rFactor 2 has recently received its latest update bringing great improvements to the AI. The drop also includes the new Gen 3 Formula E car.

Now in mid-April, Studio 397 decided it would be the perfect time to release its newest update for rFactor 2. The simulator has certainly made strides in recent updates and this particular changelog is no different.

Whilst the headlining act must be the first simracing representation of the Gen 3 Formula E car, the update brings countless improvements throughout the sim. From modding support to bug fixes, it mostly appears to be a case of housekeeping until you reach the AI section which has seemingly been overhauled.

Formula E Gen 3 in rF2

rFactor 2 has long been the definitive Formula E simulator. The original car and many tracks have featured in the game since the series' origins. And with the Accelerate esports series putting simracers in the electric single seaters, it's no surprise that the sim now has the 2023 model.

The Gen 3 car is a million miles away from the Gen 2 car concept. It's a lightweight, small chassis made to look rapid on TV coverage. It skips and dances over street circuit bumps and appears to be agile in the corners. One thing racers will have to get used to is the lack of physical rear brakes which are indeed modelled in rF2.

This year's Q1 update brought many hybrid powertrain improvements for the BTCC cars, and this latest Q2 update focuses on EV functionality. UI and HUD elements will allow players to keep track of their energy usage whilst brake usage will be a difficult skill to perfect in order to regenerate in an efficient way.

This is something the AI is also trained to do in a long list of offline racing improvements.

AI improvements galore

Whilst an AI that can manage energy in the Formula E car is impressive, the way it now battles is even more so. Throughout the history of simracing, very few titles have produced capable AI in racecraft scenarios. But it seems rFactor 2 is on the right track.

AI improvements in Q2 release.jpg

The latest update brings in many changes to how the AI interacts with other cars. From making better decisions on the brakes to actively looking for better exits when making its way through traffic. According to the change log, the AI will now think about the danger involved in overtaking manoeuvres on the brakes. Whilst it will freely go side-by-side on the straights, it may decide to back out of a move on the brakes into a corner. This should produce fewer incidents where previous versions of the game would become blood baths.

The new improvements certainly work well in multiclass scenarios. Faster cars treat slower classes with respect as they work their way through the field. Not trying to send a risky move up the inside, the AI now often backs off into a corner to carry momentum and make a move on corner exit. This is what real life prototype racers in IMSA and the WEC do when battling through GT traffic.

All in all, this update looks small when compared to the major overhauls of recent releases. But the changes address issues that will now give the game great offline playability. Furthermore, with more and more great updates coming to rF2, it shows that the game is finally nearing a place where the developers are happy with its current state.

What do you make of the latest rFactor 2 update?

tell me where is the minecraft ? or do you play at 800x600 ultra low ?
yes this looks amazing, but me at 1080p looks crap, other sim look ok,hell can even get ACC to look decent, me personally dont know anyone who races 4k.

yes video please,not photo mode

want more ?

Sadly, the standard for the beautiful graphics is 4K, lower and it can look ugly, pixelised and blurry, particulary with ACC or dirt 5 or dirt rally 2.0 ....

So the only way to get it to look good is to run it 4k? I'm not slating the game/sim, I'm genuinely asking for help, I've started it up numerous times and lost all interest due to it looking pants. :(

if you want better graphics, you have to play at ultra, and then you have to play at higher resolution, if you want the graphics like the video, yeah 4K ultra

I think rF2 can look great even at 1080p with ĺots of AA. BUT only with the right content of course, which is mostly limited to tracks that got the PBR upgrade (DLC tracks apart from Reiza, PBR updated "free" tracks, couple of mods). And cars, that... we had this conversation already :) Only issue I tend to find is some weird transparency issues with trees.

About the AI, did anyone try the BTCCs after the update? Do the AI still tend to roll with them?

afaik, the AI rolling, which not just limited to BTCC cars, is still a problem.
iT TENDS to happen more often when you set the AI strength OVER 100%.

The problem i found with the AI is when you do a race where the AI need to do a schuled pit stop some AI dont refuel and cant continue in race, I hope Studio 397 will fix this.

I think it's a myth that you need to run it at 4K to get it good looking. Granted the cockpit rendering could need some update, but that's mostly down to the shaders used. I run it at 1920X1080 at a mix of high and medium settings and it looks decent. And that's with fairly old hardware. All of the tracks released since Sebring look very good and the updated ones like Zandvoort look and feel great too. Cockpits are a bit more over the place but with content released since the beginning of last year you are on the safe side. Basicly anything released since the Ferraris looks great in my eyes.

If you have a decent and more up to date system you shouldn't have issues to get good framerates and good image quality across the board and especialy in the rain or with lower sun angles the sim looks fantastic and magical. And even at night or in overcast situations it looks very consistent and immersive. One thing I would also like to point out is that I prefer a sharp and clear image over loads of post processing. I am most likely in the minority here but I don't like ACC in terms of visuals for example as it requires a high end system to get a smooth gameplay experience with a sharp looking image.

This is how rF2 looks maxed out on my system (GTX 1070 8GB, i7 6700K and 32 GB RAM). Maybe not as good as Forza or GT or ACC maxed out, but it still does a very decent job at this point while offering great fidelity and none of the other sims offers me the option to offer such a wide variety of content, conditions and grids of over 100 cars out of the box. And if you get used to where to look for the right car and track combos with the best quality you can have an amazing experience as in any other sim out there:

Thi update doesn't look "small" in my opinion. It is a sign core featurrs are at last taken care of. The AI has been put aside for too many years, in sims in general and it is really the right time to do something. With the pandemic crisis, sim racing and online racing made a huge step but now it's over (less time to train and be competitive) and the simracing esport credibility is over (why bothers if a large part use cheats?), we can expect some regain of interest for offline racing. S397 updating AI is a good move.

I agree though that any official content, being S397 or ISI created, should be kept on the most modern level of the software. And sold DLCs from third party should get the same attention (by this third party or by S397, the question should be adressed in their agreement). But that won't happen so let's just forget it. And getting a better AI after years of complains is more important imo.

Can´t comprehend! Releasing new stuff, but the Porsche 911GT3R cockpit still looks like made by noob modders! Same with the Audi R8 cockpit!
Still no track map and HUD in the middle of the screen! Why??? Can´t comprehend!
911 and R8 are the 2016 and 2015 models …

All they need do is go to rF2 screenshots thread, all the proof there they need that rF2 can look as good as any sim.

If you can run 4K you should be trying out DL Scaling, awesome.
What will DL scaling do when you run 4k?
if you want better graphics, you have to play at ultra, and then you have to play at higher resolution, if you want the graphics like the video, yeah 4K ultra
TeddyBear, you mentioned PP at medium at least.. what was PP short for?
With RF2 you have to run it at 4k to get it looking good.

I was meaning if you can run decent 4K that DL scaling can give good visual / performance trade off. For mine everything looks better, not so crisp.
Mind you I should have mentioned I drive mainly historic which get better performance then DLC.
