Maserati MC20 Confirmed for Assetto Corsa Competizione GT2 Car Pack

The GT2 Car Pack is set for January, and the car reveals just keep on coming! This time it was the turn of perhaps one of the most highly-anticipated cars, the Maserati MC20.

Assetto Corsa Competizione is adding a brand new car class next month, the GT2 class. Consisting of cars that are more powerful but less aerodynamically reliant than GT3 cars, made specifically for more amateur hobby racers.

There are GT2 versions of pre-existing cars, however there are also quite a few bespoke GT2 models. Having already seen the GT2 versions of the Audi R8 and Porsche 911 as well as the 935, we now have the highly-anticipated Maserati MC20.


Maserati MC20 GT2 in ACC​

The MC20 is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 that produces 621 horsepower. Back when the GT2 cars were confirmed to be coming to Assetto Corsa Competizione in July 2022, the MC20 had not turned a wheel in competition.

It has since made its first appearance in the final round of the 2023 GT2 European Series season. In that event, LP Racing took a debut pole and P2 podium finish for the MC20.


The confirmation of the MC20 makes it four of the eight cars that are potentially included in the GT2 Car Pack:

  • Audi R8 LMS GT2
  • Brabham BT63 GT2
  • KTM X-BOW GT2
  • Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo GT2
  • Maserati MC20 GT2
  • Mercedes-AMG GT2
  • Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport Evo and 935
It is still unknown how much the GT2 Car Pack will cost.

The GT2 Car Pack will be the first DLC available on ACC since April’s 2023 GT World Challenge Pack, which brought in new Evo versions of the Lamborghini Huracán and McLaren 720S GT3 cars, the Porsche 992 GT3 R and Ferrari 296 GT3.

It also included Circuit Ricardo Tormo, although there is little to no indication of a track being added with the GT2 Car Pack. But of course, set for a Spring release, the heavily-requested Nordschleife will finally be added to ACC.


As always, the console ports of ACC will not receive the latest content drops at the same time as PC. Although PlayStation and Xbox players will be able to race in the same lobbies as each other, which is something at least!

I don't get it. So if the GT2 class is angled more at "hobby" racers and is in essence more basic than GT3, why the numerically higher number?! Odd.

Yeah I don't get it either. If past designations are anything to go by, GT2 did used to be faster around a track, I think it was more comparable to the GTE cars.

My guess is just because they have more power, that's it.
 
The naming in GT class is a total mess because these series changed hands and names multiple times. From what I understand once upon a time there was GT1, made of prototype-like cars and official teams, very expensive. The original GT2 (then renamed as GTE) cars were something not too far from today's GT3 (maybe more top speed etc. but same cars), which means less expensive. GT1 class collapsed under its costs and recently GT2/GTE just disappeared in favor of GT3.

The new "SRO GT2" are something that has nothing to do with old GT2. In terms of performance they sit between GT3 and GT4, but I guess they couldn't call them GT3.5 :D
The only area where they are superior to GT3 is horsepower, but they are simpler cars in terms of aero etc.

Despite the messy naming we have today, it kind of makes sense as competition in the GT3 class is making it more "extreme" and demanding, so the gap between GT3 and GT4 has widened and there was the need for "cool" cars that are a bit less extreme.

Personally I am not sure I am that excited for the new GT2 pack as I don't think many people will want to drive a slower "GT" car when they can drive a GT3. Plus, now Kunos will have one more series to BoP, which as we have seen is not that easy to do. I'll buy it to support Kunos and wait for the Nords.

They would require more frequent pit stops for two main reasons....tire wear and fuel consumption.

These GT2's tend to look much cooler than their GT3 counterparts indeed.

Can imagine it was a pain, to decide the name of this class, when GT3 and 4 were already taken.. :)
GT5 as a link to those great Group 5 cars could have worked for me too.
But i'm old probably... hardly anyone remembers those by now.

People only want to drive GT2 if they get forced to it.
GT4's are a great drive in ACC, but it's dead class.
Hosting some cool events with those cars could help.
Before everyone returns to their GT3s, and these things go on the digital scrapyard.

Wow!! a dream come true, i was waiting for the Mc20, i love it!! counting the days for the DLC, instant buy for me, Thank you Kunos!!

After having driven a GT4 in yesterday's 6h LFM multiclass event, I gotta say I am looking forward to the GT2 class even more now. Especially on tracks with longer straights, events such as yesterday's could be real fun when you get to potentially pass GT3s that had just overtaken you a corner or two ago. To me that just sounds like a real plus in racing fun for everybody involved. And even as a standalone series I think this could be good fun for a lot of people who aren't aliens but enjoy a fair bit of good old racing action.
 
Going to be one hell of a decent January in the sim racing space, this and the ams2 drop are going to be the perfect remedy for those cold January nights :)

There is still a lot of question marks regarding whether the car used in the GT2 European Series is any different from the one in Super Trofeo. Anyone more versed in the series can tell me whether there is a difference.
 
I saw 935 so, will be included Zonda and P1 GTR? Cause 935 isn't a GT2 class. And will be included Redbull Ring and Portimao?. I love ACC so i hope Kunos get more SRO licenced cars, like TCR
