Le Mans Ultimate releasing 20 February 2024.jpg
Despite being initially announced for December 2023, Motorsport Games finally gave an exact Le Mans Ultimate release date. The game will hit stores on 20 February 2024.

Yesterday, tickets for the 2024 edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours hit shelves for those holding ACO membership. Those not affiliated with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest will have to wait until next week to get their tickets.

However, rumours suggest that next week may be too late, with record sales. Not to fear if you cannot attend the great race however. Last night, Studio 397 and Motorsport Games finally gave their fans a release date for the much-anticipated Le Mans Ultimate. The game will release on 20 February 2024, despite and initial announcement for December 2023.

The announcement came alongside a trailer, featuring many more cars than previously spotted in screenshots. It seems that most cars and liveries are now ready to play in the game. One can spot the Toyota GR010 alongside the race cars previously seen in the game.

Le Mans Ultimate Delays

The news that the game will release just a few weeks before the first round of the 2024 FIA WEC season, was also confirmed in the Q3 2023 earnings report of Motorsport Games. CEO Stephen Hood states: “We are excited to confirm the updated release date of our planned Le Mans Ultimate title, as we anticipate the game on February 20, 2024.” Hood also confirmed that LMU would feature the RaceControl online system recently introduced to rFactor 2 as well.

The news comes after announcements of major redundancies across the Motorsport Games organisation. The company originally looked to produce games for Indycar and the BTCC alongside the sportscar title. But the British Touring Car Championship’s organiser, TOCA released a statement on Monday announcing the end of said gaming partnership. Furthermore, rumours emerged yesterday of the laying off of the entire Indycar game development team.

Motorsport Games Australia Closed

These rumors proved to be true according to the earnings report. Hood listed “the recent closure of our Australian development studio, with corresponding global head count reductions, and the suspension of the development of our previously planned IndyCar game” as cost-cutting measures. Motorsport Games Australia was also behind the development of KartKraft.

While ‘suspension’ may imply development getting picked back up later on, it realistically seems more like the end of the line for the title. MSG also reported a net loss of $3.5 million in Q3 of 2023.

Despite this, Hood remains positive: “We believe the decisions needed to make this business create engaging, well-made games that fans enjoy, and that are profitable, are well underway. With renewed focus on products, production leadership and budgetary controls, we believe we are already seeing positive momentum for the company.

Financially, however, the outlook appears to be similar to the one presented in the Q2 earnings report.

Based on the available cash on hand and the Company’s average monthly net cash burn from operations of approximately $1.1 million during the nine months ended September 30, 2023, the Company does not believe it has sufficient liquidity to fund its operations over the next year and that additional funding will be required in order to continue operations.

Le Mans Ultimate: Make Or Break For MSG

It seems then that Motorsport Games is now solely focused on putting together Le Mans Ultimate. With that in mind, the somewhat later than expected release date is potentially more promising than one might think.

In fact, Motorsport Games is now seemingly confident it can stay afloat at least until this new release plan. Therefore, there is hopefully less chance of a rushed, unpolished title, giving the development team more time to iron out the flaws.

We are already in the 2024 financial year, have been for quite a while, unless the financial year is different in various parts of the world? I know some places use the calendar year as their financial year. Anyway, I think putting all their eggs in one basket could be a recipe for disaster if they don't get it right with no other revenue options on the table. It sounds like the content is going to be quite limited so not sure how appealing it will be outside the absolute hardcore simmers.
I didn't know the fiscal year in the USA was from october to september. It is indeed different than other countries, there are more countries using the calendar year as fiscal year, which is quiet logical. I assume different fiscal years in other countries are made for taxes collection calendar and States organization.

What is strange here, and is quiet confusing, is that the Q3 report has just been published. If the fiscal year of MSG had ended at the end of september, Q4 should have been already published. I heavily doubt a company publishes the end of June report in November, 4 months later.

Indeed you can read the report is Q3 published November 7th. It seems the company just chose to use another fiscal year (which I assume is allowed in the USA like in other countries). I stick to my remarks. If the fiscal year had ended in September, it would be one of the greatest example of bad management of a company, as the company would have been collecting all the worst decisions to take from its beginning to its end, a case to study in all business schools!

Well, the case is still open, wait and see.

By the way, Motorsport Network, the parent company, has its headquarters in the UK where the fiscal year goes from April 6th to April 5th. Being a network used in different countries. It may be easier to go for.the calendar year when you're dealkng with international partners (so royalties reports and paiments) who mainly use it as a fiscal year, I'm just assuming there.

I'm always amazed how those game studios are completely unable to create and manage a realistic time line for their work.

If I miss all my terms in my job like these guys do I would be fired right now. So unprofessional.

BTW the "video" doesn't show anything.

One quarter delay, for a small gaming studio… I have seen much longer delays for games that are developed by much bigger studios.

In my work I have implemented many new systems and IT projects most of the time are planned too optimistic, especially when they are big projects, just to keep the pressure on.

Have you paid anything? Does the team owe you anything? Don't you prefer being offered a working game and not another broken early access? This deadline change is probably more a political decision than the team not able to meet the deadlines and, even if it was the case, considering the whole mess the company is living, it is quiet normal things go slower than usual ; announcing that many employees are going to be fired before the end of the year with low pay off is quiet violent and generally not motivating for those who remain.

And in terms of communication you can understand that launching a game at the same time you're firing employees isn't really the smartest move to make. Better to let pass by the bad press about the company in December.

There are so many right reasons for this delay and none for you to criticize this team and the people trying to save this company.

There is still no reason to compare B to B IT projects to B to C, aimed to the masses, product developments in the context of a bad situation for the employers.

What you described is unfortunately usual bad and counterproductive team management, giving unrealistic or false deadlines which result in rushed projects or in teams who do'nt care about the deadlines becaus3 they know they are false. This kind of management is generally used by people who don't have any idea of how the job is done. Managers who don't know the job are a real plague un companies and are absolutely counterproductive. How many times I had to deal with this kind of people, never let them rule your deadlines or you are just lost (1nd if you are also a manager and follow their lead, you'll just lose any credibility in front of your team).

Considering the usual awful games launches, the plague is for sure largely spread in the gaming industry.

Yes, I have experienced this a lot unfortunately, where (senior) management put deadlines on our projects that make no sense, because they have no idea what’s involved. You try to push back as much as you can, but sometimes you just get overruled, mostly because of ‘political’ reasons. When this happens, I make sure my team and also our users/customers know about that and I have never lost credibility from both when this happened.

The amount of times this has happened:

Them: 'You have X weeks to do this task'.

Me: 'I need X + 6 weeks'

Them: 'You have X weeks'.

It's as if they think that if they just repeat it enough times it WILL happen.

Lmao

They are just promoting bad work or crunching, both are counterproducrive at the end. And if exceptionnal dedicated and talented people managed to do the work on time, it means the organization fully relies on exceptionnal people who, not on purpose, unfortunately hide the organization flaws. Just wait the day they quit... And in general exceptionnal people quiting inspire the most motivated people (who know more or less what has been hidden for so long) to quit. It takes so little to ruin an organization, just a bad manager.

So far, the game seems to include the cars and classes from the 2023 season, which was the last with GTEs and LMP2 (the latter will return for the Le Mans 24H). Next year we will have GT3 instead of GTE.
If you're making a new game, why would you start with already outdated content? The only explanation I could give myself is that probably many of the GT3s and Hypercars are brand new, so not only they need to work the license deal with the manufacturers, they also need to get their data and 3D models, which might not even be available right now.
My guess is partly your reasoning, but also they can then charge for GT3 DLC separately and make more coin. Had they tried GTE as DLC it likely flops.

Even hoping at the quality of this sim is delusional at this point. It's like taking back a spouse that has cheated on you multiple times, admitting that it probably won't turn out well, but you will wait and see and hope for the best.

The release date isn't set because that's when the Sim will be ready, it's set to that date because it's basically the latest it can come out before the season starts which from my understanding is in the contract.

As far as single player is concerned, rf2 is unplayable on single player and it is delusional to think that this game will be any different.
I wouldn't say "unplayable" but if you were to set up an offline season, try to find 8-10 tracks (S397, mod or paid S397 content doesn't seem to matter) where the ai didn't outright murder you, calibrate ai level for each individual track, make sure there is no rain at all, accept the fact the ai are always going to ignore you on a hotlap when they come out of the pit, hardly have side by side racing but be able to make rewarding passes from time to time and race close to other cars, then it can occasionally be really enjoyable.

It's just a huge pain to do so though. Anyone telling you otherwise is lying. Certain combos work stunning, but it is def not the norm. I have 3500 hours in RF2 and own every single piece of paid content so I am no hater.

MSG: You WILL release Nascar 21 on Oct 28 2021.
Was it ready?
Was it released?

Last I saw anything, AMS2 had announced that they had a licence agreement for Le Mans, with classic version included, so not sure about a conflict with the official game then.
MSG lost all exclusivity more than eighteen months ago. Their lack of transparency was an attempt to bumble along as long as they could so the founders could keep pocketing the money. If the founders gave back their salary and bonuses, there would have been plenty of money to make good games. Just like their previous endeavours (go read about them), the founders never had any intention of creating a long term business. They wanted another way to fund their extravagant lifestyles.
I am not sure there are any developers now. The last year has been nothing but spin from nameless marketing types.

Virtual LM website is showing the teams and drivers from this year (2023). As yet there is no information for the 2024 event. Considering by November 2022 we had the confirmed list for 2023, it is clear the 2024 event is unlikely to happen. If it does, it is almost certain no A-list driver or eSports team will enter.

I have too many good combos to do distance races to choose from.
Last few
Woochoos Historics @ Historic Monza 1000km
LMP / GT @ Virginia and Assen
F3 Community mod does so many 1-2 hour races well I could not list them all
Indycar @ Portland
Craftsman Trucks @ Gateway
TransAm @ Nola
BMW CS @ Sebring wow

All these absolute blasts, yes take sometime, many practice sessions and race tests
mainly because rF2 is so dynamic something will rear it's head combo to combo

I find like other sims AI, so robotic which mostly follow each other like sheep.
Restart first laps I have trouble seeing difference.
Combo to combo you barely need to touch a setting that is how dynamic they are. Not to mention how easy to drive nearer the limit, rF2 is a whole different ball of wax ;) Other sims I call canned racing because they have no mind of their own which makes offline about as interesting as watching paint dry for me.

P.S. Oh oh oh ...you get to start race where you left off. :coffee:
