GTRevival WMD Crowdfunding Delayed Until 2024

GTRevival, Straight4 Studios’ first scheduled project, has delayed its WMD crowdfunding setup until 2024. The studio’s final newsletter of 2023 informed fans that patience was in order.

GTRevival is one of the most highly anticipated sim titles in the community right now. Being worked on by the majority of the team behind GTR and GTR2, GTRevival aims to ‘Revive’ that feeling of immersion and passion so many got from the GTR franchise.

Ian Bell, the CEO of Straight4 Studios, is ever active on X and the development of the GTRevival project has been very public so far. The delay has a reason. Rather intriguingly, the newsletter states that “we can’t talk about it – yet”.


The project’s delayed crowdfunding is not necessarily a sign that there are issues, though. Delaying the opportunity to crowdfund money shows discipline and a level of calmness to the development that is hard to come by in the fast, cut-throat modern game development scene, especially considering titles like EA Sports WRC and Forza Motorsport feeling rushed out of the gate at their respective launch dates.

Plus, the phrasing in the newsletter hints at a positive reason for the delay – time will tell if that is true.

First Gameplay Trailer​

Progress has been shared recently, though. Earlier in December, Bell showed a gameplay trailer featuring a Ferrari 296 GT3. This first bit of footage of the game in action did not tell fans much but showed that there was more than just the screenshots that have been continuously coming from the Straight4 CEO.

Ian Bell hasn't built a good reputation over time. :(:( So far I've only seen chatter, a few screenshots and an anonymous gameplay video, with a Gomez Industries steering wheel not even fully exploited and with the HUD screen turned off LOL What can I expect from this game? Seriously, is there anyone who will give away free money by funding something you know nothing about? Let's be serious. :O_o::O_o:

The Bell haters follow him round like a bunch of angry wasps in a beer garden, feeling deep... what???, Jealousy? Envy? Entitlement, I don't know, but they do seem to be obsessed with the notion that their opinion is somehow important.... it isn't,

The only thing I really hope is that the sim is good enough to be GTR2 updated, I've no doubt that some of the boxes ticked by Bell will be left unfilled, that's life, just look at the spiel that comes from other game studios like Frontier Developments and Bethesda and all the unmet promises there, I think that hurdles will be met and some will be kicked out of the game, but if it stays in line with the vision all will be good (ish) and Modders will hopefully flock to it.

The only reason I see for testing with a GT3 car is to provide a platform encompassing the potential of adding them (or their workings) through a mod or expansion, to be honest, I feel if the sim were to just hit the needs of 4 gears and 4 wheels then adding electronics and GT3 gizmos might have been ruled out by lesser requirements being set in stone.
 
I must be out of touch. Not once while reading the article did I have concerns about clicking the X link or clicking off-site. The article gave me the gist and informed me about things from places and people I don't normally follow. Nothing wrong with that. it's race department not journalism department.
That's a serious reflexion about news media in general. As soon as a website is a source of news for a lot of people (and we are a lot reading RD's news), and even more, as soon as some pay a subscription fee, isn't that about journalism? That's became a real critical issue with lots of non journalists communicating opinions and misinformations as real news. Remember the TV shows and newspaper about cars? They weee made by real journalists (which in my country is an official status with a specific card). The debate is there, but I think not expecting a journalism job, by doing inquiries, further reflexion, critics, before publishing a piece of news, is a tremedous mistake for our own sake. Yes, it is about simracing, not about a political crisis, but it is about how news media treat their readers / viewers / listeners. And if they don't do the job as it should be done, I'm glad there are still people able to critic them and stand against their dangerous degredation. We get used to opinions in news about simracing, we think it is normal, and so we get used the same way to opinions in news about critcal aspects of our lives. And journalists are generally badly paid, struggle to find jobs, and for years now they have been facing the competition of people not as qualified 1s them. 8f one doesn't see the danger for his own sake, that's really a concern, and it is. End of my offtopic remark.

About the news, I would say that it was just stupid in the first place to launch a crowfunding at the time a whole part of the world is spending tons of money for Christmas and the new year, especially considering the general wealrh of the average and humble categories has been decreasing for years. Bad move rightly corrected by posptponing the campaign. It may be a coincidence but I think it's a good move.

What I'm asiing is why a developper backed by an editor needs a crowfunding campaign? Why the editor hasn't been convinced enough by the project to fully finance it? Is there a roadmap somewhere for the potential investors? Roadmap which should give crucial information about milstones, numbers of working days in each department, budget for each department, release date and communication schedule... although not everyone is interested in investing in this project, at least everyone is interested in the release date and the size of the team because thzy would give some taste of the credibility of the project, which is often attacked, because of various facts we all know.

In the past : i make a game, the game is nice, you purchase it.

Today : i make a game, i release a pre release version, you purchase it , if the final game is nice it is good for you. If the final game id sh..., i keep your money.

Tomorrow.
You give me your money without any game.
We will see what we make with your money. The game itself is a secondary important thing

I don´t hate Ian Bell or anybody else.
If Ian Bell just release à modern EXACT copy of gtr2, it will be a huge success, just because (almost)all simracers own a copy of gtr2

Just use the same menus, same physic, same net code.
Everything the same, including moding capacities)

Just do modern graphics as assetto + pure + sol, and you have a huge success.
(Gtr2 already works with VR)

Wow, the comment thread at RD continues to entertain.
Seems like these guys are trying to make a Sim and be transparent about it. Always nice to see the negative Nancy's complain after not spending one penny on it nor even having to ever spend one penny on it. I'll however continue to keep getting newsletters and follow the progress as it develops instead of talking about things I really don't have answers for or know for certain in the first place. Some things never change in here.
What do I know though? I'm about to turn on AMS2 and have some fun so I probably know nothing.
This was a breath of fresh air. Everything I was thinking. I'll continue to look forward to this and check out reviews before purchasing. Until it's released or we've had an opportunity to sample it what is the point in spitting venom and bashing it?

I actually have my fingers crossed for this one, ONLY because of the Group C and 90's GT1 content, which hopefully will be the major focus of the sim. Note to Ian Bell: nobody cares about GT3 content, we already have enough GT3 and you ain't gonna be able to do it better than it's already been done. Group C and GT1 or GTFO.
And to all the haters posting on every GTRevival article... show me on the doll where Ian Bell touched you :rolleyes:
If you don't trust him, don't give him your money, simple. Crowdfunding is always a risk, just like pre-ordering. If you're dumb enough to pay for an unfinished product, you deserve to potentially lose your money, change my mind.
And Group 5 also would be amazing. The world can never have enough Group 5.

I don't understand the rose tinted glasses so many people have with GTR2. The cars ram you from behind, AI cars sometimes wont qualify, no easy custom championships, the physics are slam gas, slam brakes because the cars are too planted, I believe qualifying or practicing at night causes crashes. AI becomes too slow in long races because of bumping damage, horrible mod ui and selection system.

There's really no need for anyone to personally attack Ian Bell (rightfully so or not) when the product everybody claims is his trophy is really not that good. Thats the real story.

Gtr2 is commonly rated ad a great game, not only from me.
I have all the great rss mods, and i simulate all the fia gt with assetto corsa. Great graphics but miss some aspects of gtr2.
I prefer gtr2 for endurance, even with its flaws.

If Ian Bell just makes a complete remake of gtr2 , and just don´t search to do more it will be a huge success.
I am pretty sure about that.

Same applies to great games as gra nd prix legends or rbr.
Simple remake of great game will be succsesfull.

Same would Apple on console for metal gear solid, splinter cell, ico, ....

You forget a crucial point : today you don't purchase a game, you pay a fee to rent the game, you don't own anything. :D

it's so funny everybody try to milk the people with ripped content, stolen data physics from kunos.....
I never heard of VRC using ripped content and I don't recall Kunos ever making physics that incorporates the shader patch physics!

I still remember how Oculus owner betrayed his crowdfunders and sold the company and his soul to Facebook.
I wouldn't go so far as calling John Carmack a traitor.
He didn't invent the tech, but his work was revolutionary and groundbreaking.

Before him, VR was a high-tech gizmo you could only see in military training and maybe some avant-garde arcades.
He brought it all down to the masses, and I'll be forever grateful for that.
I still use the original CV1 and everytime I use it, I get goosebumps.

Although John Romero is probably a more cool dude, John Carmack even being a money milking genius, is still, a genius.

Well, I don't know wether it was you but I've already read the ramming from behind one time there on RD and still don't agree. GTR2 is probably my most played sim ever I have perfect memories of how its AIs behave. If you're underperforming, it is true, the AIs have difficulties to deal with your slow car (no offense there) and you will probably experience what you described. Just adjust the difficulty setting. Which is were GTR2 shines. A 100% difficulty, even on modded tracks, and good mdded cars, resulted in real lap times, and believe me, I checked that for many customed championships from different eras. This is where its immersion level is still out of league.

Speaking about customed championships, it is still the best sim around as you can put almost any rule you need in a simple text file to create a championship with its own points rules. The only things you cannot unfortunately change are the pit stop times (meaning if you play with F1s you still pit as much as the GT cars). Maybe someone has found a solution for that but I've never seen it.

Yes the UI is absolutely outdated, although it is still to my taste the most efficient ever, you can do everything in a few screens, everything is pefectly organized and you can't get lost trying to find a parameter. I understand that for the youngest simracers the UI looks atrocious and won't argue on that. But the fact everything can be done rapidly, that you can modify and create many things, without being a modder, by just editing text files is absolutely amazing although absolutely outdated.

About the UI, I must say that the minimalistic in race UI is absolutely the best ever : the big colour bars with the gear figure are absolutely effective and non intrusive (again for the sake of immersion). Never seen something similar before and after.

Other stand out point at that time : the desaturated colours to give a more realistic look to the game to bring more immersion.

I don't remember AIs not qualifying but why not, that would be realstic. Never experienced the night issues you're not sure about.

There were issues for sure : ending qualifications session before its end caused an absurd grid when running a multiclass race (not sure it was the case for the vanilla content, maybe just for the mods), but it could be easily fixed by editing the cars txt files. The AI losing too much performance because of multiple contacts during a long endurance race was a real issue (you could run the race with no damages, which wasn't the ideal option), I assume the unofficial patch available here fixes that but I may be wrong.

The real issue you haven't mention is the non dynamic weather during a session, a downgrade from GTR1. It was a strange decision but when I used the fix (which doesn't work with current systems ; there is still a tool to generate a dynamic weather file outside the game before a race), there were sometimes bad AI decisions due to a fast change of weather conditions : it was really rare but it happened to me several times when the rain appeared.only 2 or 3 laps. The rain starting was an immediate pit stop for the AIs, whereas I used to take the risk of 2 more laps with my hard or slick tires to gain positions. These same 2 laps after which the rain stopped. And the AIs had to pit again, so I could easily take more positions and even one lap over them. A really rare case but mentionable if we want to point the limits of the game. And it may explain the decision of downgrading the feature. I don't think any AI in the current game coul handle this situation in a better way, but I assume in GTR2 a fix could have been implemented in the weather generator mby forbidding the rain under 7 laps for example. Which has never been done.

The cars are not more planted than the current GT1s representations in various sims and have that enjoyable nice (maybe overdone because I never felt it that much in other games), kick in the butt jnder acceleration.

People are idealising GTR2 not for its pefection, because it is not perfect, but for the level of immersion, the huge amount of GT championships (and even other series) they have been enjoying with this game, and the few screens and low loading times to get into a race. As I stated, putting a 100% AI and experiencing realistic lap times was the real deal for me, it was satisfying just to think I was racing at the same pace than real pilots. And it was showing how well the game was calibrated to match reality. And higher difficilties was made for the fastest simdrivers and aliens, it made sense. It was all about immersion and making sense. Even ACC, the closer game to GTR2, why the ghost cars in the pits ? What the point of that feature except killing the immersion ? I am not nostalgic, my wheel just does not properly work anymore in the gale unfortunately, I would have liked to experience the game in VR now available.

Although we don't share similar opinions about GTR2, I do agree that Ian Bell's historic with games just gives me a lot of concerns about the final product emerging from this new project. On this we absolutely agree.
