Fanatec Releases QR2: New Adapter in Multiple Versions

After first showing a working prototype in late 2022, Fanatec have released their QR2 Quick Release Adapter. The new part aims to offer more rigidity while allowing to keep the convenience of the previous QR system.

One of the biggest strengths of Fanatec’s QR1 system is that it frees the Landshut-based manufacturer’s wheels from having to use a data cable. However, the system also has a drawback. Due to manufacturing tolerances, some QR1 adapters flex when mounted to a wheel base. This flex may be minimal, but it is noticeable – and not exactly ideal for wheels in the higher price regions in particular.

To combat this, Fanatec has developed the QR2. Not only is the new adapter supposed to be more stable, it also lets sim racers mount their wheels by simply pushing them onto their bases. Previously, they had to pull back the outer ring of the release manually – now it simply clicks into place.

Different Versions

Similarly to the QR1, the new adapter comes in different versions. The Pro version looks to be aimed at the Podium range of wheels and wheel bases, while the QR2 and QR2 Lite examples are likely introduced to pair with the CSL DD and DD Pro bases. The non-Pro and Lite models also come in an M version as well as a USB C-type version.

Only the QR2 Lite looks to be made from plastic, both of the other versions look like metal pieces. This should allow sim racers to unlock high torque modes with the latter two, similar to the QR1. The plastic version of the older adapter did fit higher-torque bases, but could not unlock their full power.

At the time of writing this article, an official announcement has yet to be made. However, a QR2 tab is already available on the Fanatec website. There, prices have already been posted as well. Check our list below to find out on how much of a diet your wallet needs to go. Spoiler: It is not exactly a cheap accessory.

Fanatec QR2 Price

  • QR2 Pro Bundle (Type M): €318,09
  • QR2 Bundle (Type M): €227,18
  • QR2 Pro Wheel-Side: €199,95
  • QR2 Bundle (Type-C): €154,45
  • QR2 Base-Side (Type-M): €149,95
  • QR2 Lite Bundle (Type-C): €118,09
  • QR2 Wheel-Side: €99,95
  • QR2 Base-Side (Type-C): €69,95
  • QR2 Lite Wheel-Side: €59,95
For their release, the bundles feature a reduced price. However, this only becomes apparent on the product page itself and is not shown on the overview page at the time of writing.

Sim racers will not have to fork out the maximum amount of cash, though. The difference between the "normal" QR2 and the QR2 pro Wheel-Side models is that the latter is designed to FIA standards and can be used in real racing cars as well. Of course, this ties in with Fanatec's BMW M4 GT3 wheel - but it likely will not be of use for the majority of sim racers.

It's sorta crazy. I've two rims. I've a DD1. So that's
QR2 Pro Wheel-Side: €199,95
QR2 Pro Bundle (Type M): €318,09
Sending costs 50-80?
That's a lot of money to reduce flex?

Is a bit cheaper, but still pricey.

So only flex and faster quick release?
Same for me.

That’s pretty much it. Pro version really isn’t going to be worth it. Probably depends whether you are going to stick with Fanatec and how much of an issue you have with flex. If you’re likely to buy more Fanatec wheels in future then it’s a way of transitioning over to the new QR for everything.

If I thought they were going to turn up with a Clubsport + level GT Wheel with back lit buttons and maybe a screen thats not M3 Wheel level pricing I’d be tempted to stick with them but at the moment I can’t see that happening anytime soon.

I will just wait a couple of more months. I don't think 327 + sendingcosts will be justified. It's just a bunch of metal + cable to reduce some flex and faster quick release. I barely notice any flex on my QR1 rims; Fanatec Black and the Brown Porsche rim. I think if it was a 80-100 euro that was a better price. This amount of money give me Apple-shivers.

For anyone has loose QR shaft easy fix by using the retention bolt comes with it.
Use long handled allen key or extension, those ones they supply are bit light.
I found after-market hex key that fits better.
If you too lazy to use the bolt then any slap you have will just get worse over time.
Then it could possibly start to affect the pins.

Ah fanatec too little too late, I have always used the fixing bolt and a Z ring nod on my CSL, V2.5 and now my DD2, the price to upgrade is scary if you have lots of wheels. For me, I would maybe go for a different base as three of my four favourite wheels are not fanatec and two of my fanatec are incomparable old type QR1,

It only makes sense for people with more then one wheel on a podium DD1/2, we can finally call it QR ...

Fanatec really need to get their S*** together. Looks like the website is broken again upon a new release, what a surprise. Can't order the QR2 kit even if I want to. Guess after many lessons of their Thanksgiving debacle, they still can't find a reliable webhost...

There's a good reason that ~80% of their investors money got burned within a short period of time. It went from 23 euro to now 4,8 euro.

I added a small rubber band onto the shaft of my DD Pro QR1, and it now feels rock solid. Not sure what else I would need for just 8nm.

@22:30 Looks like that new collar with 2 bolts may solve CSL problem.
Expensive fix. lol
Anyone know if new collar will fit old stem and/or if they available as part ?

On 8nm for collar bolts
It was not because he guessed.
It is because he used the wrong end of the allen key to torque it. :coffee:
If he used the long end would have been much closer to 8nm.

I did that as well and I too feel that the looser QR1 feels rock solid, but I will be moving to the QR2 pretty soon. Tired of needing to pull hard just to get the steering wheel off of the wheelbase.

Fanatec wants me to buy a QR they should have provided in the first place. Won't work with my CSW. So glad I went with Simagic and its impeccable QR.
Agree and they charge me a another 200-300 euro plus shipping for it just to upgrade the QR1 to the QR2. Only for a quick release that should have been working properly in the first place. Especially with the price point of the DD2/Podium hub.

Just an odd company. An almost complete detachment from their customers.

This is years too late, too expensive, and just not at all impressive.

Better off putting the money into towards purchasing a wheel and base upgrade, even their budget competitors (Moza) do a better quick release system.
