required a high-end PC of the time to run properly, obviously, but it laid the groundwork for this. Considering the driving physics and the track itself, the game was likely the ultimate challenge in racing games at the time.

PS2 & Xbox Make Console Versions Possible​

Just a few years later, consoles were catching up. Both the PlayStation 2 and the all-new Xbox upped the game in terms of performance, making it possible to have the Nordschleife on much more accessible systems.


The first game to include a full version of the Green Hell on consoles was one that tends to get overlooked these days. Project Gotham Racing 2 led the way in this regard on Xbox, having been released in 2003. The Nordschleife in PGR 2 was not super accurate, being wider in most places, with some of the elevation changes being off as well. But it did what seemed impossible just a few years earlier.

However, the console Nordschleife most seem to remember came to PlayStation 2 instead, courtesy of Gran Turismo 4. The game released in late 2004 in Japan and early 2005 in North America and Europe, and the arrival of the Nordschleife on PS2 was one of its main draws at the time. It was much more accurate than the PGR version, and a very impressive recreation of the infamous circuit for the time.

Nordschleife in Racing Games: Countless Examples Available​

Since then, countless other games and simulations have followed suit. Many of them feature the ‘Ring as first-party content, but modded versions are available for seemingly every PC title. rFactor, GTR2, F1 Challenge 99-02, even BeamNG.drive have or had versions available, just to name a few.

Today, any sim that is not focused on a single series feels incomplete to many if it does not have the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in it. As one of the most popular sims out there today, ACC joining the ranks of those titles that have it certainly is a big deal – and possibly the most eagerly anticipated DLC release of 2024.

My first experience with the Nordschleife came on PlayStation 2 driving Gran Turismo 4.
It was not love at first sight, I eventually found pleasure at the Nordschleife much latter, when I rediscovered it in VR in Assetto Corsa. Before VR, I had not idea what the big noise about that track was about.
If the ACC version is anything like any other track in ACC for me, I aspect to almost rediscover the Nordschleife, the attention to details, the lightening and atmosphere in ACC is very special to me and give me a higher level of immersion than any other of my SIM.
 
Modded GPL above, it didn't look anywhere like that out of the box :-D

It's also worth mentioning the GTR Evolution pack for Race 07 being the first of the more modern PC sim versions of the track, using the rFactor 1 engine.

There are a lot of Nordschleife on the PC, even without mods, I count 21 games with it, 22 when it's added to ACC. I'll be comparing them all at some point.

Plus there was World of Speed, the cancelled free-to-play arcade variant of Project CARS, plus Monaco Grand Prix Racing Simulation 2 had a shortened vintage track based on the shape of the 'Ring, with different scenery.

For us that grew up in the uk through the 90s and into the early 2000s that had an interest with games and car programs on tv I think what really threw the track into the limelight for us was Top Gear when Clarkson took the Jaguar S Type round trying to beat 10 minutes for a lap. Then obviously the release of Gran Turismo 4 with the track being the highlight of the game. That was my first experience of it and always loved the challenge of trying to get round it and not crash. Which was never that successful because it took me a fair while to memorise the track.
 
I first drove on the Nordschleife in Project Gotham Racing 2 in 2003. Personaaly I feel that the track had no bussiness being in a street-racing game. PGR 2 would have been better if an extra city with 8-10 circuits was included instead. The Nordschleife is a good Time-Trial track but it's not a good track for racing in my opinion. The track is not as good as the hype would lead people to believe. Even in the real-world races like the ADAC Nordschleife 24 hours although it's a classic event how many great races has there been? I can't remember any to be honest.

Back then, I was 8 years old and mainly played on N64. There was no vintage stuff in the N64 version. Guess I should try to find the PC(?) version to try one time then!
 
I still don’t see what’s the big deal with that track Yes, it has its historical importance, and I am sure it’s an interesting challenge for programmers, but it does nothing for me when it comes to sim racing. With so many corners, it almost feels more like a rally track than a circuit. I’m not planning to buy this DLC.

I remember how awesome but frustrating the 4 sections in Forza (OG XB/gamepad) were to drive (Porsche 911 GT1?) as I did not have an track knowledge. When I got my wheel for PC, I got into sim racing and basically spend all my time downloading car mods for AC and driving them on Nords. Still it is my go to track to just let of some steam by hotlapping or racing any version of it.

That is indeed an interesting comparison that I simply was not aware of. Unfortunately, it is almost seven years old at this point, so a ton of Nordschleife versions that would need to be added to be up to date :(
 
And I still don't see what's the big deal with tracks in the first place. Rally stages and just plain old roads are much more interesting to me. Sure, it's not advised to take a good run on a public road, but that is exactly what sims are for...
 
I feel like it's more of a prerequisite for a sim nowadays. The way having Ferrari or Porsche sports cars. Was a big deal when not every game used to have them. That is not to say I am not excited to have it in ACC - because it's ACC, and I enjoy the driving model. I look forward to "mastering" the circuit to my standards.

With most tracks, there's a first impression that's stayed with me, and sometimes it influences the way I approach the turns (often to my detriment). For the Nordschleife the image I have is of Gran Turismo 4, driving what I suppose is the "Formula Gran Turismo".

But wait a minute... It's not exactly my first impression. That would have to have been Grand Prix Legends. But it could well be that I never made it past the "Flugplatz".
 
Interesting article. I remember driving the Nords in GPL many years ago, really tough. To me one of the most important versions of the Nordschleife so far is the AC version, which contributed a lot to the success of AC, showcased its quality as a driving simulator, and is lots of fun to drive on. This is also why there is so much expectation about the ACC version, because hopefully it will build upon the already great AC version.

Change my mind: 99 times out of 100, if someone says they dislike Nordschleife, it's simply because they suck at it. Other than Isle of Man, there's no more difficult track to master. It takes patience and repetition, things most people can't be bothered with.

That's not why I don't like it. It's because I just don't like that type of extra-long track where it takes 10 minutes for a single lap. The Nords layout simply does nothing for me.

And for the record: I suck at *every* track, not just the Nords. :D

Yep that's my earlier screenshot comparison, I'll be doing a video version at some point in future; you can see MGPRS2 track in my screenshots though.

It's hard to get MGPRS2 to work on PC, easier to track down the free Kellogg's Frosties Gr-r-rand Prix re-textured version, which you might find if you read the comments under my YouTube video about it Video here

The reason why it's still a big deal, especially for Assetto fans, is the fact that we are basically waiting for 9 years to drive at the Ring with our teammates.

That basic and frankly BS method of adding more drivers to a car was always total crap and the Ring is obviously that symbol of endurance racing, so many of us were left disappointed when Kunos decided not to expand on AC's feature set back in the days. (This coming from a former AC beta tester, I can assure you, we did beg for many more features :roflmao:).

Nevertheless, I did countless hours and solo endurances throughout 2015 but soon afterwards I kinda lost interest in the Ring from a driving perspective. Solo never felt quite right to me. So now we are finally getting a Ring for proper endurance purposes in the Assetto universe and I couldn't be happier.

P.S. anybody remembers the crappy version we drove here in the months before the release? :roflmao::poop::roflmao:
Oh and then there came the first RD event on the just released Ring and in lap 1 @Bram was right behind me telling me on Teamspeak that I took the Karussel very nicely .... little did he know that I had been driving on the Ring for a few days already. :laugh::roflmao:

I remember the time when people were talking if laserscanned nordschleife was EVER possible in any sim ever. People were thinking it is too costly, takes too long to make and no sim dev is going to even take the risk. Now almost all sims have it. I'm glad it has happened and I think nords being a normal thing is a good indicator of the progress we have had with sims.
